The main character, the Paladin, is here finally to uphold justice and righteousness. According to Larian Studios' stats the Paladin is the most popular class in Baldur's Gate 3. For good reasons, it's a powerhouse by every metric of the definition. However, we have to ask ourselves one question, is Paladin good enough for Honour Mode? Spoiler alert: YES IT IS! In this video I show you to make a powerful Paladin early on in Baldur's Gate, in those first few levels where resources and skills are limited and the game might be at its hardest. But that is not a problem for our hero, especially if you follow my setup, gear and leveling strategy shown in this video.
In this video we make use of various Paladin-specific mechanics and synergies to make the Paladin overpowered early, and we then accordingly go over abilities, skills, leveling, how to use your attacks, subclass, races, oaths, honour mode best strategy, gear, itemizations, special combos and so forth.
AFTER YOU'VE LEVELED TO 7, USE THIS VIDEO FOR LEVEL 8-12 AND LATE GAME SETUP:

And remember, remember the words of our Oath that fuel the power in us:
KINDLE THE LIGHT: Through your acts of mercy, kindness, and forgiveness, kindle the light of hope in the world, beating back despair.
SHELTHER THE LIGHT: Where there is good, beauty, love, and laughter in the world, stand against the wickedness that would swallow it. Where life flourishes, stand against the forces that would render it barren.
PRESERVE YOUR OWN LIGHT: Delight in song and laughter, in beauty and art. If you allow the light to die in your own heart, you can’t preserve it in the world.
BE THE LIGHT: Be a glorious beacon for all who live in despair. Let the light of your joy and courage shine forth in all your deeds.

Not everything that’s popular is popping! - Ender Shepard The last time I checked people over consuming on food and entertainment is also very “popular” but it damn sure ain’t good for them or society. Obesity is on the rise. Smartphones & Tablets Screen time is off the charts. Paladin maybe the most popular class used in Baldur’s Gate 3 but that might be because it’s the easiest class to win fights with but that doesn’t mean that it’s the class that most players have the most fun with. Because for me I love Monk Class. I’m playing as Karlach rn and she’s Barbarian/Monk Class. I might even change her class to Druid/Monk so she can shapeshift to an Owl 🦉 Bear 🐻 too!

Taking Ancients allows you to ignore bringing a Cleric for a more damage focused class. You can get buffs from a camp only hireling Cleric. The best "Pure" Clerics are either Light (for the damage spells and Ward) or Life, for the area of effect channeled heals that buff your party. Both rely on Spirit Guardians (with Radiant armor to reduce hit chance) and the Phalar Aluve debuff. While that's useful, you could just bring another Sorcerer or Wizard to control the area and avoid damage, or just nuke them down faster anyway. Some would argue that you don't "need" a class that can heal and that healing potions would be enough even on Honor mode, and while that is technically true (it's easier with a solo run that abuses stealth tactics), the average player will not have a smooth time without at least one class that has some spell/channel sources of healing.

It makes sense that paladin is the most popular class! It’s: 1: A class not represented by one of the origin characters 2: as a non-origin-character class, visually and aesthetically distinct and appealing to a wide audience (e.g. sorcerers look too much like wizards and bards don’t quite fit the “power fantasy” vibe) 3: as a non-origin-character class, both versatile and unique in playstyle, letting you fulfill early any role

At the beginning of the day I convert all my Sorc points into the highest level Spell Slots, so I can either start the day with 8 level 5 Smites or keep a stock of Sorcerer points to use as needed when I need them. I do have to rest a lot, but dear gawd the damage I can pump out with this build is so fun.

