Fit with massive lugs, aggressive sidewalls, and tread spacing more-commonly found on a mud-terrain tire, the Nitto Tire Recon Grappler A/T is anything but conventional. Given it has a similar look to the wildly popular Ridge Grappler, we decided to put these two tires head-to-head. So, what’s the difference between this unconventional all-terrain and proven hybrid tire? Just press play to find out.

The Recons are great in snow despite the missing 3 peak rating. I drove 100 plus miles in snow coming out of Telluride with no issues. They also balance very well, like less than two ounces per side.

The snow rating is my concern. I live in the mountains of the north east and snow is a major concern here. I don’t want a AT because they suck in anything passed road or dry pack gravel /dirt roads.

Hi Ali, Thanks for your informative videos. I think I have watched most of your tire videos. I live in the Southwest in North Texas. I have spent a good amount of time in the Outerbanks area and love it there. I supported our Marines at New River and Beaufort and fell in love with the area. I wish this was my environment. I get more dry rocks and need the low weight and performance of the Recon Grappler. If I lived where you live, I would choose the Ridge. I must admit that I like quiet, fast acceleration, and the lower unsprung weight of the Recon. I think for my environment, the Recon edges out the Ridge. But it was a tough call. Thanks to your unbiased videos I was able to choose for myself and my driving conditions. My 2021 Rubicon 392 XR also Sarge Green is a beast and I love its performance. As a guy who always vacillated between performance cars and utility vehicles the 392 XR is so much fun. I don't want to choose because I want both on and off-road performance. However, since I will drive this more onroad than off I will opt for the lighter quieter tire with reasonable off-road performance. I am currently running on 35" Goodrich A/Ts, I even considered remaining stock in the XR configuration on the bronze bead lock capable 17s with 35s. But a two-inch bump stop to jump up to a 37 Grappler? I gotta do it. Thanks for helping me to make an informed decision. If all else fails, I have a 392 Extreme Recon running on Recons...kinda like they chose themselves. Cheers, Gary

I put the ridge grapplers on my F-150 two years ago and put 10k miles on them. A lot of over landing, most on trails with mud & ruts. Never had a single problem getting stuck or cuts. I keep them at 30 psi most of the time. They are awesome, and I will buy them again.

great review. Just subscribed. I have had Terra grapplers and then 2 sets of ridge grapplers on my 15 F350...love the Ridge but like you mention when you get to about 35k of wear they get a lil louder. I switched on my 20 F250 to Yoko X-At...also a great tire just now getting about the same or just slightly louder than the Ridge Grapplers at 30-35k wear. I dont go much on the trails anymore and pull trailers through job sites so more on pavements and wanting the quietest AT tire since I switched to the 7.3 Gas vs the Powerstroke.

Great informative review. I just ordered the Recons for 2011 Sierra 1500 along with a set of Fuel Rebels! Can’t wait to get these installed. I’ve been a fan of Nitto for years. They might be slightly higher in price but the benefits are undeniable. Previously had 3 different trucks with Terra Grapplers and would have gone with them again if they were available. That’s when I heard about the Recon Grappler. Thanks to video review like this one to help make my decision easier!

So excited to try the Recons. On my new Ram Rebel 2024 I have a brand new set of 35” Ridge grapplers and I love them! However on my wife’s 2022 Rubicon we are installing next week a set of 37” Recons to replace a terrible performing set of 37” Patagonia’s that actually reimbursed us for the terrible performance so kudos to milestar for the refund that means a lot but I’m going to what I use in my trucks. Nitto.

I drove through a snow storm with 35 inch ridge grapplers, and they were outstanding. I had about 15,000 miles on the tires. I also drive on black ice as well and they did great (beings I had AWD engaged and 15-20 mph) I also towed many stuck vehicles on the beach as well and the tires were great in traction in deep soft sand. I even pulled a f250 diesel with 4wd that got stuck.

