Thanks. funny thing is that without a constant base note, all these fingering is in G ionian right? the A Doria is just the 2n position of the G ionian scale, or this way of thinking is wrong? i thought that modes always need a base note to bring the color of each mode. cheers!

@@Gledii You are right : it all sounds like G Major to me... with different starting points. This is the way I started studying modes decades ago and it didn't work for me. My ears began to sense the flavor of modes when I studied G Ionian, then G Dorian, G Phrygian etc. *with the appropriate chord in the background* . That's the way Gambale explains it in _Modes : No More Mysteries_ and he also plays them very mechanically in _Chopbuilder_

@@Gledii you're close. It's not that it's the second position of g. It's that a is the key. The notes are the same but it's the start and end point that's different. Use the c major notes over a minor and you'll see where you start to resolve phrases

Why can't people just be thankful for free guitar lessons from well-accomplished players? Unbelievable! AND, evidently some of these guys have never seen a pretty woman before. Some of the worst and unintelligent comments on the net have to be on Guitar World videos. This is not the first one with terrible comments. What a bunch of ungrateful little bitches and pervs all together in one place to embarrass both male and female guitarists everywhere... Nice! As Nita said, this is the first video in a series. Not everyone is already at Vai level, and she has to begin at the beginning, like any logical human. Then again, apparently some viewers here are not logical humans. Where I run into trouble is scar tissue between my first and second finger limiting how I can spread my hand. Watching you, I think if I choose my guitar wisely I can manage a major second stretch between my first and second finger and press on with my pinky to the next major second stretch. Then the only problem is tendons in the top of my hand trapped in scar tissue. That and my pinky is slightly psycho when I try to aim it LOL. I'm carefully learning my way through it. Catching my hand in a milling machine cost me about 20 years of playing, and all of this adaptation time. It's fun though, and after about 5 years of playing again I am happy with my progress. Plus it's forced me to educate myself on my instrument, so win win.

If you want to hear the sounds of the modes without dealing with pesky guitar fingerings, play the white keys on the piano for the modes of the C major scale. Find middle C. The white keys from it to high C are the Ionian mode. The white keys from D to D are the Dorian, etc. Then you can pick the modes you like best to work on with guitar.

I Always have massive respect for Nita and how clearly she explains things. however I'm trying to move from the cage style of playing to the three notes per string system but I'm struggling to understand how you practically use it to move along the neck. in CAGED you are essentially playing the mode pattern that starts at the end of the last pattern so you miss lydian and locrian but all notes of the scale on the neck are covered. therefore in my head you would learn the same way for 3nps which means you very neatly play every other mode to move along the neck. You still learn all the modes as it depends if you are playing in a minor or major key . BUT ive never seen anyone teach it like this, its always one mode afterthe next, but in practice when people are soloing along the neck are they literally in their head visualising each pattern change in order (which seems mental as it changes every fret) , or every other pattern, or even just a singular octave pattern and just k owing what the pattern will be for the string below (if you just learn the pattern order per string as opposed to boxes)? please help my brains gonna explode lol!

A few things to point out about the crappy people on KZbin 1st every time someone sees a female metal player they either have to talk about how hot she is or discredit her entirely. 2 this is a scales video if you're harping about tone then you're probably the same person who buys thousands of dollars worth of gear but can't play single lick. Sure the tone isn't great but the lesson sure is. 3 if you seen her live performances or listen to any of her CDs you'll hear quite an awesome tone. Lastly it's an exercise a learning tool nothing else she's not trying to impress you or sell you her tutorial videos. It's clear the video provider paid her to offer beginner and intermediate lessons. I suggest taking a look at some of her CDs or seen her live and then make your judgments. Women in metal deserve more than "uh huh you're hot" or "She's crap her tone is shit, blah blah is better than her." Who cares????

Well, thank you for the kind words, you see I'm a guitar teacher in Mexico, Chihuahua actually, and every time I see a video on modes I watch it, because it is not an easy subject. Many guitar players just ignore them because there is a misconception that modes are "Just a major scale" and there are scale degrees on every mode that have tonal characteristics and as I like to say "nutritional value". Love Nita! I'm already seeing the effect of her influence on beginning musicians, namely younger girls who pick up the guitar for the first time. While some of the comments here may throw some shade toward Nita, we must not forget that the guitar is for everybody. I like Taylor Swifts pop music and it serves a good enetertainment purpose. But it's that is not the same as serious musicianship--Attempting to master this instrument and inspire others to pick up the guitar. Good ole fashion guitar playing is alive and well thanks to Nita, Gretchen, Lita and others ( including a few " boys " like Satch, Gilbert, Petrucci, etc. . . ) who pursue a long lasting career of serious musicianship.

