2013 had my thyroid removed because of suspicious material indicated in the biopsy report. The surgery went well. The best news was no cancer. PTL!! The biggest challenge was how long it took to get my body adjusted to thyroid replacement meds. Very slow process to determine when the levels of meds were adequate. Finally 7 months later I wasn't so exhausted daily sleeping 10-12 hours daily. Currently doing well. I will be 80 this year. Thank you for your light hearted but very informative way of presenting important health information. Mike

I had to have one of my parathyroid glands removed four months ago, whilst I was under going a CT scan and a ultra sound scan they revealed that I had a couple of nodules on my Thyroid, my surgeon sorted both out at the same time. I got my pathology results 4 days before Christmas which were thankfully all clear. (Best Christmas present ever.)

I had my whole thyroid removed due to cancer. The Dr had to cut and resect my laryngeal nerve. I only had a hoarse whisper of a voice for about 4 months. One morning talking with my wife I had a “squeak “ in my whisper. Every day for about a month I had slight improvements in my voice. After that my voice finally returned to normal. So about 5 months total. All has been good for 2 years now. Taking Levothyroxine and calcium daily.

I found a nodule on the R lobe of my thyroid back in late 2018. GP sent me to an endocrinologist who did an ultrasound & fine needle aspiration (not painful) at the first visit. Results were negative & another ultrasound was scheduled in 6 months. It seemed larger to me at the end of the 6 months (it was visible to the naked eye). After the second ultrasound, done by a tech not the endo, I got a call to see the endo again. Had a second fine needle aspiration done & this time there were atypical cells, plus a second, very small, nodule on the L lobe had also been found. Decided removal was my best option & had a full thyroidectomy done in Aug. 2019. My voice was very deep (think "Luke, I am your father.") for several months and I couldn't project my voice. My dogs loved it, mom couldn't yell at them. I still think it's about a half an octave deeper than before the surgery. I definitely can't hit the higher notes when singing in the car anymore😂. I can yell at the dogs again though.

Very sorry you ended up needing your thyroid removed. Would you mind sharing what the pathology showed on your thyroid and nodules at surgery? Was it cancer or benign? I have hypothyroidism and a nodule.

@@christinahurt7505 Sorry for the late reply, I had to find the report. It was benign, a "ADENOMATOUS NODULE WITH FIBROSIS AND CALCIFICATIONS" to copy and paste from the report. The nodule was 3.4 cm. Hope that helps.

This is weird how this came up tonight, I am in UK and just felt a lump on my left side of my thyroid . I work in healthcare in a hospital and dreading this outcome. I have dealt with nodules for over 20 years. I wish you the same good luck I have had. I get a yearly ultrasound and so far no change. I initially had a needle biopsy and now just monitor them. Best of luck, you will be fine 🤞

In 2010 I had my thyroid removed due to having stage 3 cancer (papillary and follicular variant). I ended up losing my voice, and after doing vocal exercises my ENT did a Botox type procedure to restore my vocal chord. I had radioactive iodine treatment, which wasn’t bad except I was radioactive so couldn’t be around anyone for a few days (this was also during the time I had lost my voice). I’m happy to say I’m cancer free and visit my endocrinologist yearly.

I’m at the beginning of this process. I had a CatScan of my neck following a fall when the thyroid nodule was discovered. The ultra sound showed three of them, 2 TR4 with no fluid and 1 TR5 with punctate echogenic foci.Thus is noted as highly suspicious. I am now waiting for an appointment for the biopsy. This video and the comments are so helpful. I am coming up quickly on 86 years old and have been dealing with hoarseness since a whip lash injury in 2008. That may have been the cause for me. I had many nodules over some years and an enlarged thyroid gland resulting in many fine needle biopsies all but the last with no local anesthesia. I was lucky to get in the Test sent to the states. The biopsy came back I had a suspicious nodule with a 40% chance of it being cancer and not “the good kind”. I had a subtotal thyroidectomy performed by the ENT doctor who has done the surgery many, many times. When the pathology came back on the thyroid it was consistent with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Phew! My thyroid antibodies were raised in the bloodwork as well. The surgery went well and I have had compliments on my scar it is so small! 😊

You are in charge of your health is a lesson I learned when it came to my thyroid nodule. I saw THREE doctors who told me not to worry about the lump in my neck before I got someone to listen to me. I live in Ontario Canada and I kept going on about my lump to any doctor I saw. Had the ultrasound and it showed a mass. Had a 5 needle biopsy no sedation. Don't worry it was easy peasy. I was terrified. No cancer. Saw the ENT he nearly pulled my tongue out of my mouth when he was examining me. He was an excellent doctor. We decidied on no surgery unless it got bigger. In less than 6 months I was in having it removed as swallowing was hard sometimes. In six months the lump grew and grew. When it was removed with half of my thyroid it was the size of a golf ball and a half. Everything went well. No cancer. Only issue I had was my stitch got stuck and my family doctor was having a hard time getting it out. Eventually she got it out. That was 2011. We check my thyroid blood numbers every 6 months but so far so good!

