LOL, my brother bought a 1970 Buick Skylark GS 455 for $2200 in 1984. It was junky with 134,000 miles and had at least one collapsed lifter. When he bought it, it was slow AF wit a 2.93 open diff and the secondaries in a Quadrajet that were not opening. Getting the Q-jet to work right was easy but once he did that it was a peg leg burnout hero. He bought a 3.36 posi rear rear for $200 and a set of Pro-Track L-60-15s and slapped them in and all of a sudden it was winning at the local street race spot where we lived. . It was running mid 13s by the stopwatch which at the time was respectful but not a top dog. He also had a 64 Pontiac LeMans With an L-78, 375 horse big block Chevy with a bigger cam and a single plane Eddy intake that was running high 11s by the stopwatch. Everyone wanted to race his Pontiac but his rule was in order to run against his LeMans they had to beat his Buick first. Only a handful of cars made it past the Buick to race his LeMans. All of these races took place on the Rt 40 connector in Hamden Connecticut and it was on a slight upgrade with crappy traction. God I miss those days.

Try the GS 107. Window rattler cam. I ran that cam in my old Buick. They told me it was the biggest cam I could run with the stock pistons. They told me their 455 with stage 1 cast iron heads. TA performance single plane high rise intake and the same headers you have. Made 520 hp. And that their stage 1 heads were about 25 hp over my plain 1970 350hp engine stock heads. I know that was one hell of a great sounding engine and when the cam started making power at about 3300 rpms. It felt like I was hitting with a 100 shot. Your really making me miss my old skylark. Can't wait for more on this engine. Also. I ran a draw thru turbo on mine at one time. Holy crap it made some power.

Been missing mine too. Had a 72skylark and a 70 in my early 20's. 46 now. The 70 was super sweet, white leather, power everything- even lumbar type airseats. Little windows in the back even had electric motors on them. Anywho, both were just the 350models. My 70 though had a rv cam in it. With a little edlebrock 600 that sucker would move down the highway. Nothing like shifting into 2nd at 65 to 70 mph lol. Now my toy is a clapped 84 camaro - 355 - 350tranny((slightly built)) 373 stock rear end - and of course a little Weiand 142 with a holley 750. It gets it real nice,,, but miss my gold 1970 Skylark everyday.

I remember an article years ago. I think in car craft, but it may have been hot rod. that Buick at one time took a nail head engine, and ran a turbo setup on it, but since the valves were small, they ran it backwards. Blow thru the exhaust side, and out the intake. they didn't have problem getting air in. but needed the bigger intake valves to get that air out. if I remember right. it made somewere in the 800hp range.

Some more Flint Buick stories. My best buddy from HS bought his bosses speed shop after he came back from Vietnam. In the late 1970's he became one of the first to offer NOS kits. We put a set on a boat tail Rivera (huge car) and ran a chain for a travel limiter on the left front. Put slicks on it and it would pull the left front tire. Next thing we know Buick engineers came over to get a kit to play around with. Never heard what they did with it but that Rivvy was a terror on the street.

I can’t like it when I love it!! Any power gains Or losses that occur when operating rich of stoichometric are purely due to minor heat changes from the difference in fuel. You can’t burn anymore fuel than you had air for so it’s just I burned fuel going out the exhaust. So while fuel rich is super wasteful it won’t hurt power much.

Hello I've enjoyed this Series immensely I had some suggestions for future videos. Please keep talking about and showing the afr and timing aspects you are iterating to achieve the results. I would love to see a video where you took a holley efi managed engine LS3 or such give it the normal tune. Then without changing parts look at advanced tuning such as injection timing, individual cylinder timing, individual afr. I would love if one cylinder is detonating first and the remaining can take a few more degrees advance. It would be cool to know whats left on the table from a normal tune. Second idea to take an engine and see how to maximize the torque value regardless of engine speed. Cyrus

The air/fuel is something I noticed too. I have tuned on it and not much change. I thought I was doing something wrong. At the time I had simple edelbrock carb it and it was tuned pretty good. I went to a guy who specializes in edelbrock and carter AFB carbs. He went to adjust the idle screws and he was amazed how rich they were set.... how can it run? So he reset them to "stock" and it ran like garbage so he started adjusting... ended up as rich as I had. I think the buick 455 is pretty near optimal for below 5000 rpm. You can spin it much faster due to bearing speeds. Increasing flow by cam helps some but other improvements to flow are less effective because the factory choices are sufficient. I think the magic will happen by forced induction! Max RPM of 5500 and all the boost in the world crammed in there. The bottom end is HUGE so it will take it. The thin wall block castings might be dodgy but I always feel that RPM kills motors not power. Add MUCH BOOST!
@jaydunbar75384 жыл бұрын
Rpm not power? Well rpm and power are directly related, (rpm*torque)/5252=HP. Higher torque allows for higher HP at a lower rpm. higher rpm allows for a higher hp while maintaining a lower maximum torque. Higher torque requires a heavier rotating assembly, higher rpm benefits from a lighter rotating assembly. Either way if you over rev a big heavy engine, or if you dump in to much fuel at a low rpm in a small light engine the tuner is destroying it, not the rpm or the torque.

"5252 rpm" is the target I use when considering a naturally aspirated engine build. For dead rock reliable, most torque and fuel mileage. Peak torque 3-3500 rpm and peak hp 5200rpm. Street, strip and still able to drive on the street. Peak torque 4500rpm and peak hp 6500rpm. Above that it's pure race. This rule does not apply to any kind of forced induction.

Saw Car Craft test a Junkyard Pontiac 455 from a mid 70s car in the mid 2000s. The cam was so small in the Pontiac it gained almost nothing from a performer rpm intake and headers. Then they swapped the cam. Gained like 70 hp from a XE274 grind. Went back and put the manifolds on and the power dropped like a rock. The factory cam was the choke point on that Pontiac 455. Can you do a rebuild gains episode? Any worn out junkyard engine that runs. New rings bearings, oil etc. Bore plain, otherwise stock etc. Can you gain 5, 10, 20 hp just by freshening up an engine?

I've gained 0 hp on a rebuild before-not cool

What are the mufflers on that motor ??? Love the impromptu motor rev sound you made for it. It reminded me of when I would play on the floor with my match box cars. Keep on keeping it real !!!!! 👍🏻
