What's awesome about Howard Wright is that he's voiced by Yuri Lowenthal, an American who can speak Japanese flawlessly and with a proper accent, thanks to his time studying in Osaka. But he's an amazing actor because he often gets called in for roles involving flubbed pronounciations of Japanese, or overly-affected Japanese accents. See Wonder White in Wonderful 101 for an example of the latter. He's just a really good VA, okay?

The nurse isn't just a "random nurse", that's Yukie, and there's actually quite a bit about her backstory (and Seiga) throught the game, but mostly through texts and clues instead of straight foward cutscenes. So yeah, she isn't just a slap on character like Homecoming's were, not by a long shot.
@cheridoubidou8 жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly! She's actually the main motivation for Seigo to carry on in this world. Also, I think Nitro was a bit unfair with the new sightjacking mechanics. I mean, yes, the game takes a dip in performances, but it's really not unplayable and they added some very cool ideas. The fact that you can keep up to three shibito visions on screen at the same time as you're playing, allowing you to keep playing while always keeping an eye on where your enemies are is actually pretty neat and allows for a much smoother and enjoyable stealth, in my opinion. Also, while it's true that some levels are pretty much the same as in the first game, it's worth noticing that some changes were made and a lot of times for the better. For example, the mission where you have to escape the abandoned house with Miyako is better in Blood Curse: you have more things to do to be able to get out and there are some really unsettling parts, like when you have to go through the sick boy's room. And finally, Blood Curse manages to be a lot more clear regarding the primary and secondary objectives. I get that one can find it to be too simple to understand but, really, in the first game, sometimes you were doing stuff and you had absolutely no idea why you were doing it :D The frozen towel is a good example: when I was doing it, I was like "why am I putting this towel in this refrigerator? It makes no sense!" and when I got the answer, I was like "Oh... alright, that's silly..." :P I think Siren 2 is the best in the series and I love the first Siren, but I find Blood Curse to be the most enjoyable to play. I guess Nitro got a bit burnt on the series, having played the three games in a raw, and that's why he didn't really pay attention to Yukie's backstory or the new sightjacking mechanics, but he did a great job on this marathon, I really enjoyed it!
@NitroRad8 жыл бұрын
If that's the case then it definitely wasn't conveyed very well at all. In the first game I knew exactly who Mina was, I knew exactly how she was connected to the other characters, and I didn't need to read any optional material to figure that out. She's also front and center, being shown off one of the first cutscenes without any context as to why she's nowhere near a hospital. There's no way they would have introduced the character in such a random, situation-less way unless they were trying propagate that they have characters similar to that of Silent Hill.
@NitroRad8 жыл бұрын
Anther point, the iconic shibito from Siren 1 was the police officer. You encountered him a BUNCH of times throughout the game. They completely ditched that here in favor of the nurse, and there's no way you can tell me they didn't do that to compete with Silent Hill.
@cheridoubidou8 жыл бұрын
That's true. If I remember correctly, the Yukie story is only conveyed through some archives, so you can easily miss it. Blood Curse actually rely a lot more on the archives to tell its story than the first two games (even though they did it too). You really have to get all the archives and take the time to examine all of them to get what's going on^^ I don't know how I feel about that: I liked to piece everything together to understand, but, on the other end, I think the game can be really confusing the first time you play through, much more than the first Siren. I don't know if it was to have a similar character like Silent Hill, I mean, the presence of Yukie makes sense in the story and I don't see Toyama wanting to compete with the franchise he created (although I might be wrong), but it's true that the way Yukie is introduced is just to show off and having her breakdancing and laughing in the middle of the woods is kind of random :D
@91Turles8 жыл бұрын
I don't belive that at all. Toyama was never one to follow "trends" and I really dont see him caring much about competing with Silent Hill, a title that not only he created himself but also one that by 2008 was already shit and in the mud pretty much. Claiming a title is competing with Silent Hill just because it has a nurse in it seems silly to me.

