Hey Mike. You have the right way to teach even a newbie like me. You explained everything, and I appreciated the detailed instructions in your video. There are quite a few people with videos like yours who are learning as well. Thumbs up dude.

Hi. Tried this in my 2006 Sentra. I left both caps open and started my engine. At first l, coolant kept pouring out the top. After about 2 qts of spillage bubbles happens and coolant levels began to drop. Not sure what I may have done wrong. *I filled it to the metal line as you mentioned * Thanks!

When you talk about a drain plug in the back of the engine is that for the engine coolant also or to drain the engine motor oil?
@mikesdoityourselfАй бұрын
The drain plug on the back side of the engine is for draining of engine coolant. It's not necessary that you open that one also, but it will empty the engine block of coolant(coolant stuck behind the closed thermostat). You could drain the radiator, refill, run the engine, and then let it cool. Then repeat the process. This should change out most of the fluid. Good luck with your project!- Mike

@@mikesdoityourself Hi Mike thanks for the response. I am a little hesitant on jacking up my 2002 nissan sentra and climbing under it. I may just pay a shop to put it on the lift and change out the coolant.
@2paulm2 жыл бұрын
Draining and filling the radiator you don't have to worry about the thermostat as that was closed when you did the drain and fill.
@bluecavemen2 жыл бұрын
4:34 is it possible without going under car. Would it be good idea just to plug back the hole. Run it for a while then unplug to drain. Repeat a few times until I get clear water?
@mikesdoityourself2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't want to unplug anything when the engine is warm/hot- the pressure and heat build-up could burn or blow when the pressure is released. Good luck on your project!- Mike
@bluecavemen2 жыл бұрын
@@mikesdoityourself I think you misunderstood me. I would run it for 10mins then wait for the engine to cool down. Then release the valve at the bottom to drain the water with the anti freeze.
@mikesdoityourself2 жыл бұрын
@@bluecavemen sure, that would work- there are many ways to do this- then, when refilling the cooling system, remember to add more undiluted coolant because the thermostat will be closed at first and you'll have some water left in the coolant areas of the engine (whatever doesn't drain out after the engine cools). - Mike

@@mikesdoityourself why is that some use their water holes and other use distilled water? does that really matter? i would figure if you leave the top open the water will evaporate out
@mikesdoityourself2 жыл бұрын
@@bluecavemen there is varying opinions on that - I would use distilled to keep any contaminates from getting into the system or I like to use the pre-mixed coolant. - Mike

Hi, and thanks in advance for your time. Did you use a thread sealant with the engine block drain bolt? if you dint, any coolant leakage there?
@mikesdoityourself4 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly, when I removed the plug, I didn't notice any thread locker or Teflon tape on the threads so I just made sure the plug was tight when reinstalling. Both are OK to use if used in moderation. I checked for leaks a day later and didn't notice any. Good luck! - Mike

FSM calls for Permatex 56521 High Performance Thread Sealant, bought it from Amazon, auto parts didn't have it.

Would the process be similar for a 2014 Sentra SV? I can't seem to find the plug on the bottom of the engine. All the bolts just look like normal bolts!!!
@mikesdoityourself6 ай бұрын
@@MightyMemeKing yes, the process should be the same. The plastic drain cock should be at the bottom of the radiator facing towards the engine. Good luck with your project!- Mike

You can open thermostat valve . Then add water . The water goes to slender then tighten the valve thermostat this it safty better than turn on heater

Is there a high chance of getting air in system
@mikesdoityourself6 ай бұрын
If you keep adding coolant to the filler hole, with the engine running, this will move bubbles through the coolant system while the engine warms up. Make sure the thermostat has opened before locking the radiator cap back on. Good luck with your project!- Mike

What is the tightening specs on the drain plug?
@mikesdoityourself Жыл бұрын
The specs that I found say 1 nm or 1 ft pound. With plastic threads, you have to be careful not to over tighten the drain plug. I would tighten the drain plug until it doesn't leak, and it feels somewhat tight. Good luck with your project!- Mike

How much would a mechanic charge? This video has me thinking I can do it, but I am nervous. Is it common to encounter rust?
@mikesdoityourself2 жыл бұрын
Could be $100 to $200, not really sure to be honest; the fluid would be $20 to $30 for a couple gallon jugs. Rust is common when the coolant has been in the system for many years- most of it should clean out - I would just check the condition of the radiator itself, hoses, and the water pump. Good luck with your project!- Mke

Hi Mike, I have a 2012 sentra, 60K miles. Coolant never been changed. Can you unscrew the engine plug from the top ? or impossible to reach ?
@mikesdoityourself4 жыл бұрын
Maybe you could feel for it from the top and get a socket or wrench on it also. To get a hand or arm around the back of the engine would be difficult. I just found it easier to get at it from underneath. Good luck!- Mike

How does it compare to a 06 Sentra ? Same capacity ?
@mikesdoityourself2 жыл бұрын
One website I read says the capacity is 1.33 gallons; another website shows 7 quarts total capacity in the cooling system. So my guess would be somewhere between the two; I would buy extra in case you need it; the process should be the same or similar. Good luck with your project!- Mike