My thyroid journey luckily didn’t involve cancer, but Graves. Was diagnosed in my late 30’s. My endo was able to control it with medications for several years. Started having problems. So we redid all the testing. Ultra sound, plus some scans with Nuclear Medicine. They found several hot and cold nodules. Dr wanted to send me for a needle biopsy. I was absolutely terrified. Plus at this point I was so tired of dealing with it. I asked my dr if we could skip that part and just do a thyroidectomy. She agreed. Several weeks later had an excellent surgeon do a total thyroidectomy. The Parathyroid was bruised and had a few issues with calcium. But it was probably one of the easiest surgery’s I have ever had. Pathology showed no cancer. Just a very messy thyroid. One thing that the Docs really didn’t touch in is heredity. I have two sisters who both battled with their thyroid. They also had theirs removed. Plus I have a daughter who also had graves. Her thyroid was ablated with radioactive iodine. So it definitely runs in the family. Thank you docs for all the good info

I have nodules on both sides of my thyroid. It started with just one but two years later I had one on the other side. I have had a 5 needle biopsy several times as they have grown. I was exposed to the radiation from Chernobyl for 3 years while in Germany. The radiation was over Frankfurt within 32 hours. The cloud of radiation ended up covering most of the European peninsula. Last year during my husband’s physical they found he also had nodules growing on his thyroid. His are not big enough to biopsy yet. Our doctor says we’re fine with the nodules as long as the tests come back negative for cancer.

I had a 6cm benign thyroid nodule that compressed my airway >30% and made swallowing difficult (choking on food frequently occurred). Surgery was the only option in Canada; however, I heard about radiofrequency ablation (RFA) being done outside of Canada. I was put in touch with Dr. Ralph Tufano in Sarasota, Florida. After consulting with him online, my husband and I flew down to meet his team. After a CT and ultrasound, I had the 2-hr procedure. It’s been over a year since the RFA and my nodule has shrunk >70% in volume. I can breathe and eat well again which is especially important for me as an athlete. I also do not require any medication since the procedure. I hope Ontario, Canada, will have RFA as an option for benign thyroid nodules in the near future.

Excellent segment! I had a thyroid nodule monitored for many years, annual US, twice annual bloodwork. In my case I had Hashimotos Thyroiditis with a multinodular goiter, and was put on thyroid replacement hormone. In recent years, a biopsy came back as indeterminate. We ran the gene testing mentioned here, and it flagged one gene abnormality that is associated with thyroid cancer half the time, and not the other 50% of the time. Given my nodule has very slowly grown to 4 cm, a half or full thyroidectomy was recommended. I opted for full, since by that time my thyroid had little function remaining, and if they only took half and it was found to be cancerous, I may have needed a second surgery to remove the other half. Last July I had the full thyroidectomy and everything went super smooth, no calcium dips from parathyroid glands potentially being stunned in surgery. I had already been on thyroid replacement hormone for many years, so my doctors just increased the dose a tiny bit, and all is well. The post surgery biopsy showed a few tiny cancers in my thyroid (papillary thyroid cancer), and one nearby lymph node, but not in the big 4cm nodule. My surgery is considered curative, but I will be monitored annually for a period of time. Thanks again for this informative episode. It is as my medical team has explained it to me. 😊

