Here we go again...this time it's a 2010 Nissan Rogue with a flashing airbag light! Turns out that fixing it will cost an arm and a leg. Will Nissan USA step up to the plate?
Enjoy!

Wow, for a moment I thought about looking for a functional used seat assembly at a junk yard, but this solution was heaven sent. from $2500 to $96. Most companies nowadays pay more attention in training their CS reps to sound friendly and supportive when in reality their hands are tied by company policy and the whole call comes down to a waste of time. I really admire your patience, knowledge, problem solving approach and cool head on this issue... A true testament on having reached 10K subscribers and keep growing.

chungaleta1234, I certainly agree with your assessment. Appeared quite evident to me, that person was highly trained in basically what amounts to psychology. What happened to me one time is I bought a low mileage truck from a dealer. Was young at the time and decided to buy the extended bumper to bumper warranty, or so I thought. The clutch slave cylinder went out. The dealership told me it wasn't covered, and I said what do mean I bought the bumper to bumper extended warranty and I had specifically asked the purchase agent when I bought it, if that meant just like factory warranty, and was told yes, so had the 1200 bucks for that added on. So when they told it wasn't covered, I thought about a plan. Right there at the dealership, I was so loud that I knew they would want me to quieten down. Sure enough , the used car manager decided to cover it. I knew exactly what I was doing, whether it worked or not. A little reverse psychology back at em !

I had the same flashing airbag light for my Infiniti G37. I contacted Infiniti and of course they wanted me to replace the seat at the tune of $5000 as the only fix! I ran across this video, ordered the part from Ireland, got it installed and voila! the light is no longer flashing! What a lifesaver; it's good that my passenger airbag will always be on as I don't have small children to carry around in my convertible. Thank you soooooo much for the information.

Thank you SOOOO much for this video. I received the part from Ireland, plugged it in, and reset the DTC's. Perfect! Well, almost. The only issues people need to know are:1) the car will always think someone is in the passenger seat, so the seatbelt warning stays lit, unless you reach over and click the passemger belt.2) You should never allow a child to sit in the front seat now, below the weight limit, because the passenger airbag is ALWAYS armed.Saved me a TON of money though!!!

Can I ask when you pluses it it did you unplug anything under the seat first and did you disconnect the battery first? I’m single mom going to try to do this myself.
@jeffreyoberholtzer4371
@jeffreyoberholtzer4371 Жыл бұрын
@@brookelauren6877 Sorry Brooke, it has been 5 years since I did it, and I don't remember everything, but I don't think I had to disconnect the battery. Just follow the directions in the video to disconnect the seat module under the seat, with the car turned OFF, and plug in the device from Ireland instead. However, you will also need to reset the DTC codes. You probably can take it to any local garage or parts store and have them reset it for free, but there is also a weird reset you can do yourself by turning on and off the ignition/START switch 3 times in the right sequence. You would have to Google that separately. Also, since you say you are a single mom, beware of what I stated above about the fact that the passenger airbag will ALWAYS be active now, so NEVER seat a young child in that front seat.

Depending on the scan tool you are using, (modular scan tool) there is a option usually listed as "special function". Here you can perform a occupant classification calibration and seat weight sensor calibration. I couldn't tell you if this vehicle allows for this option but definitely something to look into. Also Nissan SRS dtc's have to be cleared not only from the main memory code but also from history, this is also sometimes in the special function option as well. SRS DTCs can also be cleared doing a procedure that has you cycle the key to the on position and as soon as the SRS light blinks or turns off, you turn the key to the off position. Do this 3 times and on the 4th attempt to the key to the run position.

I think this is a really common problem across a vast range of cars Ivan. My 2001 BMW had a failed passenger seat sensor and would have cost a lot to replace the whole seat. Lower technology back then and I found some clever bloke who tricked the unit to thinking the seat permanently occupied with a diode and a resistor. Cost under £10. Like you I was very relieved! Love all your videos by the way. Keep it up!

A safety recall is not constrained by time or mileage. There was a recall on the airbag system on my 2004 F150. I finally had it performed about 3 years ago, at no cost to me. That Lady on the phone opened up Nissan to a horrendous Lawsuit by not simply fixing this admitted safety recall.

