For me this is the definitive version of this song. This one got the radio play, this one is the best by far, but love Sammy Davis Jr. as well.

The definitive version is by the author of the song, who wrote it based on meeting "Bojangles" in the New Orleans drunk tank.

I was in 12 in 1970 when this Lp was released and bought it great record. I bought all their records in the 70's. This band was great and a big part my life in highschool and still have the records and on CD that I listen to now. Saw them like 5 times live in the 70's. Got to meet them in the mid seventies after a show at maybe Allegheny college. I took this Lp and"Stars And Stripes Forever" to get signed. After the show I went to the door in the school where they were. I asked the security guy if they could maybe sign them for me. He opened the door and asked them if would sign them for me. Jeff Hanna told me to come in. They were very accessible friendly guys, it wasn't like you were trying to meet The Beatles. My two friends and I spent about 15 minutes with them and were like in awe. This had to be 1977 or 78. I had the Lp's framed about 30 years and they look really cool. I would have been 19 or 20 when I met them which was a WOW moment. Thanks for the memories. Peace ❤

Yes this is the version that was so popular at the time, and in fact inspired Sammy to Incorporate it in his act. It was just part of his Vegas act that he also performed live on television shows and around the country when he appeared. If you want to hear another Sammy Davis Jr. song... one that did go to the top of the charts, check out "The Candyman". Anyway, great stuff!! Never heard that prologue before. Cool!!👍👍

I played this album a lot when I was in high school. The album I bought had really bad sklps through the song 'Propinquity'. They were so bad that it quickly got to the next song so it wasn't really worth getting up and moving the needle. I played the album so much that I was singing along, skips and all. My sister still laughs remembering me singing the skipping version. I eventually got an album witout skips and heard what I had been missing. I love this album!

Love, love, love this song! Love your reaction. So glad you played the prolog. Adds so much! The NGDB was/is a GREAT band, featuring the legendary multi-instrumentalist John McEuen. Known best for his banjo and mandolin playing, he taught Steve Martin to play the banjo early on. I actually have this album cover framed and on my wall! The entire album is fantastic and meant a lot to me growing up. Keep up the good work, my friend! 😊🎶❤

Oh man, you've got to react to their iconic song, Willin'. It's hard to describe but it's such a beloved song and a great sing-along, and I bet you would relate to it. The frontman Lowell George died in a bathtub, or at least that's what we used to always say when we were playing live and would cover that song. I think he got electrocuted or something. But then again that might just be folklore, like Bobby Fuller of the Bob Fuller Four dying with a belly full of gasoline at a young age. Check out A New Shade of Blue for a killer song by them. Although they had multiple hits.

This is closer to the original by Jerry Jeff Walker (who wrote it) - he does a live version from the Austin City Limits TV show. It's about a true story of being arrested and thrown in jail in New Orleans. Someday....Someday - you gotta give the original a listen. It's in the man's heart.

People such as " Mother Mabelle Carter, June Carter Cash 's mom I only mentioned her because you might not know other names. The interesting thing to me about the Sammy Davis Jr version of this song and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's version is that Sammy "becomes" Mr Bojangles whereas the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band does it from the perspective of someone describing Mr Bojangles as an observer. I'm pretty sure the lyrics are the same but the first person/third person perspectives are fascinating.
