22:08 Something interesting to add here- the Lorem Ipsum passage is a placeholder equivalent used in text parsing in all sorts of things. It's basically gibberish, it doesn't really mean anything, but it is rooted in a latin phrase used in a philosophy text from Cicero. The reason why I bring this is is because it might relate to the themes of the game. Spoilers, obviously. The phrase is from “Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit, sed quia non numquam eius modi tempora incidunt ut labore et dolore magnam aliquam quaerat voluptatem.” Translating to: “Nor is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure.” Essentially saying that while no one actively searches for pain or trauma, it is because of that pain that some people can become stronger, and from that obtain immense satisfaction and catharsis. Essentially, what happened with Young in the original game according to your interpretation. As for the stuff with Nora, i'm not entirely sure how to interpret it. A more positive interpretation is that the game seems to be much more about helping others to gain actualization (i.e Nova helping Zera by removing her seed, the whole thing with shrinking down and cleaning Dust, etc.), which is possibly being taught to Nora in the real world. Her problem seems to be less "interacting with others is painful" like Young, and more "I do not see the worth in others or my own life". This is the dark side of lacking a meaningful purpose, while some can handle being utterly directionless and the universe having no purpose others cannot, and need to shoulder meaningful responsibility in order to make their lives have purpose. I think that the world of Anodyne 2 acts as a sort of purpose-giver for Nora, who is embodied through Nova. The ending where the Anodyne fires and the world is wiped out is her completing her "given" purpose, while the one where she chooses to rebel and save the world, having found the value in others and herself in interacting with them, is her asserting her new purpose as an individual. This is mostly what I read into with my own playthrough of the game, and i'd love to hear what others think.

I thought that the Metacoins were meant to be a distraction for Nova and forget about what happened in Dustbound Village. That’s why the coins are placed everywhere and even in spots that are easily accessible. It’s so that Nova or the player will see them and pick them up instead of thinking about what is right and have an incentive in continuing their quest and achieving the Anodyne

instant gratification coins
@Cure_Hana3 жыл бұрын
I think it also ties into C. Visionary’s “Just Get it Done” mentality, basically giving Nova as many convenient resources as possible so that she can prepare Anodyne without any distractions; especially with the card tracker showing you exactly where you need to go to find more levels. This contracts greatly with Palisade, who actively encouraged Nova to explore the world around her, interact with other people for hints, take breaks, and figure out problems for herself.

The shadows might be one of the things that pushes it to looking a little more Dreamcast like, and the edges of the models aren't as jagged as a PS1 game. Still the aesthetic overall definitely screams the late 90s to early 00s in some degree. Another great game with that type of purposely retro 3D look is Dusk, an FPS that's on PC now and coming to Switch later which resembles a game running on the Quake engine. It's interesting to me how we're now at a point where purposely low poly and low res looking games are starting to become the new "faux retro" look that indies are using, IIRC even Yacht Club said they eventually want to make a "Shovel Knight 64" which looks and plays like an N64 3D platformer (they're still working on the final DLC for Shovel Knight at the moment, and said that before they tackle a 3D game they want to do a "Super Shovel Knight" first which looks and plays like a 16-bit game).

I think the cool thing about life is that it's capable of bringing forth a life form that can ponder upon the "meaning" of everything, to find "value" and "purpose" from where there might be none. Capable of forming perspectives that can view reality in all sorts of different ways. I think that's what gives life its value: the capability to define itself. Who said Nihilism is inherently negative? If nothing has any meaning, then that means you're free to find your own meaning in everything, to decide things for yourself instead of having someone else dictate for you how you're supposed to think and see things. None of that means anything either, so you're free to dismiss viewpoints, but to also care for them, care for the innately arbitrary things in life we observe and create. Lack of meaning is pretty liberating. Yes, I'm a big dork for philosophy and existential stuff. Feel free to ignore my ramblings.

I found a really cool out-of-bounds glitch in Center Sanctuary (where you don't normally have access to Ridescale). If you talk to the platform where you upgrade the Dust Prism with cards, press Left on the left stick, and press the Jump button to advance the dialogue box, you'll float into the air infinitely until you close the second dialogue box. Sometimes you get stuck along the wall of the room, but if you have the right angle then you can float through the roof of the Center Sanctuary. You can find a copy of the Center Sanctuary that's used for one of the endings of the game, as well as this really weird OoB structure that you can only see a part of from the Elevator. It fully has collision so you can walk on it. Very cool.

