Great review. I like the fact that the charging port is on the battery, inside the flashlight. You give up a little charging convenience, but you get better water resistance.

I have read through a lot of the comments and saw a lot of complaining about the turbo runtime of 20 seconds. If I am out walking the dog at night, and I see something unknown, and I turn a light onto turbo in the objects direction, I can usually identify said object (dog, bush, person) within 2 seconds. For me an ultra bright "flash" mode that only lasted 5 seconds would still be useful. If its not useful to you that's fine does not mean they should limit the flashlight to 1000 lumens or whatever it can sustain for an hour.

Man, I gotta hand it to you, you do know how to make a great review video. I've Subscribed. It does blow the mind that human beings can make such an amazing product and not have it cost an arm and a leg. The 5-year warranty is great though I do agree with you that 1 lumen moonlight mode is better than its 2 lumen. I will have to later on checkout the flashlight you say is your preferred EDC. Thanks much for making this video!

Hey man nice review. I thought the interface was weird at first because you have to turn it off then back on to change modes. Then I realized from off you have direct access to moonlight, your memorized mode, and turbo. And when it's on you can jump straight to turbo if you need to. For the size this thing is a beast.

I use this as my EDC at work (Security). By far the best I've carried. I've read comments about charging the battery externally. Seriously? This is awesome. Buy another battery as I did and I have it in my tac bag. When I need to charge I just plug the "C" type into the battery and place the spare into the flashlight and I am good to go. The 4400 modes are just show offs to me. I like to hit those modes for bragging rights. I have it programmed in tactical mode. 1 click for battery meter, 2 clicks for Eco mode, 3 clicks for strobe mode and I have low mode programmed for long press. I have the clip on the other side on the flashlight directly opposite of the switch button. Can easily pull the flashlight out and the switch is right under my thumb every time. Thank you Nitecore! Would love to see an E4K Version 2.

Great review as always. I’ve got the Thorfire VG-15 1070 lumens Flashlight. Have had it for about 4 years. Got it from Amazon for about £8. It’s got four modes of brightness, plush the strobe setting all controlled via the little rubber button at the base. It came with the battery and the belt clip. Terrific value and it’s still going strong. Battery lasts ages. If I didn’t have this I probably get the one you’ve just reviewed but it’s just so good. Best little torch I’ve ever had.

It’s a terrific compact little torch, 12.7cm in length, great grip, terrific illumination, about the same as the one in this review and it’s lasted so well. I did get a lanyard with it but I have no idea where it is now! Lol. I’m a Security Officer so it gets a lot of use. You have to take the battery out to charge it so that might be a an issue for some. It’s old fashioned in that sense.

I have a few Nitecores. HC65 headlamp, EC23 every day, and an EC4S. I like them all for different reasons. The thing I like about the EK4 is that it's got the power of my big EC4S, but closer to the size of my EC23. One thing I do not like about my flashlights is that I'm always fumbling to find the button on them in the dark. They are small and not raised or otherwise easily distinguishable. The EK4 seems to fix this with the square bezel around a big round button. Looks like it would be much easier to locate in the dark or from a pocket/bag. I would love it if all Nitecores had a recessed button in a magnetic tailcap. Great review, I like the sleeve for using other sized batteries (all of my batteries). I might pick this one up, I like the weight and power output.

to properly measure the temperature you have to basically hold that thermometer right up to the flashlight. the thermometer senses in the shape of a cone, similar to a flashlight, the further you are away the bigger the measured area is - the laser just shows the middle and the measurement is an average. on the side of these thermometers they usually indicate the dimensions of the cone so you get an idea of the max distance you can measure from