I've been doing research on my 2009 Altima S 2.5 with this problem. I managed to find a seat cushion at a local pick and pull yard that matched my interior (and was luckily in good shape, as most weren't). I took a gamble and swapped the cushion (with the sensor inside) and it cleared the light (I was able to test it on my car before installing by unplugging the original seat sensor and plugging the new sensor to the cars harness). I also took a cushion apart to see inside- the cloth cover and sensor are attached to two long wires that run along the top of the foam from front to back. Hog rings are used to secure the seat cover and sensor to those rods, which seem to be glued to the foam. I was able to use some heavy duty snips to cut the little hog rings and remove the cover and sensor. I may try replacing the sensor in the original cushion and have a spare, securing with zip ties (or velcro strips? hmmm). If you have a seat warmer the pad is in there too but mine had a foam pad that was a "dummy" warmer instead.

I have a 2011 Nissan Rogue and am going through the same saga...my mechanic was trying to find a replacement seat from a junkyard but no joy! I'm going to order the Airbag360 seat weight sensor simulator; since with my mileage it would make no sense (moneywise) to spend $2000 on the vehicle. All other factors have been fine and the vehicle runs great, but for safety sake I need to have the airbag deploy if needed!

Ivan- I hope you are aware- that SRS is now on 100% FULL POWER. The job of the weight sensor- is to distinguish between Adult and Child. Many Children were being seriously injured and a few were decapitated by one power air bags; the solution is a weight sensor, to make the inflation 1/2 as forceful when occupied by a certain weight. If the switch isn't exercised for a period- it CAN BE stuck. I have seen one freed up by forcefully bouncing in the seat a few times.

Ivan you just found out what makes people go crazy when they go to the Stealership with a problem and you pay to get the diagnosis of what is wrong but yet they still want to gouge you to further to tell you what the problem is when you know what is going on. It drives people mad when they have to go back so many times and spend more money only to still see the issue not fixed. I think some of the Dealerships get a bad rep for this kind of thing

You made me laugh when you suggested a dealership using common sense diagnosis. 5 hrs is insane especially seeing as 1.4 is for diagnosis & repair but most of their customers pay for it and don't even question it. I had audio amplifier & rear HVAC feedback history DTCs on my wife's 2014 Traverse...all from the same control unit head (coincidence hardly) while under warranty. They reprogrammed the module and after programming never cleared the reprogramming codes or the originals. After I cleared the codes I operated the rear control for HVAC & speaker cancel and boom codes back. I took my Verus Edge with the recorded DTCs & time stamp to the dealership and the service writer tried to feed me crap about what was happening & then I told her I either needed to talk to the lead mechanic or manager b/c what she was saying wasn't even close how the system operated. As soon as I showed the lead the Verus he seen the codes weren't cleared after reprogramming and they put on the bill that wiring was checked and I showed the lead the screws filled with dirt & dust that have never seen a bit. He recorded the codes, cleared them and I showed him how fast they reasserted. He agreed with everything in front of her and they were history DTCs not affecting fit, form or function & I just wanted on record with a statement that if not repaired then once the warranty ran out and it need the rear HVAC/Entertainment module that they would diagnose/repair/replace at no charge and the GM Technical provided me a ref # and guarantee in writing. This video will help your viewers & I was impressed how calm you were. Keith comes thru again & I'll have to remember that company. Thanks for the information!! Congratulations on surpassing 10K subscribers.

Excellent video on how to understand communication between modules. That is the gem of this video. Whether or not someone is hurt in a crash is irrelevant. The air bag may malfunction. The infinite number of variables in a crash situation is obvious. All we can do is try to reduce the odds by first of all, driving carefully, wearing a seatbelt and try to put tiny kids in the back seat. Great fix with definite acceptable risk factor. Not to labor the point, but what if airbag went off as designed and it's one of those Tanaka shrapnel bombs? Whoops

You Are The Man!!! Great Video! Great Solution! However...its not just Nissan customer getting screwed over failing seat sensors, BMW, Ford, Honda just to name a few hit you with the same resolution > Dealer to customer: "We need to swap out the entire passenger seat... that will be $2500 please" That said... here are a few important facts to understand in regards to installing the Airbag360 passenger sensor emulator. Once installed... the passenger airbag will always deploy in case of an accident. Even if its only a small child or an infant is the passenger seat. Even when the seat is empty! Do not allow children to sit in the front passenger seat. Front passenger airbags will deploy if you get in an accident and can injure the child. It may or may not be illegal to modify the system in your country... if worried... check the laws. If you sell your car you should either disconnect the emulator or disclose to the buyer if you have installed a passenger seat mat bypass. Once installed, your vehicles airbag module will "see" the bypass in the system as follows: Passenger Seat Status: Occupied Passenger Seatbelt Status: Fastened Seat Occupancy Sensor: Installed and Working NOTE: As Ivan indicated, once you successfully installed the airbag360 emulator you may notice the seat belt reminder chime. This is a sign that the installation of the bypass went well. Due to the sensor the car is detecting the presence of an adult in the passenger seat. To disable the seat belt warning, you have two options 1) Buckle the passenger seat belt. 2) Install a seat belt warning bypass emulator. Last ... be aware even after you install an airbag360 emulator the airbag light may still stay on. In this case you will need to use an automotive diagnostic scanner to read and clear the codes via the vehicles OBD2 port. Last warning: Be aware if you order this device during the coronavirus epidemic it will take almost FOREVER to get to you due to restrictions on international shipment. Mine took 6 weeks from order to delivery. Although not the sellers problem, he (airbag360) was not very supportive nor understanding. Basically: "Hey, we shipped it... if the US post office system loses it... that's your problem."

