The reason 100% completion being hard is such a common complaint is that breaking every crate in a crash level was something the original games expected or at least encouraged you to do. If crates were off screen there would generally be some kind of hint towards that, and if you missed a few the stages were short enough that a repeat visit and some intentional deaths wouldn't feel like work. A lot of crates in Crash 4 are just obscured by the scenery with no clever hints, the only way you'll find them is by exploring every nook and cranny in an obstacle course style game that constantly pushes you forward. It's ultimately not a deal breaker because Crash 4 pushes its challenge just through crazy and tough level design more so than possibly any other game in the series, but I think it would have been better to just drop the crate gems at this point and stick to the wumpa collection tiers as an incentive to break as many crates as possible but still allow the player some leeway. Then those most obscure crates could just be something to pad out your wumpa tally, so that if you missed some in a more hectic section of the level you could potentially make up the difference needed through careful combing of more relaxed parts.
@baalfgames53184 жыл бұрын
Part of me kind of hope that Toys for Bob will update the games and cut down a lot of padding, if that is possible.

The original games (or at least 2, 3, and Wrath of Cortex) also locked their endings behind 100% completion. 4 at least gives you a conclusion to the story if you didn't go out of your way to do the harder challenges, instead you get a Crash 1-style joke "where are they now" montage and a teaser for Crash 5 for getting 106%.
@RobotScarlet2 жыл бұрын
In the earlier levels, there’s one crate I just can’t get because it’s so high up AND I only even know about it from a Caddicarus video where he pointed it out. I would’ve never guessed it was there, and I looked all over. Crash 4 can be as hard as it wants, I welcome it as a casual Crash player and I loved the game through and through, but some of the box placements are unfair.

Many of the more open ended collectathon platformers like Banjo and Spyro barely had any actual platforming because the level design was designed around exploration rather than obstacle course gauntlets and when they did try to have platforming it felt out of place and rather clunky. Mario 64's more platforming intensive moments namely the Bowser levels were very linear in design, because in the usual sandbox levels the acrobatic stunts you pull off were more for taking shortcuts than needing to do platforming. Linear level design allows the platforming to be more efficient because it allows the obstacles to flow better, it's all a matter of having good proper level design that makes the levels fun to traverse despite only having one route and Crash understood that well. The area where the old games did fumble was that the levels were literal hallways and it did feel very cramped, this was easier to notice in the remake. Crash 4 solves that by making levels more expansive, they're still completely linear but they don't feel like hallways at all.

The whole segment about 100%-ing a game really changed my views on video games. I'm the person who always wanted to 100% a game no matter how infuriating or tedious it was. This would cause me to either hate a good game because getting 100% wasn't fun for me, or I would not 100% a game that I just couldn't bring myself to complete and end up feeling like a failure. Looking at a lot of games now with the perspective of doing things at one's preferred challenge level and pace really showed me what video games are about. They're meant to provide an enjoyable experience for a wide variety of people. One game might not be so hard to 100% while another one is extremely difficult to 100%. You don't have to fully complete both. You're responsible for your own experience, and that's a philosophy that more gamers (like myself) need to understand. Hell, I knew nothing about Spyro when the Skylanders craze first started. I thought he was just another character. When it came to Crash Bandicoot, I always saw it as “that platform RT series that was on the PS1 that people loved and some racing games”. When I started looking more into it as the years went on, I started to see why people liked it. An evolution of the simpler platformers when everyone else was trying to make theirs more open. And now, looking at Crash 4, I’m honestly excited. I’m currently saving up for a PS5, so once I get it, I’m totally playing Crash 4. The animations especially stand out. Good lord, it looks like you’re playing an animated movie. What’s even more impressive is that it’s all in-engine as far as I can tell. I think a big thing about Crash is that instead of going for overwhelming innovation, it attempted to use overarching 2D and linear design to really emphasize and feature the 3D mechanics in thoughtful contexts. Instead of trying to do a LOT, it did what it did WELL. Not saying others didn't, but I never saw Crash as dated design, it was always it's own game to me (and probably my personal favorite). Though, the responsiveness of the controls and contextual level design in 2 and 3 truly was second to none for me, and that was a huge part of my immersion. I always loved Crash since I was a kid, and I couldn't be happier to see what Toys for Bob did with Crash 4. They had a lot of creativity and cleverness and understood the nods to a natural progression through the game, introducing simple ideas and building on them with increasing complexity, striking a great balance that brought me a lot of enjoyment and even laughter purely from the design. I got my 106% and got 32 developer relics I NEVER thought I'd go for, and I look forward to claiming the remaining relics in the near future! It was a heck of a road, but by the time each task was completed, I was practiced enough that the next was in sight.

I have to give you extra props about the 100% talk and Difficult = Not Enjoyable talk. This is exactly what I wish more people thought about. Personally, I never really grew up with the original trilogy. I've only ever known Crash through CTR and Crash Bash. So, when I decided to play the N Sane Trilogy, of course I was dying left and right and it took a heck load of time. But just from slowly and patiently going through it all, I fell in love with Crash the platformer. Same with Crash 4 being way harder than the original trilogy. I was determined to 100% it and I did it. On the other hand, I know myself that time relics don't really suit me so I don't really bother. Or the fact that I know I will not enjoy trying to perfect Bears Repeating so I didn't bother about 106%. It is the player's choice to play a game. I have so much respect for you being a newcomer to Crash who did not just shove the game aside because it was difficult. 😁

Man. After watching Caddy's feature film complaining about 100%ing this game, it's refreshing to see a more grey take on completing games. It's probably the YT game reviewers mentality to -complete the game for the sake of documenting it (Something that Nitro Rad has done in the past). But the fun of a good game is that you can play however you want. After all, Crash 4 could potentially be someone's first game that they grew up with, like NR with Sonic Adventure 2. Thanks James! This right here. Crash has historically been about the post game and when that's botched then more than 50% of the game doesn't sit well with fans. There's a difference between a fun challenge and masochistic torture. Even everyone who likes the game and plays it casually agrees that the post-game is condensed bullshit to its core, and that's not something you can just ignore.

@ricardoquerubin39624 жыл бұрын
I think the thing that pushes the mentality that you have to get (mostly) everything in the game is that they locked secret/bonus endings behind them. I watched Caddy's video on Crash 4 and there were some things he said he wasn't gonna do (like the dev time trials) cause they don't do anything substantial.

Appreciated your take on 106% completion. As a Crash fan I think this is a great game. I ran through it and earned most of the gems but found myself perfectly content to stop a long way away from even 100% completion because I felt I had got my money's worth and then some. What's great though is that all of those challenges are still there so when I do want to pick the game up again, there's still plenty of challenges for me to try and tackle. A lot of people seem to want to pick up a game and fulfil completionist requirements in a weekend. If you tackle Crash 4 like that you're likely to get burnt out.

Crash 1-3 encouraged 100% for a more complete ending. Crash 4 on the other hand has multiple endings and so much locked behind the extra stuff (on top of being monontonous and difficult, making the completionist route too demanding as well as taking away focus from the casual experience. Crash 1-3 never had the 100% route outmatch the casual