Most people are taught the pentatonic scale which is 2 notes per string if you follow the rules but a lot of people don't realize there are 5 pentatonic positions just like switching to the diatonic scale or major system where there are 7 notes and 7 positions. Ionian or major scale dorian phrigian lydian mixolydian aeolian or natural minor 6th tone and locrian.

Beginner question... the modal sound comes from shifting the modal center, right? Playing a G Major scale from A to A doesnt make it A Dorian if your tonal center is still the sound of a G Major chord? I am confused.

Ok 3NPS are cool and all, but stop calling "modes" things that are just the major scale positions. You're not playing modal just because you switch position on a I IV V Rock'n'Roll. As she said herself, you can play whichever one over your "tonal" piece, so learn that as "positions", then you'll learn what modes are.

HeadbangoO Flat out a mode is defined as the major scale (any scale) beginning at one of the scale tones. There are seven scale tones and seven modes (of the major scale) So if you begin the scale on the 2nd scale tone and go seven tones up the scale,in essence you have created a new tonal center and a new scale (sound) from with in the major scale. Using the seven scale tone position 3nps right is a perfect way to start a modal scale pattern

People can say what they like about her level of playing being sub par, but I don't see them making a living from it! In fact the players that are tend to be complimenting her playing, not putting her down (or anyone else for that matter!) I know that there are great players out there that aren't earning, but usually the better you are at something the less you feel the need to prove it and the more you'll attempt to boost the self esteem of those that aren't as good yet, it's that that's helping the insulters get there, so I really don't see the need for it!

GuitarGear With J.M How is it "worth nothing"? She covered all seven positions of the major scale. There are plenty of beginners who are not familiar with this material. Yes it was a very basic lesson but she did say she was going to be covering more in future videos. Also she didn't say when the song goes to "whatever cord" you can still play G major. She said "if you're in G major" meaning when a song uses chords diatonic to the key of G major. Using her example of A minor, if a song started with a G major chord and then change to A minor, you could absolutely continue playing the G Major scale because A minor is diatonic to the key of G major. This chord change would simply change the modality of the song from Ionian to Dorian. Any cords not diatonic to the key would represent either a key change or a "borrowed" chord, which is a whole nother topic.

Chill the beans there buddy, basic point is that diatonic scales are typically played 3 notes per string, it's not rocket science and it shouldn't take more than 4 minutes to explain that concept. This is supposed to be 'Mode Mastery', it's a basic modal concept with zero explanation of how modes are actually constructed. Teaching modes in this way just leaves beginners thinking that modes are just random shapes you're supposed to memorise.

efa666 First of all I agree with you that the tone in this video sucks! I also agree that (while not technically incorrect) teaching the modes as being the seven different positions or patterns of the major scale can be confusing to a beginner as it doesn't teach you anything about actually playing modally. This method of teaching kept me confused for a long time because for some reason most teachers don't seem to delve into the bigger picture. I do think your criticism is a little harsh considering this is only the first installment in a series of videos. Do you seriously think it should take no more than four minutes to teach modal mastery? Also while 3 NPS patterns may be "typical" in the metal world, that doesn't really seem to be the case in most other genres of music. And yes 3 NPS is a relatively "new" concept compared to the older CAGED style patterns. Having said that It wouldn't surprise me if she doesn't get into modal playing since (as I said) most teachers don't seem to go into that, but I'll give her the benefit of the doubt for now.

This is a major problem in music, teaching note scales and not the fundamentals, which is the chord tones. Scales do not outline harmony, its a falacy. GMaj. GBD, GMaj7 = GBDF#. One should learn these all over the neck in all inversions. Learn to target these with approach notes with the other notes from the scale or chromatic notes. Not saying Nikita is wrong, but outlining basic harmony isnt taught. As a bassist, most bass players dont know this.
