One point that is missed by the "we only have Dillon" crowd is the effect he will have on his teammates/ opponents. When we got Stevens, he hit people so hard that they were reluctant to start a war. Our opponents knew that if a war happened, we had a nuke. Also, when every member of NJ sees Dillon, Noeson, Cotter, Colton and Kovasevic hitting at every opportunity, it becomes your team identity and you see Jesper Bratt and Thomas Tatar finishing their checks. It goes right down the line. They will learn to close out the player and take the body as a team. The team buying in to solid body play is why Florida lifted Lord Stanley this year.

I personally did not realize how big of a guy Dillon was until watching this video. It doesn't take a big name to lay some punishment. On another note, apparently Siegenthaler led the top 4 D-men in hits last year with 88. Luke and Simon were in the 20s. I'm sorry for ripping on ya Siegs. At the least, you had heart. To what you were saying, some bigger guys like Dillon and Cotter to hold their own against other big guys can give our smaller skaters some freedom to lay hits on other players their size. Now Siegs doesnt have to be the one to go fight Rempe lol

This is by far my favorite show of yours haha. You’re right and a lot of fans have been on the same page with the fact that we need more than skill and speed. I’ve never been more embarrassed watching our boys than the last two games against the dirty rags. They absolutely rag dolled us and we had no chance against them bc of that. I was at the NJ vs NYR game last year at the Rock, you know the one where Matt Rempe completely punked our entire team by himself and knocked down 2 of our players before being ejected. That was the most embarrassed I've ever been to be a Devils fan, calling us soft is putting it nicely. We also lost that game 5-1, to add insult to injury. Not a good time to be a Devils fan for sure. The next game we played the Rags was the line brawl which helped to heal the wounds a little. We needed these offseason moves. No more being soft in Jersey!

Brother, a couple years ago I was at Vegas Devils game the game before Mac Black went on IR. Robin Lehner the goalie, sucker punched and dropped Bahl in front of his net way after the play. Then Lehner ripped off his helmet and challenged the entire NJ team in their own barn .....and PUNKED OUT the entire NJ team. Nobody did a thing. There is a picture of me from the broadcast standing right behind Lehner losing my mind. This was 3 seasons ago now. Bout damn time grit was prioritized. And F the Rangers man

I do believe the added size we acquired and getting a hopefully healthy hamilton back will help out the defense and cut down on the tons of odd man rushes we had go against us last year so optimistic here. but i still feel adding a player like a daniel sprong could help us or a tyler johnson could we get a sprong for a 2-3 mil deal potential to add 20 goals i think gives reassurance and adds an element that other teams will have to prepare for nightly.

The more I think back on the 23-24 season, the more I feel Fitz used it as a season to evaluate who he felt were long term pieces, and those who he was on the fence about were given a chance to prove they belonged on the team. Had 22-23 been a terrible year and Fitz spent the entire 23-24 season with the same roster watching the same thing happen, that would be reason for firing him. But the team was awesome in 22-23, individual records were set, team records were set, we came back and beat the Rangers in the first round, so to dismantle the team at that point would have made no sense. They probably overachieved, surprised the league with what they accomplished, and why wouldn’t Fitz want to run most of that team back in 23-24. Toffoli was signed to improve the team, but our goaltending took major steps back and we were plagued by injury and I think he knew it just wasn’t their year. So rather than overpay to upgrade between the pipes, they ran with what they had to decide who stayed and who went. Fast forward to this summer and the Markstrom deal got done, we said goodbye to Schmid and Holtz, got Cotter in trade and brought in the big men on the blue line like he said he would. Last season was disappointing for all of us but that’s in the past and the moves needed to improve in many areas were addressed and we are a far better team today than we were to close out last season. And WHEN NJ are a buyer at the 25 deadline, we can add another piece up front at that time in preparation for a deep playoff run. Fitz hasn’t been perfect but I’m very happy with the moves that have been made and this is as excited as I’ve been for a new season to start in a very long time. LGD!!