@@nayyabbukhari4055 It wasn’t bad as I thought it was going to be. The doctor cleaned the area, sprayed lidocaine on my neck. Told me not to talk, move or swallow when he puts the needle in. It’s a small pin prick and a little uncomfortable but tolerable. He uses a sonogram wand while doing the procedure making sure he’s in the nodule. He took a sample of the cells then pulled the needle out. Then he put another one in and went in a different spot taking out more cells. He did this a total of four times using four needles. That nodule was 4cm in size. I have another one the same size however he couldn’t get to it. It was too far down and deep inside. I’m still waiting on the results. Will know probably Monday or Tuesday and he’s about 95% sure that all 4 are benign as most of them are. I follow up in one year for another biopsy. The procedure took about 15 minutes. If you’re going to have this done, don’t worry about it because I super stressed out prior to doing this. Once it started, I realized it wasn’t that bad at all. I have a total of 4 Nodules two of which are 4 cm and 1.5 cm. I don’t know what caused them to come up. They take a blood test prior to this procedure and send it out to find out if you are hypo thyroid or hyper thyroid.. I am neither. My thyroid is normal. I apologize for this message being long. These cysts keep rupturing and I can't even crawl myself to the bed. I scream in pain. I've gone, a handful of times to the ER, only to lie on a stretcher for at least 6 hours (with an IV painkiller, if I'm lucky.) After I'm finally admitted, they ask me if I'm pregnant. I tell them "no." They do a pregnancy test. I'm not pregnant... So then they take another two hours to schedule an internal ultrasound. They find small traces of fluid that could be from a ruptured cyst. They give me a handful of painkillers, and send me on my way. I was at the end of the rope. this condition leaves me debilitated for a good five days out of every month. I'm a single mom, and a strong woman who has to be in severe pain to not get out of bed with twin four-year-olds... I found comment about Adam on a site, I reached out to him and told him my problems, his words were "don't worry, your suffering will end after taking my medication". I ordered his herbal medication took it as prescribed and the medication flushed out the cysts. I had thyroid cancer at 29. My PCP found it on an annual exam. It was a visible hard lump that I hadn't noticed. My only complaint at the exam was that I was constantly tired. The endocrinologist took a needle biopsy (it looked huge) by elevating himself over me and forcing it straight down into the lump. I was worried he was going to go through my neck. He only took one biopsy, and I don't recall having had an ultrasound. Once notified, it took me a moment to realize that a positive result was not a happy result. I had a complete thyroidectomy and at another hospital drank radioactive iodine and sat in isolation waiting for my radioactivity to drop to legally reenter society. It's been 30 years...

I posted thanks for this video a while ago after I was told I had a thyroid nodule and to "watch and wait," and have another ultrasound in a year. I had my second ultrasound in October and this time, because there are "changes," a needle biopsy was recommended. That isn't scheduled until March. My blood tests for the thyroid are within normal range. I'm not too worried but I wish it wasn't such a long time, almost 5 months, between a scan and a needle biopsy. I rewatched the video to refresh my memory and I'm even more grateful this time. Thanks for your detailed information on so many topics. When u get your biopsy have them deaden the area so they can get a goof sample I had three biopsies first 2 no deadening 1 with the one with 5 samples had half removed he did a test on the nodel while I was out on operating table and it wasn't cancer! My Thyroid levels were good before surgery but my hair was falling out and I was super tired before surgery now after surgery my levels are not good so now I am taking Thyroid medicine. Good luck

Here’s my thyroid cancer story. Been on ever increasing amounts of levothyroxine for the past 20 years. Had an mri for my neck pain and there was an incidental finding of a thyroid nodule. Had a fine needle biopsy on the right nodule. Negative for cancer. Decided to have surgery to remove the right half of thyroid. They send the removed thyroid to the lab before they close me up. If it’s cancerous, they will remove my left half. Lab report indicated no cancer. Closed me up. Later in the week after a closer look from the lab, found cancer in the nodule. Two weeks later, went back under to have the left half removed. The nodule in the left half was also cancerous. Had to do a radioactive iodine treatment that made me radioactive for about a week. Had to stay in my room. Every six months I get an ultrasound and bloodwork. Last time, they found a lymph node that was enlarged. Did a fine needle biopsy. Did not fine anything. But not feeling warm and fuzzy.

I had a partial thyroidectomy a number of years ago and yearly I get ultrasounds to track nodules on the part existing. Now one of the nodules as grown and my Dr is sending me for a aspiration biopsy. Ultrasound was in mid Dec 2023 but I can’t have the biopsy until March of this year due to our insane wait times we endure here in Canada. It’s rather scary having to wait so long and I’m sure people are very anxious. No wonder mental health is such as issue these days. Anyway, thanks Docs…this is the best explanation I’ve ever received about my condition.

I had nodules but normal thyroid function and my biopsies were begign. So was given an choice... Either leave them alone or remove my thyroid and take meds forever. I followed my gut and got a thyroidectomy. My pathology report from the removed gland arrived days later showing 2 of the nodules had cancer inside. I'm glad they're gone!

I had this same experience! I had mine removed as well and found out it was 14 centimeters, a normal thyroid gland should be about 4 centimeters. It was growing towards the back of my neck, they never caught it with just checking my neck while swallowing. They only found it was bigger than it should be when they did an ultrasound. It was such a rough road trying to find the right level of thyroid hormones.

