A lot of people are coming full circle back to the TD42 because sensibly modified and maintained they're actually a really solid engine. Mated with the GU driveline you have what is arguably the best all round 4wd ever made. Plenty of people are now buying crate engine td42ti's these days because for 15-20k that engine (sensibly modified and maintained) will do 600 thou km plus before you'd consider a rebuild. Doing 50 thou km at a year that's 12 fucken years of hassle free 4wd'ing. Married up to a GU/GQ you get the whole 4wd package. No stupid electronic switches for 4wd modes, no bullshit sensors chiming away at you, no stupid emission devices limiting the efficiency of your diesel requring dpf burns or some other manifold clean every couple thousands kms, one of the easiest engine bays to work on unlike some retarded diesels that have starter motors inside the engine itself and the list goes on.
@mgiblonski4318 Жыл бұрын
Couldn't have said it better myself. TD's are a super solid engine if power levels are kept sensible, and they will definitely go 500,000km + with regular maintenance.....i know because i own one that's well on its way to 700k and have mates who have TD's that are approaching 1 million kms. I've been telling people for years that the new generation of small capacity common rail diesels are going to give their owners serious grief in the long term. As far as I'm concerned, EGR and DPF technology is really just a knee-jerk (and poorly thought out) reaction to emissions regulations.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but at around the 30:00 minute mark you mentioned the rectangular cut-outs in the fan shround, and I believe there should be stiff flaps there that seal the shroud at low speed for proper fan vacuum through the radiator, but bend open at high speeds to allow more airflow through the radiator core. My 2005 Nissan Armada (US version, like the Titan truck) had a similar set of flaps on one side.

the holes in the radiator shroud are for rubber flappers. when closed, it forces the air to be pulled through the radiator by the fan. When you're blasting along down the highway, they allow air to flow straight through - thus giving you good cooling at speed (since if the air had to make a 90 degree twice through the fan shroud, it would work worse.
@theskidfactory Жыл бұрын
That part of the radiator is actually excluded from the fan segment altogether. I don't remember them being like that but could be a supercession.
@stoneshrink Жыл бұрын
@@theskidfactory that Camaro you had hidden in a prior episode has a similar design. Basically it's like mud flaps that hang down and as the vehicle drives down the street, they open to allow air through... but we don't have diesel Patrols (aka Pathfinders) here in the States - so I don't know whether that shroud is up against the radiator or if there is space ... the Bolivian one I worked on was missing all of that...

The pitting in the coolant pump housing - comes from either/and/or using the wrong antifreeze or not changing antifreeze to manufacturer spec. Old antifreeze transfers stray current and aluminum is the best conductor to ground.... at the slight issue of becoming a sacrificial anode. (9:27)... as a second problem, overheating usually occurs on motors that haven't had their fluid changed because the antifreeze becomes a sludge in the lower-flow passages of an engine.

The best engine for patrol is bmw 3.0 diesel the famous m57 engine! Super reliable and probably the strongest 3L diesel there is. It has massive tuning potential without touching the internals, probably over 1000nm without touching internals! That engine is no joke. Basically the 2jz of the diesels! 300hp with just a tune. No overheating problems like mercedes om606, no hidden problems just pure power! Check top offroad romania and see what that engine is capable of!💪💪💪
@anonimous336 Жыл бұрын
Turbo yoda has never been driven in a m57 patrol 😂😂. I tell you man that thing is monster! Put hybrid turbo and injectors and pump from bmw 535d and you got 420hp 900nm 😂😂 just like that. At those figures the patrol drivetrain starts to break, the axles… No stock internals engine can brake patrol drivetrain except the bmw m57. no overheating no braking cranks no melting pistons non of dat 💩. the rods on that engine are massive. If you get the biturbo m57 from the bmw 535d then you just need a hybrid turbo and you can achieve a 450-500hp and over 1000nm.

thanks for being honest about the ZDs, Al - the late model CRD always gets tarred with the same brush - but its a very different animal. Completely agree about the displacement issues though, the lack of torque is the biggest issue with these cars. love mine still, but a TD would be nice....
@JT-4real Жыл бұрын
The ZD30 really are the black sheep due to the heads cracking at the glow plugs, turbo failure and the fuel pumps. Thought Nissan would have learnt by the time they developed the YD25, but this engine was a worse design. They get tarnished for good reason. FYI if you do replace the head on a ZD, make sure its the Spanish built head and not the Chinesium built head, you will thank me later!

Those two large "holes" in the fan shroud(passenger side) IIRC are for two large but thin rubber flaps that are 'top hung" but are free to "flap".. The theory being that if the vehicle is moving slowly with little outside air being forced through the radiator from the front of the vehicle by it's forward speed... the flaps would fall down and the fan would then "suck" these flaps and seal them against the shroud... allowing the fan to maximise draw over the entire area of the radiator. The faster the vehicle moves forward the more air forced through the radiator and at a certain speed the force lifts the rubber flaps off the "seal" of the shroud allowing "full flow" through the radiator.... the thermo fan hub also "shutting off" so relieving the horsepower drain on the engine.... Of course you could put another fans in each of those gaps instead of the rubber flaps....

Looks really sick and reliable. I gotta say though its pretty shitty for the ZD 30's heater pipes to bleed it, My Patrol with the TB45E heater pipes are way above the engine with a little pipe comin out the side of it with a small rubber cap. Think he's refering too the low down performance. Like how driving a 90hp Cummins is way different too driving a 90hp vw due too the different torque and power delivery. But in that respect m57s torque curve is alot steeper than the td42s off idle. Common rail DI is almost always gonna have a edge on low down torque Vs td42's idi.. obviously td42 extra displacement will make up alot lost on the idi
