Thanks for posting this. So I had this procedure done 18 years ago in my early 20s (I’m 40 now) and In Jan of this year all of a sudden the it felt like flood gates of acid had just opened, I’ve been on a inhibitor (nexium) for about 3 years now, met with a gastric doc, immediately got referred to a surgeon, and I’ll undergo an endoscopy next Tuesday and bravo, now let me tell you, 18 years ago there was no bravo, it was instead done with a tube down your nose into your esophagus, I never made it 48 hrs because it was awful. So, the surgeon is pretty confident that the Nissan has “slipped”, probably due to the years and having two babies, but I guess the revision for me is going to be super complicated because all the scar tissue, I had many issues with the original surgery, now a reminder it was 18 years ago and it was very new back then but I had to go through like 3 dilations (to stretch it) months after the surgery because the doctor had made it too tight, I know they have safety procedures to avoid this issue now. It all really sucks, I had so many complications with it before and never thought I would be looking at this again, I’m in a small town and I guess only two doctors in the US perform revisions like what I’m looking at so I’ll be flying out to have it done (if that’s the issue). Anyhoo, your the only person so far I’ve found talking about this, thank you for that! Thank you for sharing and here’s to hoping 18 years of advancement works in my favor this time!

I haven’t had my “partial Nissen fundoplication yet, but your symptoms are so like mine, NOW, preoperatively, I felt the need to support and thank you. I hope you’re steadily improving and will get to a point where you can live a day without thinking about your health. Crazy to know how people don’t understand or even tolerate our pain and fear. At least we have each other. ESPECIALLY during a pandemic!

Thank you for the video. I had colon resection surgery for diverticulosis in September 2021 and then just had my hiatal hernia repair on Nov 23 2021. I'm still recovering. In July, my daughter had a stroke and I spent 45 days with her. I'm exhausted and depressed but looking forward to getting this behind me. On pureed food for two weeks. Only taking Tylenol for pain. 3 months down the road can't get here soon enough.

I suffered from heartburn for over 20 years and finally spoke with the right doctors who agreed I was a candidate for the surgery. I had surgery 5.weeks ago. So far is going well and had zero pain with surgery. Still taking pantoprazole so not sure yet if heartburn stopped. Excited about not taking meds again soon since they have affected my memory and suffered chronic fatigues for a while. When I asked specialists about my deteriorated memory they always said it had nothing to do with omeprazole and fatigue either but I am the one that know my health history. Found some great info and documentary on 44% association with memory loss and long term use of omeprazole. I hope this surgery can help avoid the meds

I am most likely having the TIF. I cannot live this way anymore. All of us that use Proton pump inhibitors or protonics etc... these meds do affect how are supplements or thyroid meds are absorbed and or any life and daily medications that are dire to us lose the effect. One thing to think about everyone. If you are taking PPI, please don't take them along with your other meds. Maybe take at night before bed as long as it isn't too late. Then take your life sustaining meds, BP, Heart, thyroid and even supplements 8 hours or more later. I pray you are doing well hun, you sure are young for this type of issue. God Bless You Too!!!

Thank you for sharing your story. I’m sure it’s helping so many people that are going through this because hiatal hernia is very painful to go through. I’ve been suffering with it for 12 yrs & recently it’s worse. I have to push it down & now it feels like it’s twisting. I’m on Pantoprazole & eating healthy. I can feel it fluttering like it’s going to happen, living in fear knowing that moment may happen when it it’s going to push up into my chest again. Been scared thinking of what the results may be when I have the endoscopy, if the Dr tells me to have the hernia surgery. So, I been looking it up on KZbin & I found you. I’m so sorry that you have gone through so much pain, Especially at such a young age. I pray you continue to heal & get better. May you have a good quality life, God protect you & keep you healthy.

This procedure is going to cost a lot of money and right now I am unemployed due to Covid 19 plus I am to sick to even work. I barely sleep. Please pray for me and God bless you and your family. @MissyTurco
@MissyTurco 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sam! Yes, if you get the normal fundoplication you will get a laparoscopic surgery with 5 small incisions... I would hardly call them "holes" haha I've gotten this surgery twice and you can hardly tell I have scars, and they are more in your belly area - my highest scar is just below my sternum and lowest scar is directly in my belly button so you can't see that one at all. I would work with your doctor to see which surgery is right for you & your lifestyle as well as the symptoms you are experiencing. If you are highly active and maybe on your belly a lot (I am a surfer and constantly on my stomach) just know that for me the TIF did not hold because of surfing. If you are nervous that the surgery won't work or will cause issues post-op, the TIF might be a better options as it is less permanent. Good luck!

Everything went well post surgery but of late I have started experiencing very bad reflux, bloating, chest pain and throat irritation that doesn't go away and severe mid-back pain. I've been back to my doctor and he prescribed sabezole for 2 weeks, but had also said something like having a repeat endoscopy to confirm if the surgery was successful. This is very stressful. Maybe any idea from your end I will appreciate. This issue is widespread not in America alone. For me I am a Kenyan.

Thanks for this post (I felt your pain). I have had the hiatus hernia for about 3 years now and oddly enough, it started whilst I was on holiday and couldn’t eat my greasy spoon breakfast! 3 years on and I’ve had enough of being sick. How many times have you tried to eat something that you think you may get away with, burgers and fries and 2 mouthfuls in and you throw up! I’m fortunate enough to work in a private hospital and getting it done under my private health cover. The in house doctor recommended that I don’t have the surgery as it’s forcing me to keep to a healthy diet. True , but I want to lead a normal life and go on holiday! (There is also an ethical question regarding his advice). I have an exploratory endoscopy tomorrow and from that, I will get a date for my main surgery. If you are interested, I will keep you and your viewers updated on my progress. Many thanks, Chris.