I like some of the unique features of the light. But it seems marketed toward the lumen hungry crowd. So it seems this really is about a 1k lumen light. If the 4k level is really only usable for 20 sec or so at a time that's not terribly useful IMHO. (I mean that mode, not the light overall) This seems to be a common issue with many high output small form factor lights. They claim big numbers but when you read the fine print or watch a thorough review (thanks BTW!) you find out these impressive numbers are really only available with special batteries and/or for brief periods due to battery limitations or heat limitations. My current EDC is a ThruNite Archer 2A V3. Yes, it is "only" 500 lumens max, but it can actually run at max for extended periods of time. Well, a few minutes at a time anyway is the most I've personally needed and used it on max. Most of the time I have it on low/medium (17/75 lumens) walking the dog etc. But the times I've wanted/used max output I've needed it for 5 or 10 minutes at a time. I'm not really griping against this Nitecore - looks like a great light. I'll ask here though, are there any over 1k lights (preferably throwers or modest throwers) that are really usable at their max output and not in full-on searchlight form factor? I also have a ThruNite TN4A HI that works well but honestly due to it's girth I don't carry/use it as much as I thought I would. Just so you don't think I'm a ThruNite salesman or AA battery only guy I also have and really like a Fenix PD35 (18650 powered) and a Fenix TK35 I'm less enamored with. The issue with the TK35 is that at the highest output it is really only usable for a minute or two. Then something happens, either it has pulled the batteries down enough (dual 18650s) or heated enough that it limits - only it shuts off, it doesn't step down gracefully (the PD35 does). You have to turn it back on and rapidly toggle to a lower mode - extremely frustrating. You'll note though all of these are right around the 1k lumen mark. Still looking for that 2k or more lumen light, preferably with 18650 batteries, before I step up from my current crop of 1k lights... Thanks for the nice review!

The Nitecore E4K looks like a very good flashlight. The best part of the light to me is that they include a battery adapter so that you can use 2 primary x CR123A batteries in an emergency, and even RCR123A batteries. This is a BIG plus. Olight are you listening? ;-) Nitecore calls this a two way clip, to me more like a reversible clip if one can re-position it. Can that be done Chrispy? My closest light to this is the Olight Seeker Pro2. It has a bidirectional clip so I tried clipping it to a bill of a cap. It may not be comfortable for standard use but it does work, e.g. if you needed hands free to change a tire or provide some medical care. Wimpy caps and hats probably won't. LOL. What I don't like about the Nitecore E4K and the Olight Seeker Pro 2 is that they both come in Crappy White (CW). I prefer Neutral White (NW) for better perception. I understand their may be efficiency trade-offs but I think, at least the flashlight manufacturers should specify the color temperature and if needed perhaps encourage the LED manufacturers on this issu. Chrispy, thanks for the review. I like the Spyderco shirt. :-) One of may favorite knives is the Spyderco HAP40 Wharncliffe Delica.

I'm not sure but a Tail cap light is a must for me. Personally tho I cannot stand how my olights and fenix lights have the tail switch but then I have to try and find the side switch in the dark to increase power levels. They make them too flush imo they should be raised to find it easier

Good review! This light is indeed interesting. I have Nitecore EA41 and HC30(headlamp). Great lights. But they have a very stupid feature I hope Nitecore will get rid of: while moonmode and turbomode have direct access they are still included in the memory. SO annoying and unnecessary! I tried to understand your description of E4K: are moonmode and turbomode excluded from the memory?

Remember when 1000 lumen lights were top of the line? Now you can get a good one for 25 bucks. The price for these will come down too, and that's when I might buy one. Or not, because I can't see a situation where I would ever need a 4K light.

@@ChrispyThings Nitecore should specify the step-down times. Olight does. IIRC Fenix does not on its page, but at least it does in its manual: fenix-pd36r-1-user-manual.pdf. I am not sure if Fenix is candid with their other lights. Adam, you are right to expect Nitecore to specify the correct details, but to expect a light this size to be able to remain in turbo mode that long is unrealistic. Chrispy, I came back to add that I think a 2 lumen moonlight mode on a flashlight of this size is probably reasonable, even though I understand the usefulness of a 1 lumen mode to avoid disturbing others. A trade off. It is bright enough to do a lot of tasks without having to go up to low. My neutral white Olight H1R Nova has a 2 lumen moonlight mode, I always liked that it was so useful, felt comfortable reading, and ran for so long at the 2 lumen level. For comparison the Olight Pro Seeker 2 has a 5 lumen level and the Olight Pro has a 3 lumen [yeah I know the spec says 5] level. A lot better than the 30 lumen Eco level on the Fenix PD36R. I have found the more diffuse the beam the more reasonable it is to have a slightly higher level for moonlight.