Typical dealership highway robbery with a smile routine. I get pissed at dealerships that either have unqualified personnel, or thieves that wish to take everything you got. I walked out of the dealerships due to their being corrupt. Mel Clayton Ford had a location in Santa Barbara, but Ford caught them cooking the books. Ford closed them down some time after I left. $500 bucks to do a 1.4 hr job sounds like highway robbery to me. Knowing all the mechanics I have known, it sounds just like our Mr Brooks, who logged an average of 30 hrs every day. Nissan knows how to fix their product, but selling parts is very profitable. Nice to see you figure out a sensible fix, nice to see you video Nissan's highway robbery routine.

That sensor is a wear item all vehicles that have them eventually need them replaced as people spill stuff in the seat which can damage them and all the people that sit in it. I would personally try to get a used one as 2000 is way to much. Good luck Ivan. It was definitely worth a shot to get it covered seems like they would find a more cost effective way to do it so when they need repaired.

Nissan/Infiniti have been having problem with the seat sensor on all their vehicles. I scan the SRS in my Infiniti G35 and it came back with the sensor for the passenger seat. There was a TSB on the issue and I looked at the bottom of the seat and could see that the "TSB Fix" has been done on the seat. There was also a lot of postings on the internet that the TSB Fix was only a temp fix and that if you undo the TSB fix and just clean the contacts between the seat and the main wiring harness that will correct the problem. I cleaned the contacts and used a dielectric grease and when I plug the seat back in and the SRS light didn't come back. My guess is that the wet floor eventually cause the contacts to become corroded and the signal is lost between the seat and the SRS module. Remove the seat verify that all contacts are making contact (you can back probe the connection to verify that the connection is good. The 350z and g35 racers install different seats in their cars so in order to not have a SRS light on they install a set of resistors to trick the SRS module to think that the occupancy sensor is still attached to the seat and working.

You took it too the wrong Nissan dealership. Keep driving to Mark Arbuckle Nissan, we'll treat you right. Mostly because I'm a technician there. A shop should be VERY careful installing a device like that. You could be held liable if something doesn't go right. You as the consumer and installing it yourself, no issues.
@johnaclark1
@johnaclark1 7 жыл бұрын
I can see a law suit (against both Nissan and the owner/repair-person) here regardless, if one is not careful. If a child were to sit in that seat and the airbag deployed and injured or killed the child whoever put that in could be liable,and probably Nissan too. If it's your vehicle and your fix you know the risk. However, if that vehicle is sold to another party and the accident occurs (even though ALL parents should know better than to ever put a child in the front seat) then I think the liability could come back to the owner that installed the device, especially one with the obvious knowledge that Ivan has. In my opinion, if the vehicle is ever sold, the modification should be disclosed or the proper repair made.

I don't think so if they don't pay attention to his request about a safety issue, he found a cheap solution to fix it and he even has a prove if something goes wrong, there is no sense to pay $2000 for a sensor that is safety concern, that stuff should be lifetime warranty if there is no accident records

Impressive diagnosis! Sucks that nissan left you hanging. As a former bmw tech, whining to the service dept manager has the best probability of getting some kind of assistance. On a side note when checking the occupancy sensors, its a good idea to check the signals with the seat empty, then with an adult sitting in it to see if the signal changes as that is the purpose of that sensor to tell the difference to the airbag module. Glad you were able to get it working though and didnt have to give up your first born for an ignorant oem defect. Nissan just went down in rank in my book.

Excellent job, Ivan on the air bag problem and 10k subs. I likely would have been looking for a used seat. I might have told the dealer to only test the seat sensor with their fancy tool. I doubt they even have one. I recently replaced a throttle body on an Altima and for some reason i could not reprogram it with my scan tool or manual reset. Took it to the dealer to have it programmed with the dealer scan tool and the tech told me that they don't use it and that it was in the back collecting dust. He used his Snappy scanner. Fifteen minutes and $80.00 later.