I equip hellriders pride gloves, the whispering promise ring and the amulet of restoration. Together you get 2 turns of concentration free bless and 2 turns of blade ward for your entire party every short rest and 2 moe every long rest. All bonus actions and all with bonus heals! A combat lasts on average 3-4 rounds so if you're short resting after every major combat thats practically a permabuff! Add in adamantium splint and heavy armour master and you're also pretty much indestructible 😊

I really like your jumping off point at the end. at level 8 I swapped my frontline to a Vengeance 2 + Swords 6 and got a really nice bump in power. Being (mostly) a full caster it gets way more smites and group utility (including SOR and Expertise) along with the Slashing Flourish cleave.
@DevineDumbass
@DevineDumbass 10 ай бұрын
At level 11, however, pure paladin gets a large bump in power. Essentially, every single attack you make is a lvl 1 smite that you can stack actual smites on top of. As well as not losing your aura and other benefits like your 3rd feat
@bobnewkirk7003
@bobnewkirk7003 10 ай бұрын
@@DevineDumbass that is a viable option, however I'm not a fan of pure paladin as there is more available on other classes. Most of a Paladin's kit is tied up in Smite and being a half caster your spell slot progression isn't ideal. Also there are big power droughts between 2, 5 and 11; Less so on Oathbreaker with AOH at 7, but it doesn't buff much more than the paladin's damage. Prior to honor mode the play was to split warlock for the blade pact; P7/W5 for CHA dmg mod, 2x3rd slots on short rest, and 3rd attack. the CHA weapon damage at 3 adds a nice power bump at 8 and at 10 you pick up 3rd attack. However now that its been nerfed in Honor mode some new builds are surfacing. Personally I like the Bard split as sword flourishes make up for the 3rd attack and as a full caster their spell slots scale much better than paladin; along with all the benefits in the OP. you do miss out on a feat but other than GWM and Alert there aren't many good options and the missing ASI can be overcome with Elixirs and/or Gear.

Trying out different gear ... the Periapt of Wound Closure neck will automatically maximize any healing you receive. As a tank without a shield, that's useful. Combine with the Wapira's Crown which heals you for 1D6 when you heal someone else. Of course the Boots of Aid and Comfort and Whispering Promise ring. Gloves has been a really hard choice. Lots of great options. Baneful Strike are appealing, but I'm running with gloves of Missile Snaring to potentially negate an attack every single round. Now, when you throw a potion out of combat to heal anyone else ... that single low level potion of healing can heal all three of your other party members, plus give them temp hit points, plus heal yourself for 6. This also triggers when you use your Healing Radiance. Heals yourself for 10, heals others for 10, and because it heals others it also heals yourself for 6 (60% extra heals). Plus everyone gets 3 temp hit points. Then the next round it triggers again. Also giving everyone bless for three turns (two turn duration goes out, then the next turn it's refresh for another two turns). That's potentially something like 116 health in two turns and it only costs you a single bonus action and it's available EARLY in act 1. Start the day with that aid spell and you've got hit points for DAYS! The aid spell plus boots of aid and comfort is SO powerful early in the game. +8 hit points (effectively for everyone is crazy. Especially when people at this level would normally have closer to 30-40. Level 5 now. Hitting up the creche before doing the underdark to try something different. Sword of Justice until I lose concentration on the free shield of faith each short rest. After shield of faith is gone then I switch to Sorrow for the free bonus action cantrip to use on the rounds when I don't have a full attack from the great weapon master feat. Swords bard main (1st time). Trying out moon druid (1st time). Trying out the ancients paladin and using it like the main healer (1st time). And, I'm trying out the way of the shadow monk (no broken tavern brawler, and first time for this subclass). Only playing in tactician. The honor mode thing doesn't sound like fun to me. I still enjoy rolling back to old saves and trying different techniques in fights to do a fight multiple different ways.

Don't worry too much about the everburn sword. It IS good. But, by the time you're level 3-4 you'll replace it with the Sword of Justice. The +1 sword is more damage over time than 1D4 fire. Plus, it's a free shield of faith that recharges on short rest.