Let’s say it would have taken our 2024 first rounder (10th overall) and a roster player (Holtz or Bahl) and no salary retention. That deal could have been done and we would have improved our chances of making the playoffs, but still would have been no guarantee to make the post season or to have made any significant noise in the post season. That bit of time passing and the Flames knowing Markstrom was po’d about how things were handled brought his trade value down as Calgary had to get a deal done. So we got our guy for a 2025 first rounder (should be 20 or higher overall), Bahl and salary retention. I do think the $$$ eaten by the Flames is going to come in handy on the Mercer deal or to acquire another forward at 2025 trade deadline.

@ryanreist6841 I would have never paid that price for Markstrom last year if that is what the final proposal was. That is INSANELY high. I don't complain about not closing that deal. My gripe is that we did not get Kahkonen/Allen/or any other goalie from throughout the entire league much sooner. We could have gotten anyone on the cheap that would have given us a much better chance than what we were getting at the time! I agree on the Flames retention. Every bit of $ counts. Getting Calgary to retain was a great move by Fitz. Hopefully it does pave the way for an addition at some point!

They were obviously close at the deadline, I heard salary retention was the sticking point but would like to know what pieces were going to Calgary in that deal. Conroy was swinging for the fences by the sounds of things, what Calgary was rumoured to be looking for was a kings ransom and obviously why a deal didn’t materialize at that time.

Roll players/position players It’s what the team needed and it’s what the team got. MacDermid, Lazar(only player that existed on the 2023-2024 roster that did his job as a Roll player besides Smith and until Mac joined), Cotter, Dillion, Noesen and Kovacevic. I saw the Baby Hughes comment, lol and I have to say, the Norris winner this past season had a total of 29 hits for the year. Luke wasn’t drafted to be the next Luke Schenn. Pretty sure they want him to develop like Quinn, the Norris winner with 29 hits for the year. There are others on the team that can throw the body around. If you want to see another Hughes injured most the season, tell the 20 year old in a 20 year old scrawny body to start using it as a wrecking ball.

Stamkos and Marchessault was a long shot I suppose. Sharongovich situation sucks, -- but I am happy for him. Definitely need to sign Mercer.

Agreed. Palat Tatar and mercer are guys that are capable of 20 goals 50 pts and can play in the top 6. Safe bet that at least one of them has a bounce back season. Stamkos and marchessault were unrealistic. Frankly I wanted arvidsson... the oilers got him for only 4mil !

@zachw4829 Zadorov makes up for quantity in QUALITY. Some of his hits are of the bone jarring variety. I think he instills fear in opposing forwards. Tanev is a shot blocker. He was tied for 3rd in the league with 207. I would have taken a guy like that any day

@@runninwiththedevils does sound nice but blocking shots you are alot more prone to injuries which is the case for Tanev. Z has huge hits but not as consistent with hits like the other defensemen on that list. Devils need consistency, 82 games is a long season.

@@runninwiththedevils I agree blocked shots are underrated, Pesce with 113 blocked shots and Dillon with 111 last season. More then the Devils top shot blocker on the team which happened to be Nemec! Shocking tbh. I think these two players are great additions.

Look at Brady at no. 3 in hitting. Number 3! If the Devils want a championship do everything to get that guy. Brady wants to get on a good team and get out of that backwater Ottawa. Maybe Jack is our Huberdeau? Ok - shoot me. But I want a Tkachuk on my team. I guarantee you if Brady suits up in a Devils jersey the Rangers bench won’t be laughing at us the way they’ve been doing after they ran over us this past season.

Over emphasis on size & physicality. Under emphasis on actual hockey talent. The offseason in a nut shell. These aren't guys that were brought in because they are good at hockey. They we're brought in because they are tall. No star was brought in. Nobody worth getting excited about. They are all kind of average players that are up there in age. I'm expected to believe that middling players like these will transform the team from the disaster we saw into a top contender? I don't think so. I find bringing back Tatar & Noesen particularly embarrassing. Nobody was clamoring for that. They aren't good. We already had enough underwhelming forwards in the bottom 6. One is being paid 6 million bucks a year to do nothing. Might as well of just done nothing at all at forward. Massive disappointment.

The team bites back, the problems were what they were for a while, injuries and goaltending.