Going in tomorrow to have thyroid surgery. I have a nodule the size of an apple. Put it off as long as I could. Went to 3 Endocrinologist until I found the surgeon who I am using now. The other 3 just wanted to take everything out now? New surgeon wants to save as much as possible. I have to go for an ultrasound because a ct scan for an accident found a 3 centimeter nodule. You've answered all of my questions due to being nervous about the outcome. Great info! I wish you would have discussed the multinodular aspect. I have large multinodules on both sides and have for 10 years. All labs always normal and I've been biopsied twice. Recently one grew significantly and left me feeling like I was choking (turns out it was fluid). There are methods for treatment/shrinking these nodules such as ablation and ethanol. We did ethanol and shrunk it significantly. I'd love to know your thoughts on ablation as that's next for me. Thanks!

My story with my thyroid nodule started 12 years ago. I had a needle biopsy that showed papillary cancer. I was not concerned because I knew that I'd had the nodule for a few years already. My doctor and I decided to just monitor it through yearly ultrasound. It stayed stable at about 9mm for 12 years. Last year a new nodule was found. Will be having another ultrasound soon. We'll see if it is growing. May have to have surgery (hopefully just the right side where both nodules are) at this point but I am happy that I waited with the first nodule so that I didn't need to try to function with thyroid supplements for all those years. I'm 69 yrs. old.

I noticed a lump on the right hand side of my neck. Did a call with my family doctor (COVID lockdown so no in person visits). Referred me to an ultrasound. US showed a cyst, not of concern, but on left side there was a small growth. Referred to endocrinologist. Another US and then another with fine needle aspiration. Referred to surgeon. Had partial thyroidectomy. Did not do complete, despite the cyst on the right hand side. Day surgery. As I was getting dressed, I noticed drops of blood on floor. Called for assistance. Additional stitches put in. A few days later, infection set in. Waited in ER for hours to get a prescription for antibiotics (I had self diagnosed as a strep infection), but needed confirmation to get prescription. Partial paralysis of my vocal cords - has improved but I will not be singing in a band! Continue to monitor the right hemisphere with annual US.

This was an excellent presentation, but the main part was not discussed about after they remove your thyroid. You’re on a medication the rest of your life to do what the thyroid was doing. It’s been five years now and I’m still having trouble getting the correct dosage of medication to keep my weight from going up and my hair from falling out.

I had thyroid cancer in 1998, had the right side removed, and was told that I have Hashimoto disease. Dr. Gilbert Daniels (Endocrinologist) who headed up this department at Massachusetts General Hospital would do a needle biopsy on my nodules in his office without any numbing. He would take 3 samples each time. The right side was removed when the margins were not good. I would say the needle biopsy (fine needle aspiration) was uncomfortable, not super painful, with tenderness afterwards. It's been 26 years and I'm still going! My two sisters also have thyroid issues.

25 years ago i found a lump on my thyroid. Went to an endocrinologist who did blood work first. All normal results. Did a needle biopsy in his office, no anesthesia. Came back benign. Did a test to find out if nodules were "hot" or "cold". Mine were hot. Started me on low dose synthroid to try to shrink nodules or keep them from growing. After about a year did another ultrasound which showed nodules growing larger so then i took radioactive iodine to kill my thyroid instead of surgery. Synthroid doses then were increased as he monitored my levels, and nodules decreased in size. Still have them but i get ultrasounds every year or two to monitor size incase they enlarge and put pressure on my esophagus and surrounding areas. I do notice a change in my voice since all this started, Especially when i sing. Sometomes my vocal cords will feel stressed when i sing.

You can have a normal TSH, T3 and T4 and still have thyroid cancer. I just found out that I have a 8cm nodule as of three years ago. Fast forward to today. I've lost over 53lbs without trying. Now they're telling me I should have had it taken out, but my primary physician NEVER told me it was there.

I was in a car accident a few weeks ago. I went to the ER where they did a full body CT scan. No serious injuries but they found a nodule on the left side of my thyroid. My family doctor has ordered an ultrasound which I am having done in the morning. I'm also hypothyroid. Diagnosed in 2015. I can tell something is there ever so slightly when I swollow. My family doctor told me finding a cancerous nodule is about 1%. I'm glad it was discovered. Maybe I'll find out if my family doc has been under treating my thyroid this whole time. I suspect he keeps my thyroid medication too low.

This was great. I had Vegas nerve damage recently and my vocal cord (left) is challenged. This was a carotid-carotid bypass w/ prosthetic, carotid subclavian transposition and a zone 0 TBE. One of the ‘possible’ outcomes was vocal cord damage. Always learning.

