I have personally repaired hundreds of these and similar models over the past two plus decades. You did real good Keith! 😅 Only thing I would mention is, if you do not have decent soldering skills and equipment, don’t try this because you can damage the ECM and if you don’t know what you’re doing you can damage it beyond repair. You’re correct, the eyelet’s must be cared for and the adjacent areas can be damaged by the solder gun/heat.

@Supersonicff-dw6bs

Having done this kind of work for many years (professionally), I suggest sucking the solder out of the holes first. Then heat the bent over legs with the tip of the iron without touching the eyelet/pad with gentle pressure until they are free of the eyelet, then straighten them. The method you showed to straighten greatly increases the chance of lifting a pad and/or the trace. If the pack is sitting high enough of the board you can also clip the leads as close to the pack body as possible, then use a solder suckered and most of the time even the bent leads with such out with the solder leaving which is faster and less application of heat to the pads.

I've never had any success with sucking solder off thru hole pads; there's always some tiny amount of solder left holding the pin! So I always just cut off the component, remove the legs, then suck out the solder.
@Supersonicff-dw6bs
@Supersonicff-dw6bs Жыл бұрын
@kyferez1 After sucking out the solder, put a little liquid flux on the legs and briefly touch the tip of the iron on just the legs and any remaining solder will flow onto the pin. You may also want to try some liquid flux and reflow the pins before sucking. Cutting the pins sometimes can damage the insert or pad, especially on boards with internal layers.

I LOVE that you are doing component level repairs. Get yourself some LOW MELT SOLDER (aka "removal alloy") and you'll never struggle with a multi-pin package removal again, safer for board, and beautiful results overall. The packages will frequently just drop out of the board, then wick or suck holes clear and cleanup with IPA & Kimwipes. The prep'd area will look LIKE NEW.

Have a Johnson Messenger 323A found in a scrap metal dumpster at VT Industries while waiting to unload back in the early 2000's. VT Doors makes fire doors for schools, etc... They're the doors that have to be fire rated by law. That's a requirement in household doors going from Garage to House anymore these days as they've gotta have a 1hr fire rating. You know anything about maxing out a old Johnson Messenger for talk range? I have a Galaxy 66 as well peak and tuned with uppers & lowers and the Cobra 29Ltd which was my radio for years before the Galaxy. I have a few other basic Cobras from over the years and maybe a radio that kicked that I bought used off of someone. There was always deals back in the day.

Are you using Lead Free or 60/40-Tin-Lead? I use both, depending on the age of the PCB. Sometimes I use Tin-Silver, too. Also, I use an electric solder sucker. This does a wonderful and quick removable job. Tracks are always left undamaged.

@fredmalito9869
@fredmalito9869 Жыл бұрын
Adding low melt solder to each pin would have helped immensely in the removal of that component. You would have them been able to wick off the solder much easier and more rapidly while applying less heat to the board. In fact, you could have wicked off just the outer four, bent the pins straight, and then applied hot air to the remaining pins for just a few moments and watch the component fall right out. The remaining cleanup would have been much easier. Northridge Fix is also a good source for Amtech flux, high-quality braid, and low melt solder.

Use a small piece of silicon hose on the end of your solder sucker. This will allow a better seal on the soldered pin in which will make it easier and faster to de-solder. Keith you forgot the links for the supplies you referenced earlier in the video so now I have to go back and find that stuff. Just got stimulus check. Gonna talk with wife and see if she'll let me come to class now. It'll be a worthwhile investment IMHO even with me just getting into it. I'd be able to use my IM-608 for more than keys, diag for once. Lol... OF course after doing a class like that I'd be at salvage yard buying up modules, etc. Do you recommend using a dual OBDII adapter so one can hook 2 scan tools or multiple items to a ecm, OBDII port on a vehicle for use of multiple tools for diagnosing one thing but from different perspectives.

Hi Kieth great job. I was wondering why you use so much flux on top at first before heating up the solder, what that accomplishes? And not doing this as much myself I was amazed that using so much of the flux on there doesn’t interfere with soldering back together as it looks like it might. Thank you keep up the good work! Doug
@adamrichardson2227
@adamrichardson2227 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think that using that much causes a problem necessarily other than making a mess. I think he uses way too much when looking at other videos for how they do it. I am not an expert though, but when I solder I just use the cheap wax type stuff that gets me by fine. The tube stuff like this is what most pros use but not usually that much. Maybe a smaller nozzle might help get it on there a bit thinner.
@L1Training
@L1Training 3 жыл бұрын
Its just messy, you cant have too much flux, it doesn't interfere with the soldering at all. You want a high concentration of flux in the solder. BUT, yes too much flux does make for a mess to clean up, that's why I clean them before I put it all back together.
@rasputinputin8103
@rasputinputin8103 3 жыл бұрын
Listen to Keith, he is right. Also, you must clean the PCB with ACETONE afterwards. Some fluxes can eat away the tracks on the PCB over time. I build microwave transceivers that need a delicate feel and NEVER use LED-FREE, only Tin-Silver on these, because microwaves are attenuated by some solders, plus, lead free causes cracking and microcrystals to form, causing a failure of the circuit. 60 years an RF electronics engineer.

Nice to see someone taking money off the big dealers. I had a Mitsubishi Colt years ago and was told I needed a new ECU to fix a misfire. Mitsubishi original $950, used from a junker, $400. Gave it to a tech who worked for me, changed an output transistor for a grand total repair bill of around 90 cents. As an engineer who did my training in the days before every module became a throwaway item, here are 2 things we were taught. 1 When soldering pins on chip never go from pin to adjacent pin. For example on the 1560H we would probably do pins 1, 5, 3, 7 2, 6, 4 then 8. The logic being to prevent application of too much heat in one place, reducing the risk of lifting tracks. 2 Another thing we were taught was to always clip legs on chips before you solder them. We were taught that clipping them after soldering can apply pressure to the newly soldered joints , making them unreliable. I'm sure everyone has their own view on this. That said, I've watched a few of your videos now and enjoy what you do. If your work is good enough for Eric O, then who am I to criticise!
