The Crankshaft sensor is located on the Transmission Bell housing. It detects the rotational speed of the Flywheel, during a "Misfire" the rotational speed of the engine drops a slight bit, this Crankshaft sensor is constantly monitoring the rotational speed of the Flywheel ( this sensor actually detects the Flywheel Teeth as they rotate), after a drop in rotational speed it will know which cylinder misfired because the computer always knows the position of all cylinders via camshaft sensor (the camshaft sensor is NOT A CRANKSHAFT sensor). Thanks Steve for you videos they are AWESOME !!

Hi Steve, actually the Spinning disk has two functions. It determines the Piston Position via the 120 degree slots and the engine speed via the 360 degree slots. This information is used by the CPU to control fuel injection , ignition timing and other functions. This engine has a separate Crankshaft sensor located on the transmission bell housing (driver side) and it determines the engine speed via the fly wheel teeth by using a VRS sensor. This Crankshaft sensor helps in determining engine misfires and identifying the misfiring cylinder.

So my truck has give me the p0340 code a few times, and wont start again once the engine is hot. I thought I'd try my hand at replacing the ignition control/camshaft sensor but I'm having trouble finding a source for an OEM sensor. I can find plenty of aftermarket versions. Any advice on where to get a good one? Thanks!! Great video by the way! Extremely helpful!

It's worth the try with the aftermarket ignition control module only if it's less than $100, try to get the Hitachi unit. To buy an factory OEM part like that, you will be required to buy a complete distributor from Nissan dealer at a $600 cost. In the past, I have used a Autozone distributor and it work fine. Good luck.

Could not find the Hitachi brand. This one looks like a Hitachi OEM device, since it displays the little pin holes on it heat sink aluminum plate just like the Nissan OEM parts. www.amazon.com/Ignition-Replacement-Pathfinder-Frontier-Villager/dp/B089YWF7QB Thanks for checking with the channel, respect and best wishes.

Where can I get a genuine Nissan distributor ?
@freedomrights6882 жыл бұрын
Gday Steve ..Same guy again with the nissan pathfinder vg33e ..Still got same prob ..No Ob2 on this model ..it runs rough after warm up on lpg and petrol with a idle surge up and down a few hundred revs..Maf sensor all good ,new spark plugs ,leads and new distributor ..Im thinking from your vid it might be the crank angle sensor rear of engine ..Would the rear crank angle do this when hot
@SteveXNYC2 жыл бұрын
The crank angle sensor in the rear is for detecting cylinder misfire. The problem might be a vacuum air leak at the intake manifold gasket joints. You need to check for a vacuum air leak. Its a difficult process to diagnose and might just be better to change the gasket or check for a vacuum leak, carefully.

Make sure the MAF is a genuine Nissan dealer parts. Normally, once the engine has over 150,000 mile. It is time for a complete upper gasket overhaul kit to be install, according to most. manufacturers dealer recommendations. Sometime the engine will not need it. It all depends on how well the engine is maintained. The valve rocker cover gasket will also contribute to surge engine idle if it gasket joint should air or oil leak. Make sure the egr valve diaphragm is not leak and us operation properly by applying vacuum suction to its port to see the valve stem move. Check all rubber hoses and make sure its connection is tight at its port connection.

The Crankshaft only function is to detect Engine Misfire, if it fails IT WILL NOT cause an engine performance issue. However the CPU will loose it's ability to detect an engine misfire. There are several components that can cause an Idle Surge problem. From what you're describing, its a good possibility the TPS sensor is malfunctioning. The TPS sensor is built into a unit that actually houses 2 sensors, the TPS and the Closed Throttle position Switch. You need to monitor the the TPS signal output on a Scope ( or you could use a VOM meter), at Idle this signal should be rather steady 0.4 to 0.8 Volts. If its erratic it can contribute to an Idle Surge.
@SteveXNYC2 жыл бұрын
If the crank misfire sensor is defective it will trigger DTC P0340. The TPS close throttle switch control the EVAP purge solenoid and cut fuel after heavy acceleration. A faulty TPS signal will also trigger a code and may surge the engine idle up&down,, so you might be correct there.

Hi I been follow u since I onw a nissan frontier new spark plugs new wires new knock sensor it was working fine until know my question is every time I hit the gas pedal service engine light start blinking and running rough or sometimes when I turn on the car service engine starts blinking after 1 minute stops blinking same when I hit the gaspedal stops blinking I scanned it code is p0300 u think it will be the distributor??
@SteveXNYC2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your support. First, it is best to use Genuine Nissan Dealer spark plugs and its ignition wire. Aftermarket is not recommended. You need to check out this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKi4iX-AoLmUpac . the misfire did not occur before you change the parts I am assuming?. The misfire can be cause my many things but the simple ones are, might be the distributor cap and its rotor, your current spark plug wires are not with in factory Ohm resistance requirement(get OEM ones). Also make sure moisture or water is not developing under the distributor cap. Misfire can also be cause by other source but I don't think it will be the problem unless the misfire was occurring before you replace the part. The Ignition control module inside the distributor, that record crank angle from the reluctor wheel might also be faulty. MAF will also cause a P0300. Keep in touch and let know more information to help you pin point the problem.