I either recommend going ancients paladin with laezel and wyll as your main members, as their main source of abilities also reset on short rests, or vengeance with adding either shadowheart or halsin as heal bots. Should you prefer ancients, consider using gale for full versatility with stuff like teleporting or invisibility, which also works well if you have astarion around. I personally started a dnd campaign as vengeance half-orc, so that was my bg3 character as well. 2 weapon fighting and half orc is just insane. If you run out of spell slots as paladin you can either long rest or swap lae‘zel and wyll out for karlach and astarion, as they have insane damage output too, while you can still channel oath for heals even when out of spellslots for smite

Problem with Ancients is the vow breaks extremelt easily, especially when trying to metagame in honor mode. Almost not worth the trouble. Like even just trying to get the jump on ANY mob, unless they are already hostile, instantly breaks it. Don't even get me started on Underdark. A mushroom gets triggered, instant vow break. The aid spell has got to be S tier. No concentration. Cast once and forget. And, it's just not 5 extra health for each party member. It's 5 max health. So, as you heal them up you're able to keep filling them up more. It's like an extra pool of temp hit points that replenishes as you heal. You get it over and over and over. When your characters only have 20-40 hit points in the early game having 5 extra health from AID plus temp hit points from boots of comfort is basically an extra 20-40% health on EACH character.

I love your BG3 content and have played many of your builds. They have all been very fun and effective. Just say regardless. It means the same thing as irregardless but is a standard word as opposed to nonstandard.

Fantastic build friend!! Though I do have a question; would this work with oath-breaker as well? I don't mind staying true to an oath, purely just curiosity.

This guide is great and you are my go to for bg3 builds. Thought I'd give Pally a run as my tank on tactician. Currently L4. Tbh, it has sucked. I miss constantly, lose concentration constantly, break my oath (WITH NO DAMN WARNING) constantly. It really isnt good and what was a blast in normal has become a chore in tactician. Its not just the insane missing, its the L2 goblins that crit every other hit, that I cant hit, that break my concentration nearly every turn etc. Constant long rests to refill spell slots. I dont think this is a very good early game class at all due to all this, super frustrating.

Nice guide m8. Currently on my own HM Paladin run and i opted for the Sussu Greatsword instead of the Jorgoral and it literally trivializes bosses with a single hit. Nere? Silenced. Ethel? Silencd. Creche Inquisitor? Silenced.

Cool tip but single target fights are hardly the hardest ones in the game. The difficulty in the fights always comes from having multiple enemies, so having attacks that deal strong aoe damage just trumps single target cc.

just had an idea 😅 and i think it would work really well. Obviously not tried it as I literally thought of it watching this video 🤣 Lvl 2 paladin. then 6 levels into bard - swords And 4 levels in fighter- battle master Reason is very simple, 6 levels of bard gives you access to all the spell slots if you were 12 paladin, while still geting 2x attack. since this part of the build really comes online at level 7, you'll still want to be pure paladin between level 5 and 7. 4 levels in fighter - gives you the sexy sweeping attack, which fair enough means you deal a bit less damage, but you still fk shit up with your divine smite. :D great for crowd control :P Personally, i always prefer multiclassing paladin with bard, and depending on the type of pally i've done both bardadins that are 7 ancient and 5 lore (amazing cc and defense, btw , defo a must do if you're going honour), or 6 pala (ancient or vengeance) and 6 lore (get haste, enjoy. remember if you're on honour mode that haste will only give you one attack with the extra action, not two, so you may want to use your haste action for a spell attack or cc. other spell can be anything but my fav is warden of vitality) Or similar to above, i've also enjoyed 2 pally and 10 bard (sword) with 2x attack and up to 2x level 5 spell slots and even 1 x level 6, you will be an absolute menace. level 5and 6 divine smite are a bit of a waste but a great back up (same damage as level 4), but you also get a whole lot of cc, and if you want to you can even learn counterspell and haste as your to use those level 5 and 6 to nulify threathening spells. ye i love my pally 🤣

Nice build, and great video. Certainly one of the most damage dealing builds I've tried out.. Thumbs up. However.... caution: Like to punish slavers in the Grymforge who beat up on Gnomes? Mr Paladin doesn't.... Like to make a deal with Auntie Ethel? Mr Paladin doesn't... Like to side with Grut against Spaw after fighting alongside him clearing out the under-dark? Mr Paladin doesn't... Thats just half the problems in act 1 alone.... Like to steal stuff and not get caught? Oh thats actually cool with Mr Paladin :P The oath makes total sense.... Bleh Paladins...