The only area that wasn’t really covered was snow. I am not a huge fan of ridge grapplers in snow. In fact I love this tire in everything else except the snow. Best tire I’ve owned but unfortunately I DO go on snow often enough for it to concern me and every time I do, I feel uneasy about these tires. I have been stuck 4 times with these tires in snow that I wouldn’t consider heavy. My BFG KO2 tires never left me stranded in the snow, but that tire was UNBELIEVABLY hard to balance. In the shop every 1k miles trying again. Had to have 2 replaced under warranty the balance got so bad. Never got them 100% so I switched to this ridge grappler. Overall the best tire I have owned. I have had to balance them ONCE in the 40k miles I have put on them. So other than snow it’s the best tire to own. At least for me

I have used the ridge grapplers on 3 different vehicles from 33’s to now 37’s on my gladiator. I got around 20-25k with half tread left on them but changed them recently for some Mickey Thompson Baja boss at’s. The ridges in snow did really well especially new and offroad I never had an issue. I had to retire my ridges due to a metal item in the sidewall that wasn’t repairable since I had certs. I’m super happy with the new Baja boss at’s , way more grippy and quieter than the ridges and they are 3 peak which I need where I work currently up in North Dakota. Since the recons are new I can’t say how well they do but knowing nitto, they will be a contender for a long time.

Under my Gladiator, I don't air them down at all in the sand. Even with 30psi, I don't find it necessary. If I had them under something heavier, I'd probably drop them to 15psi, but the large footprint of the tire under Gladiator really hasn't required me to lower the pressure for the beach.

3 out of 4 of my Ridge Grappler lt have not been able to balance them since get go, not to mention, uneven wear even with several several alignment checks at several shops with numbers perfectly dialed in on my F250 with just a leveling kit. Also have gotten radial pull on those 3 tires. Yes I did install the traction bar, and caster shims. So I do not believe this is an issue with truck. So next set will be recon. Just bought a 2021 Ram 2500 Longhorn with the Cummins--looking at replacing stock Firestone Transforce AT with either more aggressive BFG KO2 ATs or Nitto Recon ATs. One aspect you didn't touch upon in the Ridge versus Recon debate was fuel mileage. Not sure if you had any experience with street tires before installing these but did you experience or do you expect a moderate drop in fuel mileage with these tires over the less aggressive stock Firestone's? You had the recon's on the Ram 2500 (not sure if it has Cummins). Let me know what you think and what MPG's you have been experiencing (city/hwy/combined)? I will be doing some moderate towing with boat and travel trailer and fuel mileage is definitely a huge factor. I could get by with maybe 1MPG less but 2-3 MPG less would be hurting me--lol! Thank you for this really great review as I was initially considering Ridge Grappler versus BFG KO2s but now I think they are too aggressive for my needs.
@DrivingLine
@DrivingLine Жыл бұрын
The Ram does have the Cummins. Both of these tires are more aggressive than a highway radial for sure, but not so much that you’re going to drop 2-3 miles per gallon. The Recon Grappler is slightly less aggressive than the Ridge. So, it’s going to be the one that delivers less rolling resistance, which will help with fuel economy. I doubt you’ll drop more than one mpg moving from the stock tire to one of these.
@davidgore5719
@davidgore5719 Жыл бұрын
@@DrivingLine Thanks for your expeditious response. With the Recon A/T, I was hoping it would be about a one MPG loss at most. I have 35" Trail Grapplers on my 2003 Jeep Rubicon and 33" BFG KM2s on my 1998 Chevy Z-71. With both those mud tires, I lost 2-3 MPG on each so that makes sense it would be around one MPG being quite a bit less aggressive. I'll see if I can lay my eyes on the actual Recon A/Ts at one of my tire shops to see it in person before I buy it. Will definitely be between the Nittos and BFGs but will have to sleep on it a few more nights. Need to also check out the Toyo AT3 just to rule it out. Thanks again for your input and review of these tires--David

I would go with the Ridge Grappler if you are doing more trail wheeling. Both the Recon and Ridge are true to size tires, but the Recon is about 6 pounds lighter per tire. Another point for the 38” Ridge is that it comes with a load range c sidewall, which is great for something like the new Bronco.

