Post-liberalisation, Bengaluru suburbs expanded in a very unplanned way, especially the areas in East and South East. One can hardly find a 80ft wide main road. There seems to be no vision regarding the development of towns around them and the roads and transportation around Bengaluru. Just take Google maps and see the road in areas outside the Outer Ring Road.

I am from Mangalore and would love to see a high speed connection between Mangalore-Bangalore. After working for decade+ in Bangalore I would love to work from my city full time. I am grateful to Bangalore for providing me a job that I love. But city has become too expensive, too loud and too traffic prone from the first days of my life in the city. I hope Bangalore gets more metro lines even to connect areas that is still under development. But as Gadakri ji said, Bangalore need satellite cities like Mangalore, Mysore, Hassan to decongest it.

Mangalore, Mysore already has infra and similar companies, so IT, MFG companies do not have to start from scratch. Also Mangalore is located right in middle of Kerala and Maharashtra. On Bangalore roads, every junction, service lane merging, joints, etc are designed and constructed to give you an off-roading experience on the city road. Bus stops right before junctions expanding lanes from 3 to 5 and squeezing back to 2 lanes in span of 50 mts is high intellectual thinking. Parking is well planned and managed across the city. Building entries and foot path height is precisely engineered. U-Turns and lane mergings are a bless to Bangalorians. With all such innovations and extreme engineering, Govt still cannot understand why traffic blocks happen in Bangalore. For example, Electronic City Nice Road Exit is a benchmark for Govt's planning, execution and quality of work.

IT industry is the most malleable in terms of centralisation. Technically, you don’t need large campuses to work effectively as shown by the pandemic. If government incentivises WFH policies, a lot of the burden on cities will be distributed to surrounding towns and their local economies will also improve. Another important point is to incentivise public transport for state and local governments. Make the buses and trains stick to a proper schedule, and people will prefer to use them. With widespread internet availability, you can also market buses and trains as time-savers because you don’t need to bother about driving. Lastly, invest in local businesses with an emphasis on hand made creative products. In this era of AI, humans are only limited by their creativity. Invest in creativity. Let the machines handle the repetitive tasks. People won’t migrate to large cities if they can find a good quality of life in their hometowns.

As a transportation planner who has lived in Bengaluru for 3 years, I have always pondered about solving this problem. The metro construction should be completed ASAP and augmented with feeder bus system. Additionally, the major trunk roads should be made access-controlled. And the signals should be equipped with traffic cameras with ANPR technology to issue e-fines to traffic rule violators (especially those who make extreme lane changes after crossing the stop line). Air taxi is not going to be affordable for most people.

I am from Karnataka. The main reason for this traffic are 1. Bengaluru has a Rapid grouth after 1990. Even population had trippled since 30 years. 2. The rapid growth was not predicted by the government. 3. The major traffic congestion takes place on outer Ring road Junctions which leads to IT parks, Industrial areas from Residential area. 4. Uncontrolled urban grouth around the outer ring road. Irregular planning around IT parks. 5. Needs public transportation options like suburban railways, BRTS. 6. As per planning present metro should have 5 lanes but it is having only 2 lanes. 7. The reality is most of the central govt doesn’t concentrate on Karnataka or Bengaluru. Example Bengaluru metro is only metro project funded by state government thats why it is called as namma metro. 8. The Karnataka state govt should focus on developing tier 2 cities alternative to Bengaluru. Maharashtra, Tamilnadu, Gujarat have alternative cities 9. Bengaluru needs self resilient planned satellite cities like Delhi, Mumbai 10. The state govt must have vision towards infra development rather than freebies.

Decentralization of the IT offices by creating satellite cities around Bangalore is a good idea. In addition, Bangalore needs an underground metro system with a tight grid. This grid should be dense enough to allow residents to get to a metro station within a 10-15 min walk from their residences. This will be expensive to build but this is the only practical solution for Bangalore. We shouldn't be thinking of adding more roads but find a way to remove vehicles from the existing roads. Any more delays will only escalate the costs further.