I wonder if Anodyne is a representation of creative people in their 20s or 30s who are still unsure what they should with their futures and wanting to share their creative thinking and understanding in the real world though don't know they can have it come across. Which due to anxiety, long terms of solitude and little to no interaction with others, the individuals would begin start creating extreme complex of characters, lore, meanings, outcomes, their own self insertion and worlds compressed from the mix of the hivemind of the shared web and the individual's own subconscious mind. For example, it's if you are given a problem in a math book with a setting towards it thay you would have solve. However instead of finding the answer you would proceed by questioning the problem which would create another problem within the problem. Then repeat that process over and over and over again creating an invite problem that can never have a solved, only uncertainty. That's why creative individuals have a problem of trying to interpreted their thought process completely in the real world as it is in their subconscious, they just haven't found their solution to their explanation. It is something I'm completely plagued me for 8 years with at the age of 21. I'm uncertain of what my future is or even if I have a future. I'm uncertain on how I should interact with others familiar or not. I'm uncertain how I can fully convey what I perceive, what I felt, what I thought into physical being to share with others. It all leads back to uncertainty, but I hope that uncertainty will become a possibility maybe even a absolute certainty to the most difficult personal questions and problems to finally be answered so I can show that to the physical world.

Spoilers I’ve read a lot of good theories and thoughts on the Nora segment, and I’m not sure if anyone else has said something like this, but: My personal take on the Nora segment, is that Nora being the real person represented through Nova indicates that Nora hasn’t actually failed to face her fears and anxieties that are holding her back on living her life. If New Theland is like The Land was for Yung in the first Anodyne, that is being an imaginary world meant to act as an escape from their problems and the stifling nature of the real world, then Nova breaking free of her shackles and carving out a life for herself where she makes her own decisions and learns from her own mistakes is a way for Nora to work through her anxiety and/or depression. The gargoyle representing these issues chasing Nora, and her retreating to a safe place is actually the events that happened before the game starts, and Nova was born to help Nora cope. But the fact that Nova succeeded in winning her independence means that the ending is happy for Nora too, because it gives hope that Nora will be able to find fulfillment and will be able to live with the things that have set her back in the past without buckling under the pressure of them. There’s hope that she can truly live, not just survive, in spite of the obstacles life throws her way. That’s just my theory and personal takeaway, though.

What an ambitious sequel. It sounds like they took some of the creative ideas from the first game and ran with them.

I find it interesting, I found you over the last few days. Really cool channel. Your views per video are almost equivalent to the number of subscribers you have, you got a new one here btw, which is incredible. That means you have very good retention and I would hazard to guess most viewers are subscribers. That being said, the quality of these videos and the amount of work you put into them is incredible and makes me wonder why your sub count is so low.

Bought the game on Switch on its launch. Just finished it. Sorry for watching this video so late. I wanted to go in blind. And thanks for the heads up on both this game and the first. Great experiences.

i'm getting some serious PS2 vibes from this, much more so than PS1. going from anodyne 1 to 2 feels like as big of a leap as the one from ps1 to ps2 did, too. and that title screen. gorgeous!

Okay, the existential and philosophical waxings in this video tells me you NEED to play NieR:Automata if you haven't already. Seriously, it is ALL about that and it's such an amazing game.

Since watching the start of this video I was intrigued about these anodyne games, so I saved some money and played both of them. Dude! Both games are great but anodyne 2 knocked it out of the park. Just got to the endgame and it's great to see the way the game handles it. Can't wait to see if anodyne continues as a franchise. And man, I hope we ever get some insight on what that desertnpc thing was

4:12 Yes, this is good. This is exactly why, if I wanted to add controller support to one of my games, I would draw all 4 Face Buttons and highlight the one you should press, just like the Nintendo Switch does in certain configurations. This would not only support XBox and PlayStation controllers, but also Nintendo controllers where the face buttons are mirrored compared to on the XBox controller.