Not buying them again solely because of those side lugs being so odd angry after break in.

I just installed the recon grapplers on my truck as a daily driver mostly highway. There is a very humming noise compared to the highway tires that come stock. How’s your experience since you posted the video ?
@DrivingLine
@DrivingLine 11 ай бұрын
The Recon's make more noise over a highway radial, that's for sure. But, they are very quiet for an all-terrain tire. The ones under the Ram have around 35,000 miles on them now and are still quiet.

I wish you stated the weight of the tires, within the same size. I think a lot of tires out there are "heavy" which changes your entire dynamics. A reason I use Patagonia M/T.
@DrivingLine
@DrivingLine Жыл бұрын
You are correct. Weight absolutely makes a difference. I wish I would’ve weighed the tire and wheel combo, that way I could’ve given accurate comparisons for that. Most of the tires I like tend to be on the heavy side. In my experience with LT tires, the lighter it is, the less reliable the sidewall. I guess it just depends on what you’re doing with the vehicle.

I still think the Recon is the better on-road tire. It’s lighter and quieter. The Ridge remains the better trail tire. They both ride about the same. So, it comes down to if you need more off-road performance.

It’s been a while since I’ve spent a considerable amount of time on a K02. That’s what came on my JL Wrangler Rubicon when I purchased it. I remember them being a little loud and hard to balance. However, I haven’t spent enough time on the trail with those tires to make a fair comparison.

@DrivingLine

The Ridge Grappler is more aggressive. So, if you want that look and something more off-road oriented, that's what I would go with. The AT3 is more similar to the Recon Grappler in that they are both all-terrain tires. Both the AT3 and Ridge weigh about the same. So, there's no major difference there. It's also worth mentioning you can now get the Ridge in a 35x11.50, which is ideal for the stock Rubicon wheel over a 12.50.

With a 295/65R20 can is safely air down to 20 PSI without a beadlock rim?
@DrivingLine

You should be fine, however, part of that’s going to depend on if it’s under a 1 ton truck. I’m assuming with that size you’re probably a 1/2 ton truck or lighter, which should be fine. If it is under something heavier, I would go with 25 psi to start.

Snow?

@DrivingLine Жыл бұрын
I don't live in a place that sees any snow. So, I can't speak to that. The Recon has more sipes and from what I gather a compound that is more aligned with a 3-peak snowflake rated tire. My guess would be it would outperform the Ridge in winter mix and snow.
@WeekendWarriors87

Imo huge fail that the recon isn't snow rated. Definitely would have considered it if it was. Same with ridge grap actually, had tk go Goodyear
@DrivingLine
@DrivingLine 2 жыл бұрын
Nitto has a three-peak offering with the EXO Grappler. I think we may see the Recon eventually get the rating as well. The compound is right, but to achieve the three-peak official rating it has to undergo a certain amount of testing with the Rubber Manufacturer's Association. Given the Recon is so new, I don't think they've had enough time to test it.

I really like the Recon Grappler more these days. I put a set of 37 Recons under my dads Jeep a few months ago. He’s a picky 70-year-old that doesn’t care for loud tires and often drives fairly long distances (NC to Key West, Florida for example). He loves them. It’s also worth noting that the Recon is about 10 pounds lighter than some of the other 37s on the market, which is a huge bonus.

I currently have the Wildpeaks and will not be buying them again. Mine are pretty much worn out at 31,000 miles with rotation every 5,000 miles. They are also getting quite loud. They have been great in the snow but a lot of AT tires can do that. I am looking at KO2's, Nitto Recon or Toyo Open Country AT3.