I go on 7/25 for a full Thyroidectomy. I am a nurse, and a dr who is a colleague found the large visible nodule. US done, then FN aspiration, uncertain results. My mom had thyroid cancer. ENT wants to remove it all due to swallowing and breathing symptoms. Thanks foe the informative video

Wow, I had fine needle aspiration done on 3 nodules, over 3 years ago. Benign and not hot. I've never been told to get any follow-up done, ever. No further FNA, no ultra-sounds, nothing. And this was in Toronto.

I had a bone scan in my early 40’s at a health fair. I was diagnosed with osteopenia. Through nuclear work up they found nodules on my thyroid and parathyroid. I had them removed due to leaching of calcium from my bones, and my osteopenia is and has been stable. I’m 75 now. I also take thyroid medication due to hypothyroidism.

A considerable part I find often that's not addressed that we cover with patients is the nervous system and stimulating the vagus nerve. When I had thyroid nodules (and I was supposed to have one biopsied for cancer but managed to avoid it), it was actually uncovering the heavy emotional aspects that were a part of the condition. I wish I would have seen this video before they removed my thyroid. I had no cancer but a Nodule that was the size of a dime at the start and 40 years later is probably the size of a quarter. Sent me right to a surgeon , never did a biopsy. The surgeon scared me into having it removed. He said I may experience breathing problems later on. I wish I didn't agreed to have it removed

I am in the less than 1% category regarding losing my voice after my right thyroid glad was removed. No cancer but I have been told my right vocal chord is paralyzed. My surgery was November 3 2022, today is August 18 2024. I can speak because my left vocal chord has stretched some however my voice is very raspy and people often have a hard time understanding me. I went to voice therapy for 8 weeks. Additionally my right vocal chord is paralyzed in the upright position which reduces my ability to breathe. I am 68 years old.

Very interesting. I have multiple nodules in both lobes. Ive had ultrasounds and biopsies/aspirations. The largest is fluid and solid, so far, benign. What i find negligent on the part of my doctors is that NONE of them have done any blood testing regarding the thyroid. In past blood testing, my calcium levels have been high. None of my doctors seem concerned in the slightest.

Thank you for this video. You are giving us very important knowledge about the thyroid gland. I have thyroid nodules. Biopsies done first time in 2000 . I had 2 nodules on my thyroid. I had fine needle biopsy. It was negative. Now the thyroid nodules increased in size. First biopsy negative. Second biopsy has been negative also but still have nodules that have to be monitored because they have increase in size. So my doctors monitors them.

Thank you for doing another excellent video! The timing of me finding this video is fantastic, it has helped me have a better understanding of what is going on. In 2009 I had a fine needle biopsy, all was good. No freezing, it was okay, although make sure you dont swallow during the procedure! My Dr retired and I started with a new Dr in the fall of 2022. The Dr did a follow-up ultrasound in 2022 as it has been a while, they found some new nodules. She had me do a follow-up ultrasound in December 2023. She called me that afternoon, it seems the nodules have gotten larger, since the previous scan. I am waiting to hear from the hospital to go for another needle biopsy, I am hoping for the same results. I cant help but worry....

Forty years ago, must have been years before I was born (ha, ha, ha) my GP, as they were called then, found a lump on my thyroid during my "annual poke and prod." I don't remember if I had any diagnostic tests done but I did have surgery, with his assurances that if it was cancer it was probably the 'best cancer' to have. It was a pretty scary time for me as I was a newly single mom with two little boys under three. As it turned out, he didn't have to remove all of my thyroid and was able to leave my parathyroids. I haven't needed any further treatment but do have follow-up blood tests included in my annual check-ups. It turned out that the scariest part was the staples used to close the incision across my neck which made me look like Frankenstein. To my good fortune, my toddlers didn't know about that character or they might have been even more hesitant to cuddle!. .

They took 4 samples , some were a good size and they said we will just keep an eye on it. It bothers me because my mom had hers out (I was young so I don't remember if it was cancerous) so that makes me worry a bit more

I believe TPO level should be check in patients who are symptomatic and have a higher level but still WNL TSH Endocrinologist have decreased the normal TSH range but not all primary physicians are aware of the changes. Seeing an Endocrinologist for thyroid issues is important in my opinion.

Here’s my thyroid story. In 2010 my thyroid was very large and expanded down into my chest. Had the left side removed with the parathyroid as well. Couple years later I found out that it wasn’t all removed from my chest. There was a third section of thyroid in my heart cavity. I had surgery from a thoracic surgeon that opened my sternum like open heart surgery. That surgeon was a heart transplant surgeon. So that was thyroid surgery #2. A couple years later the right side of my thyroid was enlarging and showing signs of growing down into my chest again. Yep, thyroid surgery number 3. My parathyroid was saved on this side. But now on thyroid meds for life.
