You can see on 27:42 the second-to-top part of the blade broke, the sharp part breaking off completely. Why do you think the clip on 27:45 was more zoomed out? It was to hide the missing piece. It looks to completely break on the last shot. So sword community is still right, it can't be done.

@everythingsalright1121
@everythingsalright1121 Жыл бұрын
Keep in mind there were far more cheap/poor quality swords in circulation throughout medieval Europe, Central Asia and East Asia than expensive top quality ones, so we're more likely to come across those when doing historical site excavations. The well preserved swords that are family heirlooms and museum pieces are typically ceremonial in purpose only even though they'd be good weapons; a knight or a samurai may be able to afford a high quality sword, but waiting for months for it to be made is another issue entirely (and it could easily take weeks or months for a top end piece especially when you consider they didn't have modern equipment to cut down on manufacturing time, time in which said warrior might be called upon to fight). Furthermore swords required lots pf training time, expensive or not. It's why for most medieval armies the weapon of choice was the spear. It doesnt take much training to poke someone with a pointy stick; a sword was your backup weapon.
@avoidant560
@avoidant560 Жыл бұрын
...and that's probably also why many military regiments (local farmhands/militia conscripts) in the past trained as a group with shields and spears since it's the fastest to nurture and most affordable one... a classic poke 'n poke strategy.

So I stumbled across this video and then binged your entire channel in basically one sitting. Gotta say I love your work. Particularly appreciate that you're willing to put out "failed" builds like your struggles with damascus. As someone who is just starting to get into blacksmithing, it's inspiring. One thing I would love to see is how long your builds take. Either section by section (eg "assembling the segments +3 hours", "shaping the handle +2 hours") or just a rough hours total at the end.

Thanks a lot! I really appreciate you checking out the other videos, I know some of them are a bit rough 😄 The hours I spent on a build are always a bit difficult to count because there’s a lot of thinking outside the workshop. I worked for about 3 months on this and roughly 150-200h in the workshop but then again a lot of that is trying out things, taking things apart etc. But I’ll try to somewhat count the hours on a future project ✌🏻

Bad Asssssss Sven!!! I think if you had a dedicated shop with all the tools and toys, you would probably have had it together in a day or two with your final schematic in mind. But, you didn't have all that, and you still did everything you did on your own with the tools available. I think you did an incredible job, and it's final form is just awesome! Well done my man 😁👍🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Almost forgot, the cut scenes are hilarious as well!

Segmented blades is an interesting problem. Remember Kurgan in the first Highlander movie? His segmented sword fascinated me and I tried to figure out a way to make a sword that could be broken down and reassembled like that and still be strong and sturdy enough to survive a fight. This was all theoretical and I never even considered trying to make anything so I could afford to come up with pretty insane ideas. Eventually I think the best of my whacky ideas was to use a vacuum to keep the segments together. It would rely on incredibly tight tolerances with surfaces as close to perfect as gauge blocks which would allow them to form a seal. By making the blocks have a taper at one end and a slot to match the taper of the next block at the other they would self index, and the surfaces inside the taper would be protected from damage ensuring the cavum seal wouldn't be broken by a single swing of the sword. Down the middle of the segments there would be a hole running from the handle to the tip segment which would be solid. By pumping out the air in the hollow core the segments would be held together. The problem with something like tis is tolerances, tolerances and tolerances. First of making the segments to the necessary tolerances would be a nightmare, but I believe that it would be possible. Next there is the importance of the surface finish of the connection tabs not being marred in any way as that would quickly compromise their ability to form a seal. And then there's dust, lint and just about any kind of dust as that again would compromise the quality of the seal that's needed. All in all it's not a very realistic design as there are to many ways it could fail, and on top of that the cost of making something like this would be monstrous. Add that I doubt it would prove very resilient and it feels even less worth ever trying to make something like this. However is what you wanted was a sword that could be broken down, but were not necessarily sturdy enough to swing with any authority then the "tongue and grove" idea still works. Make the center channel big enough to thread a decently sized wire through and use that to connect the tip segment to a screw type mechanism for tightening the wire and you have a sword that can be built a lot cheaper than the first version. The tolerances doesn't have to be nearly as tight so the machining would be a lot cheaper. There's a world of difference to machining something to a fraction of a thousands of an inch and doing the same but to better than a millionth of an inch. The resulting sword would look good but if the wire keeping it together stretch the least bit it will start moving in the joints. Using a solid wire or even a rod would make it sturdier but compromise on the whole take down idea by making it bulky when disassembled. Using two tapered pins for each segment instead of machining a tongue and grove in each would make it easier and cheaper to make and they would still indicate securely.