@wysetech2000 i have had some trouble re-learning throttle bodies on several different Nissan models with my Snap-On Modis. Each one has been slightly different in regards to the procedure, but with patience and persistence I was able to successfully complete them all. If they idle high, you can disconnect one injector at a time while doing the re-learn with a scan tool. If the idle is erratic, it's all in the timing of when you press buttons on the scan tool. The re-learn is done by the car, the scan tool only requests it. So if the request is not done properly, or if a parameter is out of range, the re-learn won't work. Hope this helps for the next one!

+josue ruiz Thanks for the tips. I have done 2 or 3 of them without a problem and I tried disconnecting 2 injectors several times on this one. The dealer tech told me that sometimes they are a PIA to program.

This is all due to government regulations. I have one for you. I got an email from Carfax saying that my 2016 GT 350 has "diminished value" because it has an open recall and has not had an oil change. The recall is for the oil cooler lines. I was waiting for parts from Ford while the value diminished. The recall parts have been installed and the oil has been changed. I wonder if Carfax will see that and increase the value.

I spent the last couple nights addressing this B1018 code on my 370z. I hooked up a logic analyzer to see what was up. It looks like the Airbag Computer sends out a 0x8A over the signal wire to the sensor and the sensor sends back a byte of its status three times with a timing of 10 milliseconds. The Unoccupied code the sensor returns is 0x69 so the logic analyzer looks like 0x8A ~ 0x69 ~ 0x69 ~ 0x69. The communication is similar to K Line, 10400 baud over a single wire that toggles 12v to 0v normally high. I built a quick emulator with an Arduino variant (CANBus Triple) and it worked fine when I send the same 0x69 return that I sniffed with the logic analyzer. Ends up I just had a bad connection under the seat and back probing the connector (after a couple nights of messing around) fixed it. So the bad connector gave me a B1018, could be the case for you also.

Hi Ivan, thanks for the great video. I bought and installed that airbag 360 seat set sensor simulator, it does detect that seat is not occupied, but airbag light is still on. I don't have that box-computer you are using for fixing signals. Is that necessary box? I watched videos about turning car key 3 times and it stops flashing airbag sign, it does, but after 1 day its back flashing. Would you give some advice? Thanks in advance!

Imagine that? Stupid magic box from Nissan, calibrated to self-destruct after 6 years, would cost someone who didn't know any better over TWO THOUSAND friggin dollars!!! Downright criminal if you ask me. How automakers get away with this crap I'll never understand. If all of us stuck together and gave them a collective FU by not buying anything new, maybe that would get their attention? I know I'm done with anything new, that's for sure. '07 was my first and last one. I'll keep fixing my junk until there's no frame or body left. Automakers seem more concerned with engineering themselves a cash cow, rather than engineering US a DECENT product. Typical dealership right there. GM is exactly the same. I had an intermittent body code for the 4x4 switch, right from day one. Dealer claimed they couldn't find a problem. I ended up having to fix it myself YEARS later - only needed a new switch! How hard was that? WTF ... In another adventure, I went to their parts department, after mishap involving a sapling and my rear bumper (which a also crushed the box so bad it had to go on a frame machine to be straightened - way to build 'em, GM!) of my '07 Silverado, and they wanted to charge me $9 EACH for friggin RIVETS! I laughed out loud and walked out. Unbelievable. I ended up using bolts, then ground the heads down so the plastic trim would sit flat. Wasn't enough that I paid $30 LARGE for the damn truck - they have to continually nickel and dime me. GM can kiss my ass! Nice fix there. My neighbor has the same vehicle, only newer, so I'm storing this one in the back of my brain. Thanks once again Ivan! :)

Hear hear! For 3 seasons, my wife commutes just under 70 miles a day to work and back in a '86 Mercury Grand Marquis. We've owned that car 14 years now - it's given me VERY LITTLE grief over the years. 238k miles, still on the OEM fuel pump, and p/s pump, & just changed the OEM starter this spring. In the winter she drives a '93 Volvo 940. We got it last year with 131k miles on it. Previous owner set the fuel pump wiring harness on fire (LOL) so I got it cheap. During the summer, I find myself taking that car a majority of the time, since it's better on fuel than the Silverado. It's gutless as far as power goes, but it's still a joy to drive - comfortable, handles pretty good, and also, gives me no grief. My next car is going to be a '69 Grand Marquis convertible, if I can ever get the funds together. :)