I was so excited about the cool sword, but I managed to get Vos to drop his Legendary great sword in act 1, so by the time I got it, I ended up giving it to another character. Completed all of the equipment (except cloak) in act 1, Solid start really makes some of the other game play more enjoyable when I am not struggling. Great video, looking forward to strolling through the rest of the game with my Paladin

I picked this video randomly. I'll spare everyone here some headaches. Here are my tips. Ignore all the build info. Always have Knock, Gaseous Form, Bless, and Aid. Save Karlach. Don't forget to save the Shadow Cursed Lands. Don't kill the NightSong. Use Summon Elemental on Thorm (Myrkul), and imo use Earth elemental. When you get to MoonRise Towers, there are no long rests for several hours of game play, so be prepared first. What else...the game starts robbing your dice rolls at about MoonRise, so expect to go from hero to zero real quick. The Thorm battle can either take multiple play throughs and reloads and tears or one fairly simple victory with an elemental. Be kind to animals because they nearly always end up lending you a hand, except for the rats in the Temple of Shar, F them and you'll see why. I don't know, I'm sure I have more but for any more extremely pragmatic and straight forward tips, hit me up folks. Oh yeah, when you cast any darkness spells i.e. Hadar, your other character generally can't shoot through it so be aware that your area spells will affect everybody. P.S use the ogre summoning horn before Shar and the Flesh summoning bell before MoonRise otherwise they're useless. 😂. Good luck

for mid to late game i would say, 5 pally, 2 white drag sorc and the rest abju wizard. stacking agathys, force conduit, heavy armor master, and blade ward with fire shield chill is freaking insane. trust me. Basically, heavy armor master and force conduit is upto 10 physical damage negated since heavy armor master is 3 less points of damage and the 7 maximum stacks of force conduit is 7 less damage taken, now arcane ward from abju wizard can stack upto 20 times which works like force conduit but for all damage, so thats 30 less damage taken. metamagic from sorcerer can extend bladeward for enough rounds to be considered useful that halves the damage from physical attacks, so now we have 60 points of damage reduction. Now be white dragon sorc for agathys without classing into warlock and you can reduce damage to the temporary hitpoints to 0 and deal (spell level x 5) in ice and then use metamagic on flameshield chill (there is a item to cast it for free) and thats 2d8 ice on top of aforementioned. this allows you to proc many attacks of opportunity against you by baiting enemies to hit, dealing smite levels of damage without wasting an action, meaning you can save spellslots (optionally) and use the extra attack capstone to finish the enemies you baited. best part is that since your last levels are fullcaster from levels 6-12 you can cast level 5 wizard spells should you scribe them from scrolls. its awesome, i did a similar build but used cleric instead of pally, got yeeted from a series of mistakes i made from being ill prepared for myrkel solo honour mode. i didn't account for necrotic damage reduction. since i killed isobel before getting selunes blessing.

Me and my buds savescummed our way into getting the Silver Sword of the Astral Plane from act 1 using Command: Drop Weapon in turn base mode. I'd argue not getting it since it's honestly way too powerful on a Gith character, but I think if you're willing to forgo the AoE from Jorgoral's weapon skill, the silver sword would be a better pick since it gives your Gith character advantage on multiple ability saving throws, so at times you feel unstoppable. Also Soulbreaker is basically a Stun Smite
