@@NitpickingNerds that's also good, but shutting off life gain makes all of those effects that much more oppressive. It goes hand and hand with any incremental damage. It also reigns in games where you are trying to blow people out with a massive burn spell.

Esper Sentinel, Drannith Magistrate and maybe archeomancers map are the only ones I can think of that are even close and none of them combo off like those red cards can.

100% agree that Red is the weakest, I just built my first red deck, Inferno of the Star Mounts, and while the deck is extremely sick, it was a tough build. Once you get past Blasphemous Act, Chaos Warp, Vandelblast, and Tibalt's Trickery, removal is really rough. The toughest part is actual card advantage though, which is why I kinda disagree with your assessment of Wheel of Misfortune as it's the best wheel spell in red that doesn't cost a car payment. Not sure that budget should be considered, but Wheel's price is insane.

Well, I agree that all RL cards are way too expensive. But Wheel of Fortune is nowhere near the cost of a car payment. It actually came down below 200€ recently. I think you can get it for 170€ ~ 180€. I mean, it's a lot yes. But it's nowhere near the other best wheel of the format, Timetwister which sits at 5000€ (THAT's the price of a car). I'm talking about european prices. I know that american prices tend to be significantly higher but I don't know them (and they're generally at the same scale so it doesn't change the idea)

A bit of a Necro on this comment but I can assure you that mono red can be very good. A have a krenko mob boss deck and it's not uncommon for me to kill the entire table on turn 4 or 5. If I put another $200 or so in it I think it could be a tier 2 or 3 cedh decj

Here's how to make Curse of Opulence good: curse yourself! If they don't attack you, good! If they do, you get gold. I run it in any deck where I'm the threat just for playing a certain commander (like Purphoros).

Yeah but the player attacking you gets a treasure too, so they attack you get a treasure for nothing and you get a treasure that cost you a card and one mana. I'd have to get attacked a lot for that to be worth it I think.

Hellkite Tyrant is definitely getting up there with all the red treasure synergies recently. If you're in Rakdos, like in a Prosper deck, this may be a redundant Revel in Riches, and just one more must-kill in your deck, with a bonus that if you can attack with it, you're setting an opponent back significantly in some cases.

The issue with torbran is that the controllerof the affeceted damage source (you) doesn't actually get to choose how the replacement effect is applied but it is left up to the damaged permanent's controller or damaged player since they are considered the affected party. So torbran basically always just adds 2 unless you're rules lawyering.

Treasure nabber, brass bounty, treasure vault, gold span dragon, dockside extortionists make getting hellkyte to 20 artifacts isn't hard. Ivr won a few times with in when I've flashed it out just before my turn with 22 artifacts on my board

You guys gave Curse of Opulence a D-??? I have won many, many games because of an early Curse that doesn't get removed. There's almost always a player at the table who attacks a lot, or makes enough tokens to trade one for a gold each turn, and your opponents are usually greedy enough to attack for it even knowing you'll get the gold too. Not to mention it works super well in decks that care about sacrificing, like my Korvold deck, and it gets around Blind Obedience effects since you don't have to tap it. A fringe case for sure, but I've had it happen. I put this card in most of my red decks, I'd give it an A for sure.

I run a ton of damage multiplication in my bronze Purphoros build. Officially the way it works is the damaged player gets to decide how the effects are applied. So say Torbran and Gratuitous Violence are out, your opponents get to choose if its double then +2 or +2 then double. Its a shame but it is what it is, either way you're doing savage damage, its just never going to be optimal unless your opponents can't math. I'm 100% on Joe's side too. White is better than red in our format.

In one of my playgroup you cast curse of oppulance and even if you say no one attack him until he becomes a threat does not work. Everyone like treasure to much and says well if i don't attack x player as soon as someone else does and I am not in position to also benefited. I been at that table and they have 3 of these out sometimes.

Combustible Gearhulk is a bad card 99% of the time but it's one of my favorites in Rakdos Lord of Riots. You dome people for like 15-20 damage consistently, it's hilarious.

Red is still better than white. It's just has more depth as a colour even with whites recent pushed cards. Red is also generally more combo focused and has a lot more broken things going on. And red has had its fair share of powerful cards recently.

Red is the worst in Commander because half of its cards don't scale for the the 40 life and multiple players, it has expensive board wipes that are reliant on a fixed amount of damage, and has absolutely no recursion besides phoenixes.

I agree red is the worst color in commander. Red has the least mechanics/keywords. And direct burn is less important in high life total games than it is in 60 card formats. Which is one of the only things red does best.

Torbrann is actually worse than you think. Opponents choose the order of the replacement effects because the rule is the person being affected by the event orders the effects, so they'll always choose the best outcome.

This series is my absolute favorite! Absolutely amazing! Any tips on the best ways to give indestructible In Naya? Im building a janky enrage tribal deck thanks to the new recent support. Zealous Conscripts should get a few more points because unlike most treason effects you can steal any permanent with it. I've ultimated opponents Planeswalkers with it and totally changed the pace of the game.

