When you add a big efficient motor AND big amounts of boost what you get is my grudge motor lol. 👍 Never had this particular setup on an engine dyno but based on chassis #’s and trap speed I can tell you first hand the big inch LS engines built right with even moderately sized turbos will make in the 2000 range while remaining streetable. I’m sure even a lot more than that is possible with what I would consider large turbos and maybe even more displacement. You don’t always need a big block though that’s for sure.

I'm all about displacement. Having had both BB and boosted dailys & pickups is how I base that. It takes next to no money to go past 600lbs of torque and still drive like stock on midgrade pump gas. The pull is there right off idle, the stock engine internals were designed for high loads, and their low rpm nature makes them last Forever. I freely admit the fuel economy isn't there but it takes a lot of driving to offset the cost of a boosted small displacement engine. And Just how many drive either for economy anyways?

Thanks for this test. Makes you wonder if it’s worth while to boost a 4.8/5.3 for a good tow motor and see if the mileage is a considerable enough difference to go that route.
@bdugle12 жыл бұрын
The 4.8 at 12.4 psi is acting like nearly 9.0L or 548 cu in as far as airflow is concerned. The only downside is the tune for an NA engine is probably going to be around 13:1 afr or 0.440 BSFC. The turbo tune is going to require something like 11.5:1 afr (gas scale) and 0.500 BSFC (or higher) on gas, way more on E85. For towing, where you’re getting into boost a lot, this is going to affect fuel usage compared to an NA big inch engine. As far as torque and power, it’s just a matter of lb/min air into the engine! BTW, does anyone else hate this new YT comment layout? Using an iPad, if that makes a difference.

I'm not sure how many years ago, but it was at least 10 years ago. I remember reading articles in car craft and hot rod magazine, that compared HP and TQ numbers on different engines. They would use a computer program to tell you how fast a car would go. For example....say that you always use the same car 3500 lbs, perfect weather, perfect track conditions, basically the best the car could achieve. Is there something available today that you could use to tell us what all of the different TQ and HP numbers would do in the 1/8 or 1/4 mile? I know there are calculators on line but I don't know what they take into account weather, traction, stall converter,gear ratios. I think it would be pretty interesting to take all of your tests and run them through the same car simulator program if you had one available.

Gas engines aren't typically very efficient at low RPM-high load situations. Diesel engines are in a couple ways the opposite of gas engines; fuel regulated (adding fuel makes more power without necessarily increasing air intake), and they DO like to be lugged to a certain extent, high load and low RPM is where diesel engines shine.

I wish you would do something with the 502 BBC. Is it so similar that is a waste of time or such a flop that it isn't brought up, or just none in the wrecking yard. It's a BBC I wish was compared to others.

that was never a production motor-only available as replacement and after market (it's a crate motor)

I knew it was a crate motor but implying that if they were in the wrecking yard you would probably have run one. I still very much enjoy all you do Richard. Maybe there is someone' out there that can lend you one but I know that is wishful thinking. Thanks for all you do.

The 8100 / 496CI Gen 7 Big Block is close in CI and would be very cool to see up against the old Iron. Plentiful in 2500, 3500 and 4500 trucks. It was also a factory roller cam motor which is a welcomed improvement. It also has a symmetrical valve and port layout which works very well on port injected motors. No sure how good it would be on a carb motor.
I have built both turbo 455 and turbo 350 Oldsmobile the. The 350 had C casings and made a ton of power. Never had it on a Dyno but rolling burnouts at 80mph we're not a problem. 👍