"It's like the cast of a bad horror movie." It's funny because they're suppose to be in a movie.
AHHHHHHH It's fully first person. You could project either both eyes or just one to keep moving around. There's some huge possible design issues. Sight jacking could lead to dizziness as the displayed image wouldn't match your movements, and making it first person would be a great opportunity to let you have better interactivity with the world but combat would devolve into waggling your arms in the direction of Shibito. If anyone could crack the proper mechanics it'd be a lot of fun imo

It probably wouldn't even be that hard to impliment. Just have one eye show a different image than the usual image relative to the player's head view. When you think about it in a certain context, New translation kinda did things perfectly; Almost every time there's a western remake of something, they always lose sight of what made the original good. You get english speaking characters that're usually obnoxious & annoying, and the mindset that special effects do all the work for them, as well as other problems. This game pretty much has everything a western remake is guilty of, at least as far as the visual medium goes. But the fact it was done by Project Siren means it's got a lot more heart than most other remakes. That doesn't excuse things like the sightjack being so clunky, but I can certainly forgive it for the fact that it tried & for all it's faults, isn't just a cashgrab. That & the visuals are so good & atmospheric. Also, you wanna see this formula actually get butchered? Try watching the film... And then try to make sense of it, even in the context of Forbidden Siren 1 & 2.

I like the idea of a bunch of Americans being caught up in some crazy paranormal shit during their time visiting Japan. It's definitely a concept with potential. This game, though... There are two distinct takes present here, and they clash so badly it's hard to take the game seriously. *×* An American exchange student gets caught up in the aftereffects of paranormal rituals while exploring a small village, and then has to figure out how to escape alive. *×* An American film crew goes somewhere they shouldn't, witnesses a cult ritual, and they then have to try and escape while dealing with the paranormal. There is no guarantee that all of them will survive. Pick one. You cannot combine both into one story.
@derrickhaggard Жыл бұрын
If I had to pick one I would've went with Howard's storyline not only did I like him more then the film crew, but unlike the film crew the Japanese characters encountered wouldn't have to switch to American-English to communicate with Howard as due to being an international student at a international school located in Japan(made even more believable due to the fact the VA for Howard Yuri Lowenthal actually went to school in Osaka Japan)can actually speak fluent Japanese meaning he can understand the people in the town perfect and we can get these cool moments where Howard speaks his birth country's language American-English during sections mostly sections where he's surmising the situation to himself and speaking the occasional Japanese with an American accent mostly when he's talking to another person for those scenes and scenes when he has to translate a sign leading to a location or a newspaper, or note to figure out more of the lore that isn't told straight out. Plus his storyline of accidentally getting caught up in this due to rescuing Mikama from being a sacrifice in the cult's ritual during his exploration probably for a project on local myths, legends, folklore, and culture because he was a genuine good-hearted individual(Again this good-hearted heroic nature is shown when he actively goes to get help for a injured woman instead of abandoning her)and now has to figure out how to get both of them to survive and inadvertently end the curse since he got accidentally caught up in this due to wanting to do the right thing and save Mikama from a situation where she was in his eyes was going to be brutally murdered, so because he wanted to save Mikama he now has to get both of them out alive and end the curse, is a better storyline with the potential of great character development and is a plot that can be stomached more easily then the cliche plot of American film crew gets caught up in the paranormal stuff due to accidentally stumbling upon the ritual murder of the nurse.

This reminds me, remember Playstation Home? Those big online community hubs for the PS3 that had games all over the place and you could travel to different worlds. Well, there happened to be one based on Siren Blood Curse. It was setup like a horror attraction at an amusement park. In this case, it was based around the hospital, I think, where everyone waited around the lobby to get a turn in the attraction (I remember a lot of people gathering around this hub). It was a mini game where you and I think three other people had to navigate narrow corridors to try and stealth your way from point A to B without getting caught by one of the wandering Shibito. One thing I hated about this game is that the developers tried to represent each and every single character in the original game - the scene where Amana burns Howard was only there to reenact the scene where Hisako burned Ayako, and the showdown between Howard and Seigo before fighting Kaiko was completely pointless in terms of story, and was only there to reenact the fight between Kyoya and Jun. Even the part where the an orange void swallows the characters and they go back in time is there to replace the secondary objective thing from the original game... The developers have OCD i guess

What's interesting is the voice actor that plays Howard Right, Yuri lowenthal, lived in Japan for a period of time when he was young and and speaks a bit of Japanese due to going to school there for a bit of time. It always made me think maybe that's why they picked him to voice Howard.

