This, my favourite guitar atm (murder me if you will) is my Yamaha EG012, literally my first electric, the neck just has something magical about it being unfinished and with an electronics change it sounds amazing! I just wish it would wear faster, but it doesn't cos its body is poly finished... I've still played it enough to get the start of some decent buckle rash on the back though!

I've got a 30 year old Japanese strat copy with a poly finish, that still looks almost as good as new. You'll be waiting a hundred years or more for that to wear through. Maybe you should try a nitro refin if that's what you're after. It also smells better.

The way i got it from a guitar tech: When poly was new, people applied it like nitro before. The result was a very thick finish that didn't sound as good as a nitro finish. But after a short time they realized if applied careful, a thin poly finish sounded as good as a nitro finish. Fast forward until today. Nitro today, because of environmental laws and stuff, is different from the old nitro. It will not crack or age as easily but is also less toxic. (Some nitro finishes today will not crack or get yellow at all, the warnings labels are just marketing.) So poly has a bad image from the transition time but isn't bad. And nitro today does not sound like "back then". It feels different and since nitro changes it can sound different. But better or worse is in fact a matter of every guitar. (And a matter of skillfully applied or not, like with poly "back then".)

I know this is old but I have to comment about polyurethane. I have built and finished custom cabinets and furniture for about 35 years. Polyurethane has ALWAYS been a better, more durable finish than ANY laquer finish. You can get into preferences and even tone but it is an absolute, objective fact that polyurethane is a tangibly better finish.

@@stricknine8623 right, compare a plywood box that holds my plates and glasses and whatever, to the wooden beauty that I hold in my hands for hours each day and literally have emotional responses to some the sounds I'm able to produce on it.
@stricknine8623
@stricknine8623 Жыл бұрын
@@simbadlemarin1815 I'm not comparing cabinets and furniture with a guitar. I only cited my experience with cabinets and furniture because it deals with wood and wood finishing and as to inform those who don't know any better that polyurethane is in fact a better finish than lacquer in every aspect of the job and purpose that a wood finish serves. Tangibly, that is. Preferences may still vary. Also,..custom cabinetry and furniture involves the repeated use of solid lumber. Cabinet doors and faceplates are solid lumber in most cases. In the Gun cases that I build,..solid oak, maple, basswood, popular,...ect., are all used. Also,...staining, sealing and finishing is the same process regardless of whether you are dealing with the veneer skin of plywood or solid lumber.

I must be either weird or not drinking the right kool aid, but I prefer the feel of poly. I was choosing between buying a new American Pro strat (satin poly neck) and a gold Original 50's for the exact same price (50's was on sale). Even though the allure of lacquer and vintage pickups made it a hard decision, I hated the feel of the nitro neck on that thing. So sticky you could hardly move your hand across it without taking almost all the pressure off first. The poly neck on the Pro with the satin finish glides like Teflon. Left with the full price American Pro and the gold Original 50s stayed hanging on the wall at $450 off retail.

So been a few years and I would say that Rob did this more from feel than from sound. I’ve taken a poly fender, completely stripped it down to bare wood and refinished it in nitro, it lost a quarter of a pound, felt like a different guitar but didn’t sound any different. I suspect that if they did this again with a third party playing and the two guessers just listening the result might change.

I like to "blinfold along" and I too heard a subtle brightness in the poly. Would that necessarily translate to a "better" guitar? No. Still cool that there is a discernible difference. In a shop trying both out I probably wouldn't catch on but with both guitars in isolation it was clear. People often forget, on electric guitars, that although it's a simple case of a string vibrating over a magnet the vibration of the string is influenced subtly or greatly by whatever it may be vibrating with or is held by.

I don't know about tone differences.. But Poly is like covering something in a layer of Plastic.. It's fully sealed. It hard to damage and cheap. Nitro is old tech that allows air to flow into the wood.. It's hard to apply, expensive and easy to damage. Advantages and disadvantages to both. Why do people still like oil paintings compared to acrylics.. Oil paint is a lot harder to use but to a lot of people it looks a lot better.

something I am seriously wondering: y'all tonewood wizards here, how comes that you insist on the impact of resonance of wood and even lacquer, but NOT pickguards? would not the material of the pickguard be far more important to the "absorbance" of frequencies than lacquer, since the surface directly beneath the strings is covered in it? Like... with the strings so close to the surface, that is literally the only surface the soundwaves are ever even capable of reaching and being reflected by it or absorbed by it. So... should not be the most neglected and probably cheapest part on any pickguard-fitted ST or T style guitar have a far greater influence than lacquer or even wood?

The big difference in tone for me was between the two players, and I only thought one of them sounded warm" and pleasant, with more sustain, smoother attack and more fullness.

I can definitely feel the difference between poly and nitro. I've always preferred the feel of the nitro guitars hence my love for Gibson. Wish other brands would offer more nitro. Let's be honest, the pickups made the sound difference here not the finish.

But on the site, the classic player (sunburst one) have poly finish on the body and urethane on the neck, not nitro...

Love this. Chappers supernatural powers again. Can you do another where you compare the effect of different material tone knobs on tone. Or the effect of hair dye? Maybe near the beginning of April...?

Nitro and Poly sound basically identical, the just feel different. It’s kind of the same thing as with rosewood vs maple fretboards (they sound a little different, but the difference is minimal)

I don't care about tonewood or lacquer but these two sound 100% brighter than sunburst two. Just make sure your monitoring doesn't compensate sharpness with bottom end. Use very bright and thin sounding monitors/headphones or phone speaker with pronunced upper mid range. Or cut everything bellow 800 on EQ on your audio interface. My Adam A7x, Alesis, Neumann KH120, Dynaudio Lyd7 moniotrs and senheisser HD800. All of them show that those two are sharper.

Same. I can't tell what makes the difference, but I can definitely hear it. (planar headphones, ar-h1 and objective2 dac-amp),

Same sound difference here through my Beyerdynamics A20, Emotiva Big Ego and Beyerdynamics Amiron Home phones. Although less of a difference to my old ears in the freq. comparison at the end. Being the nitro is over a poly base I wonder if it's just the extra layers of paint that makes the difference. When I build a guitar I use nitro because it's easier to use and repair. Neck to body fit is important to me when assembling a guitar. I find it has an impact on sustain.

A true test should include only one variable to be tested and everything else identical. You would need to play the nitro and record it. Then strip the nitro and finish it in poly (same thickness). Then reassemble and record. I tend to believe subtle differences can be contributed to more than one variable and the rest comes down to perceived tone and feel.

its not about hearing as much as feeling and even smelling. its not that hard to feel the difference while holding a guitar in your own hands, since most poly lacquers are cheaper and feel quite thick while nitro has a far more "woody", some say textile, feel to it.

Hearing it over YT is tough. I can hear a pretty big difference in these, but I'd have to concentrate to get it right. I doubt I could do it if they played with a band or over a track. I think more people would get it right live. I always have a different experience when I go from YT research to trying stuff out myself live. One example is the new and old mexican strats. The new ones sound great to me on YT, but I didn't like them in person.

I get the different feeling on the neck, but soundwise how can you know that is some slight variation in the pickup, wood, building or just human variation in picking? The only scientific experiment would be to find a way to exclude every possible factor to isolate the finish, but that's impossible because no instruments is the same exact copy of an other one.

BLINDFOLD CHALLANGE IDEA: what about putting squire pickups and controls in a fender and fender pickups and controls in squire. Or epiphone and Gibson. Will a well crafted guitar still sound good with less expensive guts. And Visa versa... food for thought