Hi! I'm interested in what you decide. I was supposed to get the partial fundoplication but my surgery appt had to be rescheduled ....twice! I'm just so worried about life AFTER the procedure. From what I've read, even with the partial, one can still be left with dysphagia, constant bloating, inability to vomit or belch. I'm so frustrated, trying to figure this out. Hope you are well:)

Had the TIF two years ago but symptoms came back. Turns out I had a 4cm HH (originally they though it was 1cm). Had HH surgery six weeks ago and had nausea and vomiting in the recovery room. Two weeks later I was in the ER because of a rapid heartbeat - looks like the post op nausea and vomiting messed up the fix. Now my hernia is pretty big I'm told so I'm looking to have it all redone. I can relate to Missy's frustration. Not sure how soon I can have it redone but I'm looking for an qualified surgeon on the redo. Hearing your story at least makes me feel like it's possible for this to be a success.

That liquid tastes like Feta cheese and pee. Re shoulder pain could the phrenic nerve that can sometimes (certainly not always) happens during fundoplication surgery. So you had TIF & Nissen both, i pray for you. How are you doing now? I cry that i’m just 26, and suffering from heartburn for last couple of months. 😞 I have a couple of questions: 1.So tif was a failure for you? 2.How long will nissen last? its complication? i assume you’ve a weak esophagus hence linx was ruled out. 3.How are you doing psychologically?
@MissyTurco
@MissyTurco 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! So yes, the TIF was a failure, but only because I don't think I gave my body enough time to heal before resuming sports, specifically surfing where you have to lay on your belly to do it. The TIF might have worked just fine if I was more careful. I got the nissen a little over a year ago now and I am still feeling great! I do have a weak esophagus, so I wasn't able to have a full 360 degree wrap (I got a 270 degree wrap) which could be the reason why I am still on PPIs. I have to start weaning myself off of them soon, I just need to find a remedy that will work in the mean time. Psychologically, still working on my food anxiety especially in social situations. But it definitely has gotten tremendously better I have to say. I used to be a huge ball of anxiety when I ate lunch with my co-workers, just anticipating the nausea and regurgitation which were the worst of my symptoms. I hope this feed back helps you! I apologize for the late response. Hope everything is going well for you on your health journey.

I do think that some videos on youtube help, and they inform you of good and bad, but my experience is that of many after this operation. I know this is going to sound negative, but although the Fundoplication is the answer to most peoples prayers, it isn't a long term answer for ... Just like PPIs. I'd had reflux issues 1986, and it took until 2012 to have my Fundoplication, and the good days only last for just over 2 years. Roll forward to 2017 the Fundoplication is non existent, and things were far worse than 2012. The damage had been done, and now the Fundoplication and compromised Vagus nerve has lead to even worse problems with swallowing, regurgitation, vomiting and upper /:lower GI tract issues. The operation is only offered up as a last ditch solution in the UK now, as the negatives outweigh the positives. If someone had told me my reflux issues were caused by low acid ( not high acid levels ), I'd of laughed at them, but that was the real cause back in 2012. Taking PPIs made it worse, and the Fundoplication caused more damage. Low acid causes the failure of the GI / Oesophageal interface / sphincter and altered motilty. ..... Just think before you opt to go under the knife, because once the surgery fails, you're in a whole new ball game.

how was u now, i thinking doing surgery to fix my hiatal hernia soon
@DoubtingThomas333
@DoubtingThomas333 2 жыл бұрын
Low acid is extremely rare. This condition is caused by a failure of one or several things. The most common is the lower oesophageal sphincter, but the upper one can go bad, and most people have a diaphram issue, hiatal hernia. Sometimes fixing the hiatial hernia (or doing an adjustment for someone without) can solve their reflux, but this would only be if their LOS/LES was working properly otherwise. There is a rare condition that can cause excess stomach acid, but that is simply treated by ablating the area of cells in the stomach that are overgrown or overactive in making acid.

Hi Jon, jealous that you live in California and I DONT! haha My surgeon is in South Florida. I recently just talked to a laparoscopic surgeon whom is also a surfer, and although your doctor might tell you 6 weeks post op and you can return to your normal activities, you'll have to give yourself a heck of a lot more time than that to heal, especially because it is in the belly area. Hi James from London! Wish I would have seen your message sooner to wish you good luck on your surgery. How's your recovery going? For me, the first 2 weeks were hell, and out of the blue one day I started feeling better. HGTV on repeat helped keep my mind off the pain (not sure if you get that channel in London, but House Hunters International and Good Bones were some of my favorites!) Make sure you sip on protein shakes throughout the day (my goal was 3 shakes 30g of protein each per day) and taking your steroid pill religiously (hopefully you got a pill because the liquid is like drinking rubbing alcohol) every day will help bring down the swelling so you can start introducing soft foods. Do not overdo it and start eating things that you are not supposed to even if you feel like you can. You don't want to stretch the area too much and cause any stitches to pop like it happened for me. Stay strong!! Praying for a speedy recovery and healthy life post-surgery! Cheers!