This game is extremely creepy. I cannot believe it didn't catch on in the US. Even now with people talking about horror games. Probably because it was Digital only in the West
@snnnaaaaaakeeeee4470 Жыл бұрын
It actually got a physical release in Europe. Only America was digital only

Yeah I bought a used physical copy of Siren: Blood Curse for my old PS3 from a local used game store that actually had a copy and it costed around 50 to 60 bucks way higher than most used PS3 games.

16:05 She actually does have a relevant role if you read the diaries and stuff. Her name is Yukie, and she was in love with Seigo. She was the first to be sacrificed at the beginning of the game. She was a very sweet nurse who felt sorry for Seigo, and tried to do kind things for him like make him food at work because she could tell his adoptive parents didn't treat him very well. (He grew up in the cult and was abused, not wanting to be apart of it) There's a sad scene when she approaches him, she says, "Doctor" as a Shibito, but with a gentle demeanor, like she wanted him to hold her because she was scared, and he shoots her. As she falls she sobs. He then shoots himself. They always come back from the dead, but that scene always made me feel bad for her.

Fun fact, the actor playing as Saiga Seigo doesnt speak english aside from a few words so all of his lines were spoken to him phonetically and he would then repeat it. As a result, his emotion is off in some scenes but it certainly does add a creepy off putting vibe to the character.

*I miss this series from 2003 - 2008, it was underappreciated back in the old days. I would like to see it get revived by the former members of Team Silent, creators of Silent Hill 1... have another sequel being made as Siren 2: New Translation instead of calling it Siren 2: Blood Curse as the title doesn't make sense for the second game. I see it's more a reboot / re-imagining of the original rather than a proper remake.* *It had three major game titles, a loose film adaptation, three manga adaptations one of them is cancelled / unfinished, two Siren Maniacs which are the official guide complete analysis handbooks and a official art book for the second game.* *Forbidden Siren (2003 / 2004, PS2)* *Forbidden Siren 2 (2006, PS2, PAL Version, EU & JP Only)* *Siren: Blood Curse (2008, PS3 / PSN, "New Translation")* *Forbidden Siren (2006 Film)* *Siren: Eternal Siren* *Siren: Call Of The Red Sea* *Siren ReBIRTH* *Siren Maniacs* *Siren 2 Maniacs* *Siren 2 Official Art Book*

It REALLY sounds like him (Yuri Lowenthal is the voice actor in question). I thought it was him as well, so I looked it up, and it's a different guy. I guess he just sounds similar.

Fun tinbit. If you noticed that Howard's Japanese pronunciation is actually pretty good (at least for an American kid), that's because Yuri Lowenthal is fluent.

The reason why I never got into the series earlier is because of Blood Curse. The performance was so bad I didn't consider it playable. After playing the original though Siren 1 is now one of my favorite horror games.

The sight jacking can be tuned to having 3 people on one side. This was in the options menu in the advance settings. Also, the story was convoluted since the story was all about time traveling. The archives explain this also, in the websites you have to go on your computer.

"I say stick with the original. You will need a walkthrough but.." Yeah...no thanks dude. Even if this one is flawed and too linear, I'd rather take this than a game with BS cryptic puzzles that make you HAVE to read a walkthrough to beat them.

Exactly. Any game that is so confusing that it basically either forces me to spend days on it or looking up a walkthrough, I pass on. Unless it's specifically a puzzle game.
