Why do people tempt fate like this when no lifeguards are on duty? Just wait till the season kicks in and guards are on duty and the water is warmer, etc. Then again I never liked swimming at a beach much, feels unsafe anyway. I'd rather swim in a good Olympic size pool or whatever with tons of guards on duty. I used to be a pretty good swimmer but I wouldn't even think of tempting fate like this.

He did what he could to try to save his daughter so i hold nothing against him or his actions. But i would say never swim these waters without lifegaurds on duty along witth other swimmers who may be a help. northern US beaches really from the carolina's on up are well known for having strong rip tides. Here in Puerto rico, i hear of drownings just about every 4 months because people underestimate the water, and over estimate their abilities. And surely never look at the locals especially kids as a guide to the dangers there in, the locals grew up on such waters and well know what to do.

@@Junior-rt6xr Well not there and in the water to understand the conditions remains the fact. not being a 'great swimmer' is relative to the situation. we also dont know his age, and health conditions. and yes if he was a good swimmer at all. still, he did what a dad is suppose to do. The conditions must have been rough to not only see his daughter in trouble and himself drown, but i hear another dad also drowned that day. so much can be taken from that.

Also, the water was barely 60 degrees. Not one person was in the water because it was freezing. Why did she go in? What’s the story? Was she in the rocks and fell in? Can’t imagine anyone going in the water for a swim in those conditions. I don’t get it

i remember i was around 4 years old when i clumsily jumped into the pool out of curiosity. good thing my dad was near me and rescued me out of the pool. this was a deep end pool that was about 8 ft! my dad jumped in with all his clothes on and everyone watching!!! my dad saved me!!

I was in Saint Thomas and went for an early morning swim about 5:30 in the morning. Nobody was on the beach. Saint Thomas has a reputation very very strong riptides. I was a pretty good swimmer. I thought I swam out pretty far from shore. When I attempted to go back, I felt myself going nowhere like I was being dragged out to see I am mediately did a powerful breast stroke. It was like two steps up, one step back, two steps up, one step back, 8 foot through the riptide, till I finally made it to the other side. I was exhausted. What I didn't know, was that I should've went with the riptide sideways diagonally and it doesn't matter if it brings you down a mile or more down the beach that's the way to get out of the riptide never fight a riptide I'm 62 years old now and I will not go in the water far away like I used to when I was younger, I learned my lesson that day I almost drowned. Thank God I was strong enough to fight through the riptide. But if I used my brain I would've just went with the riptide.

I’m a lifeguard myself and people act like lifeguards don’t do anything until something happens and you need help.
