I´ve owned my Rocky for 6 years of daily use without a hiccup. My experience matched what you found on the video. I can recommend the Rocky as a reliable grinder with the ability to produce consistent results over many years. It works well for espresso and french press grinds.

Nice, rational, and thorough video--keep 'em coming! One point of confusion: based on the audio, it appeared that the little plates with the example grinds were not lined up with the grinders they represented.

This is the first video pushing a flat burr grinder. Putting grinders of large price differences against each other was like putting an Olympic runner up against a high school track runner. Would be nice if you considered providing USA measurements as well. I already bought the Breville as I have a Breville espresso maker and if adjustments are needed the Smart Pro can be made to get a better outcome than you got.

This a good comparison. I was given a used Rocky and almost bought the Mazzer at one time. The Rocky is exactly as you describe. It does clump a bit. With a WDT to break up the clumps, I think the Rocky’s flavor and crema could potentially match the Mazzer. The reason I didn’t buy the Mazzer is that it doesn’t single dose all that well. But the Mazzer is a beautiful machine.

Good video, but a bit of feedback. The dose in the basket is too high, you can see this when you show the puck after you've pulled the shot. You can see the screen and the screw imprinted into the puck. There should be space between the shower screen and the puck so it doesn't burn it. Also for a good comparison there wasn't any weighing of the beans although you might have done it off camera.

One downside to the Rocky is that I can't upgrade the MD40 burrs. I have this machine, and it's probably time to replace the original burrs, but the best I can do is get the same burrs. I don't know why no one makes something because I really do enjoy my Rocky.

The Rocky does have smaller Burrs than the Mazzer, however, it actually performed quite well. Even with the genuine Rancilio Burrs, I'm sure you can't go wrong...

Hi, You might have discovered this already yourself by now but settings on grinders are usually not absolute. Adding to that: grind settings will differ dramatically from one type of beans to another and finally there is taste preference. So you’ll need to dial in your grinder yourself. Here are some quick steps: - determine the amount of coffee for your filter (by weight!) - aim for a 20s to 30s shot. - adjust your grinder until you’re in that range. - taste your espresso. - If it’s too sour, grind a little finer - if it’s too bitter, grind a little coarser Remember to weigh your coffee in and liquid coffee out and time how long it takes to brew a 1:2 ratio. (E.g. 16g in, 32g out) At first it’s a bit of a hassle but after some time it’ll be like a second nature. Enjoy! PS let me know how you’re doing. Cheers!