I'm not sure if someone else has pointed it out, but Torbran does not work with damage doublers the way you suggested. It is true that someone chooses the order that the replacement effects apply in, but that person is the individual being dealt damage or the owner of the permanent that is being affected. This means that your opponent will pretty much always choose to double then add to minimize damage.

You also talk about Zealous Conscripts strictly as a threaten effect and compare it to other threatens, but the key difference is that it steals any permanent. You can ult their Planeswalkers, steal their Bolas' citadel. It doesn't make the card amazing but it adds more utility than implied.

Outpost Siege has actually replaced Phyrexian Arena in my Edgar Markhov deck. I like it, because it fills two roles, depending on what I need. It can be OK carddraw, but it can also win games when I go down the aristocrats route. Also, it turns sac outlets into removal without ever drawing attention, which is awesome. It might be my meta of course, but I feel like this always gets overlooked during thread assessment.

As usual, I love the videos. I have to whole heartedly disagree about red being the worst color. I just think red has less ubiquitous cards. Like dockside, jeskas will, the underworld escape card (forgot the name because I don't use it much). But Red has sooooo many good cards. However, theyre usually good cards (in my experience) that really enhance a strategy that where the foundation is found on other colors. As an imperfect off the top analogy, one or more of the other colors act as the car, while red adds the NOS. My take for the worst color though is.such a hot take its polarizing 😂 I love white too and don't think it deserves all the talk it gets for being bad. Even if you take the removal aspect away from white (which I don't enjoy, I'm not a fan of tons of cheap efficient removal in decks) it has lots and lots of great stuff in aggro, tokens, counters, and life gain strategies (where I personally tap into whites strengths).

Weirdly (and sadly) 2 damage modifiers (aka torbran + furnace of rath) works the way you said except for some reason the reciever / the controller of the reciever of each instance of damage picks the order. So generally your opponent will pick to double, then add 2

Zealous Conscripts was always one of the best creatures in my Marchesa the Black Rose deck. Comes in and steals a creature, has haste to immediately get itself and the creature a counter, sac both, get them both back, sac another thing. So good.

I don't know if I would say red is worse than white, but they are both definitely the weakest colors in magic, otherwise boros would not be considered the worst colored pair in edh by a far margin. Red can filter/loot/rummage through their deck, and use recursion better than white, but white has better ramp, and access to hatebears/stax. I dunno, feels like a wash to me. They both need some new tools.

And red is better with flashback, and still has underworld breach to hit everything else. So white's recursion just feels more niche/less useful than red's to me.

My Krarkashima deck is pretty light on good removal but abrade is pretty solid because I can copy it to remove a bigger creature then 3 toughness. Although I’ve been meaning to test out the AFR card that lets you look at your opponent’s library and play spells from there.

I feel like saying red is weakest is correct because you judge the color based on the entire card base, but in a 99 card deck I'm much more scared of a mono red deck than mono white deck any day of the week. I'd say it's correct to say it's weakest but that doesn't mean it should be viewed as the least threatening at a table? Not sure if that makes sense or not.

@@NitpickingNerds I watched the episode where you ranked the commanders from Strixhaven and you gave Galazeth Prismari a 4 for power. After making the deck and using it several times, in my humble opinion, it's much stronger than a 4 for power. Granted, if you're ranking power based on what Galazeth itself does (3/4 flier, make 1 treasure token) that's not that impressive, but holy moley his ability can take over a game by itself. Just some friendly patron feedback. Love ya!

For card diagnostics, no one beats this channel. I don’t always agree with their assessments, but they at least provide substantive arguments. I appreciate the pacing of their content as well. Joe is growing as a stand alone element and continuing to step outside of the lackey role he once appeared to have. Great video.

@@NitpickingNerds lol, you often see a broader use for a card, but you possess such a deferential attitude towards Beezy that it comes across as weak, which is possibly misleading. During an average video when you are discussing the strength or weakness of a card, you will glance at Beezy to gauge his reaction of what you are stating, this act puts Beezy in the position of power between you both. Watch some of your videos to see if I am mistaken. I have noticed a slight decline in this behavior as of late, which I applaud. I like both of you as content creators, I just wish you would step out of Beezy’s shadow more frequently. You have your own mind and need to trust your own judgement, you are rarely in error on your evaluations of cards. I would rather watch content you both created where I could hear strong arguments for or against the overall usefulness of a card, even if you guys were to disagree, as long as you both supported your arguments with logic and reason. The fact that you both seem to share a strong mutual friendship is what keeps me watching your content. I just think the content could reach greater heights if you did not seem to defer to Beezy’s judgement so often. That is just my perception of reality, take it for what it’s worth. As always you both put out great content, keep up the great work.