It's on US guys, not on Nitin, Not on BJP, not Congress (we can keep blaming or asking for help but won't do any good) Here's how and Why: 1) Educated working professionals are the real 21st century UN-educated culprits 🤕sadly for this. We need serious real education. We live in a environment (in-fact we see everyday) - where just one person going to office via his/her own car. Now isn't this our right to enjoy this comfort, in-fact they pay taxes isn't it? My comfort> everything. Why not use two wheelers/ cycles? Oh! we have money right, so why care + it's the politicians duties to fix our world & make it a better place, isn't it? 2) Every MNC, Startups, Companies offices in India, should start their main/ head offices in rural areas🎑. #Zoho has already started, once we do this - money flows to rural & sub-urban areas, that's where real impact starts happening. 3) Move horizontally & vertically to a limit - we prefer having tall buildings because that's what we see in other countries, but we in India have still acres of land that's lying unutilized, we need to start making use of that. When we move horizontally progress will start happening in every part of India - resulting in better infra, roads, safety and plus better standard of living (with parents, or may be in less pollution). Restrictions on vertical floors and expand horizontally, the more the company expands "Horizontally" the more India grows. 4) The cyclists or walkers to offices should be really rewarded🤩 - they are the professionals who are really saving this world, doing their bit (not just CSR activities, please, but everyday what we do matters). Future generations will be thanking them or they can tell to them, oh! we did our best to save our planet. (Living nearby to office, may increase your budget a bit, but will be at peace, plus you can rent that unit out to someone - time to step out of our comfort zones) 5) Start voting guys😶 - Yes a message to UN-educated again. Most of the people who have migrated to these cities, don't vote. They will just post here and there on social media and that too when something happened with them or with their loved ones. If you are not voting, anyway you don't a right to complain either. Let's live nearby, go via cycle or walk, move to rural areas, expand horizontally and let's Vote. Simple solutions, but DO we/ CAN we really do it?

I agree with this entirely, but most people need a nudge to change behavior especially for alternative modes of transportation like cycling and multi-modal commute. In many other countries, cycling is incentivized by both the governments and employers. They give tax rebates for cycling and also for buying any cycle for work. In France, somewhere I read that their government is offering 4000 euros to those who are willing to exchange cars for an electric cycle.

The understanding of traffic problems in Bengaluru is no rocket science. The culprit is the MOVEMENT of workforces to industrial hubs from far away located residential areas. Lack of planning residential zones in the vicinity of industrial corridors is the issue here. No roads, rail, air, or water ways would solve this problem designed. There should be a clear policy that should permit industries only if their exists residential land bank in the vicinity. Also, giving incentives to industries that encourage work from home for employees would be a smart approach to takle this traffic issue.

Most of the traffic issue are because of lack of knowledge on road planning. If you see the outer ring road the entry and exit from the service road is same. Who on the earth will design a road like this? Next is lane traffic. Even if you give a little space to the vehicle Infront the next lane guy will cut the lane and merge to here. And final thanks to the BMTC drivers who will focus on how to make a jam by stopping Infront of a exit lane or stopping on the main lane. To have a peace drive in city we have go for morning drive before 8 am Sunday.. After that its all challenging drive every time..

i think small changes to the rules will make a big difference 1. Any new house or building requires parking in the urban cities else no permission 2. Reconstruction of old government buildings which has few floors to make a parking place in the first few floors and office on top. this way we will have lot of parking place and money for the government. 3. roads near most of the junctions are not proper so vehicles go slow, this create extra layer of traffic. 4. create flyovers where ever possible to reduce the city traffic. these can be a game changer if implemented.
@AnirudhSrivatsa
@AnirudhSrivatsa 11 ай бұрын
I have a slightly different point of view. Significantly increasing parking facilities and adding lots of flyovers would only provide very short term relief, but would quickly become a much bigger traffic nightmare due to induced demand for more cars. We should reduce (and eventually, end) car dependency by significantly increasing mass public transit such as buses (Bangalore has very few buses compared to its population), dedicated bus lanes, Metro rail (which is in progress, but way too slowly), and even cycling lanes (which are actually a good option for travel within 5-7 km without luggage, which is a significant chunk of the daily urban commute currently being done by cars or cabs). In the long term, we should decentralize workspaces and residential areas and develop more mixed neighbourhoods with a mix of office and residential spaces so that lots of people aren't commuting towards large choke points. And of course, develop great satellite cities about 50-200 km away (Hosur and Mysuru, in Bengaluru's case).

What Gadgari said is absolutely right. Its not valid with respect to Bangalore, its with development of every city and towns. However you invest in projects on roads, highways, anywhere in India, its not going to ease and save the time of common people due traffic congestion. On the contrary, instead of investing so much money on infrastructure in the already congested place, there should be decentralisation of companies and commercial establishments coming up. These buildings and employment should be generated everywhere round the city than focussing on only one place. Then there should be this flexi timing introduced and enforced by every company Management and HR, be it big of small. Flexi timing is a great option so that employees travelling an hour early to work and leaving early from work can ease a lot of congestion. Plus ofcourse work from home concept, though should not be permanent, the employees can be given an option of 1 or 2 days work from home. Without all this, new infrastructures will only help the people a little. And people of Bangalore will keep on crying about he traffic. To easte conegestion, traffic distribution, no parking on the road and other small measures are a must.

Forget South even if North develops cities to the level to cater to the people of North, it will be great achievement and more than enough.