I’d like to know what the boost is like on the 4.8 from idle
@richardholdener17272 жыл бұрын
when r you at WOT at idle?
@black98rt2 жыл бұрын
How low a rpm can you go on the dyno? Be neat to see pulls from 1,500 - 5,000 rpm or so for this kind of video. It would also show how long it takes for the turbo ls motors to build enough boost to match the big block. Lastly, how much boost can a stock 4.8 or 5.3 take at 1,500 - 2,000 rpm? Maybe call it the “little bang”. It would have to be a rather small turbo, and not a good pick for big hp, but how would an ls tolerant say an old Mitsubishi 20g turbo making 20lbs of boost at 1,500 rpm?
@rustysausage692 жыл бұрын
In what driving situation are you going to be at wide open, at 1500-2000rpm and making 20PSI? That RPM range is completely negated at wide open with both an automatic and manual transmissions, converter flash and launch RPM.
@black98rt2 жыл бұрын
@@rustysausage69 I just think it would be interesting to see since this video was talking about big torque numbers. Basically like running a gas engine the way diesels are run.
@richardholdener17272 жыл бұрын
not sure a 20g would make 20 psi at 1500 rpm on a 4.8l, but even if you had turbo that could, why would you? if you want diesel torque at diesel engine speeds-you should just get a diesel
@black98rt2 жыл бұрын
@@richardholdener1727 just thought it would be interesting to see if the motor could take it and how much low end torque could be possible 🤷🏻♂️. I know nobody would put something like that in an actual vehicle because there are obviously way better choices.

@kdsboosted49542 жыл бұрын
The gt45 in single form is kind of restrictive for a big block if your looking for all out power. Awesome on a twin set up. However I've just built a 454 and installed a gt45 for a stout tow rig set up. So we'll see how it does in real world application. Updates on my channel I also have a few of the other chevy engine set up's Richard supercharged and turbo'd again in real world applications check in for updates if your interested.

455 Buick fan .. People get all jacked up about the 500 Cad. I'd take a 396 BBC , 390 Ford, 383 Mopar over a 500 Cad every day of the week.. The displacement of the Cad looks impressive on paper and it pretty much ends right there. Fri n Fin blew through how many? I had one in a 75 Eldorado and it was all in by 4500 - it was not a confidence inspiring motor. I worried about bottom end integrity at rpm.. and speed parts are pricey... Just .. No .. Let me take a stab at 500hp with a bored 390 Ford or 383 Mopar... sounds like a much better program.

Agreed it is not very practical to build a CAD 500. But with new rods, pistons and a bit of cleanup to improve the oiling system they can certainly be reliable over 5000RPM. Its just nice to see obscure engines running. On Horsepower Monster they documented the build of a Turbo Gen II Chevy I6. There is no way in hell it was cost effective at all to build that thing. But it was sure neat to see it.
@arcdestriumph5862 жыл бұрын
@@geoffmooregm "a bit of cleanup to improve the oiling system" ?? Takes more than cleanup on the Olds V8 oiling system- it takes knowledge, restrictors in the block, modified drainback.. That's alot more than chamfering an oil hole like you would an a SBC. I've yet to see a supposed "Cadillac Engine Specialist" who bulletproofed their Cad bottom end and encouraged people to run 5000-7000 rpms... or guaranteed their oil mods would make a 500 live. I watched Frieburger n Finn blow up their 500 from a Cad Engine guy and wasn't surprised. Cadillac had some really dog crap horrible engines in the 60's and 70's and the 500 was one of them. I worked on alot of 60's and 70's Cads ..My best friend was part of that community and I got drug along for the ride. Follow your bliss.. if that includes a 500.. prepare your VISA for a workout.
@geoffmooregm2 жыл бұрын
@@arcdestriumph586 You can improve oiling to the mains with an external line. Its not a huge deal. Clean up the rest of the passages to improve flow and drainback. I am not in any way suggesting you go racing. But you can certainly have a fun and a unique street machine. I said quite clearly in my first post that it is not practical to build a CAD 500. I think everyone knows that. But it is neat to see them in the real world. Buicks have shitty bottom ends and oiling systems, same with Olds. Pontiacs have shitty lifter valleys and oiling systems. All these engines had "lifter first" oiling systems. If your sticking with GM then the BBC is certainly the way to go for practical max effort. But that has never stopped people from having fun with the other brands. If you have the money the aftermarket addresses a lot of the block issues.
