Let me piggy back off your point a little bit 😮 In this social media age people are looking for an identity, a community , friends Having an aesthetic helps them find a community It’s good in theory but the practicality of it thoo …? Cos they are influenced based on beauty and popularity and people without a high sense of self would just fall into it because “everyone is doing it” Hence being in a community and still feeling empty 😕 And pun intended here Empty pockets and empty souls.

I feel like the clean girl aesthetic is a curated white girl thing because most poc have been doing those looks for years but we’re seen as ghetto or not elegant. My mom did it in the 90s and ppl thought she was just another ghetto or loud Latina. That’s just my own personal view since I am Latina but I’m pretty sure it’s the same for other poc as well. I know a lot of my Indian friends had the oil slick back hair with gold hoop earrings but ppl thought of them as weird or dirty. Now that white girls like Hayley Bieber are doing it, it’s considered “clean”
@tatafromthehood55734 ай бұрын
Exactly, a lot of what clean girl aesthetic is can be traced back to poc. I'm not latina but I'm African American and I remember how not to long ago a lot of people would insult slick back hair and hoop earrings by referring to it as the "hot Cheetos girl" look and used it to reinforce the ghetto latina/ black girl stereotype. I didn't know that hoop earrings could be found in Indian culture though.

My mom was a beige mom. House was beige, from the kitchen to the bathrooms to her bedroom. I honestly like it now as an adult since she played around with shades and texture. But my room was never beige. She always left it up to me how I wanted to decorate my space and never enforced her preferences on me. It was her home so she rightfully decorated it how she wanted with beige but she understood I wanted a space of my own and let me do whatever I wanted with my room. Painting your kid's toys beige is so weird like kids thrive on colours! My mum always made sure I had colour and vibrancy in my environment. She hand-painted my old crib and rockick chair in a studio Ghibli theme and looking back on the pics, it was so beautiful!
@sameerakhan7455Ай бұрын
Ah, when you talked about the different shades and textures I had a feeling your mother would be into arts or into interior design (which I find can be a form of artistic expression in itself) The last part of your crib and rocking chair being painted in studio Ghibli theme was so too cute. I'm glad she understood the need to let children's creatively through colours out, especially with her having her own beige look that she liked. I loved this comment. Where I live (I don’t know if this happens anywhere else), influencers show up to restaurants with suitcases filled with clothes. They go into the bathrooms, change, and come back out to take multiple photos (they usually come with a friend/lackey who is responsible for taking the photos). These influencers aren’t there to eat food. Just take photos. It’s gotten so bad that some restaurants don’t allow influencers to take photos or they create a special menu for influencers. i feel people are forgetting that as multifaceted humans beings we don’t have to be able to perfectly fit into any box; also ur life experiences can very much authentically shape your personal aesthetics. this all ties in to late stage capitalism, and a decline in originality which is ironic as individualistic mindsets are all the rage rn. we are humans we don’t have to be like robots. lots of subcultures have become aesthetic-fied as well; unlike subcultures these aesthetics aren’t usually based around real community, culture, or shared beliefs.

I don't think individuality was ever alive. We are a social species whose successful survival depends on tribalism and social cohesion. We like ti belong. A little bit of individuality goes a long way, but by and large, we crave to be more alike than stand apart, and it's been so since Ugga invented the first loincloth. It's nothing new. @mightyseashell5 ай бұрын
Money drives the production of these aesthetics. They sell the idea of hyper-individualism in a group setting. They tell us this is the new trend to look a certain way with every aesthetic. This is what drives so many inconsistencies in our own personalities. We start to feel like other people don't understand our fashion choices because they aren't even our own choices. If you were wearing something you actually resonated with, there wouldn't be any internal conflict about your fashion choices and thinking that whether other people accept them or not will not affect you or have a deep meaning about other people's opinions about your fashion choices. We begin to make fun or snark remarks about other people for not being as fashionable as we are. We might not even recognize that we are self-reflecting. Making fun of other people because we deem them not fashionable is a clear portrayal of the conflict we face with our own fashion choices. This is a purely online experience and in real life, it's just capitalism. It is about making more money. These corporations don't care what internal conflict you have because they will just push out a new aesthetic to fix that presumed conflict. They don't care whether you look good or not as long as you buy into the train of constant consumption. This is so clear when a person criticizes a modern fashion choice, it's easier to write them off for being ignorant about fashion or just a hater instead of analyzing why we made that choice.

It's somewhat fun when an aesthetic finally describes your overall look. It's not so fun when it becomes a costume or joke. I'm a blue collar housewife in a rural small town, and it shows. I am the "farmer's daughter" or "cottagecore coquette" or "farmcore nymph" or "prairie girl" or "Americana" or "countrycore" in real life. I have some "morute" and "trailer park princess" touches as well, and that last one reminds me of upper middle class teens pretending to be poor for aesthetic reasons (happens often nowadays). I didn't grow up in a trailer park, but I've lived among lower class and lower middle class people my entire life, so the cultures behind these aesthetics are genuine for me. My look and lifestyle hasn't changed much in my lifetime. I enjoy how playful aesthetics are, but they're artificial skins and short-term roleplay for many people, rather than a subculture or lifestyle. They lack meaning and purpose on their own. Making them a personality is honestly kind of sad. I've seen girls change aesthetics with every boyfriend or new best friend they have. It's weird. As for my cat girl tendencies, I add those pieces to my already existent "farmcore coquette" aesthetic in my somewhat-of-a-country-girl real life. It's but one small part of a larger picture.

Like coquette and other aesthetics, at least I can get away with applying a ton of makeup that fits this standard. While clean girl aesthetic was at its highest peak, my acne was terrible. The way that I never saw any women with this aesthetic and my type of skin was detrimental and resulted in hundreds of dollars dropped JUST on skincare due to influencers curating this belief that the item will stop hyperpigmentation. If a woman does post about her face, people will comment on her visuals and say that she is not "taking care of herself." I am currently seeing a dermatologist (which is going amazing), but I wish that more girls know that having acne is more than simply just getting "dirt" on your face or not wanting to prioritize self-care :(

My friend and I were talking about this, but if you’re honest with yourself and just buy what you like, your stuff does end up usually going together. It creates a “you” aesthetic. It may not be a defined aesthetic but people tend to gravitate towards things with similar qualities whether they realize it or not. So just do what you like and make your own aesthetic

This video was so so interesting because my experience with aesthetics has been so different from yourss! I think it's maybe because I've been drawn to like lifestyle based aesthetics. Downtown girl, acadameia aesthetics, goth aesthetics, goblincoree(that one's very niche) and now, Earthy Black Girl. Watching this video and getting to the segment where you spoke about how you shouldn't join communities just based on looks I realized the communities I was joining all revolved around lifestyle, and looks just sort of trailed along for the ride. I feel like these are so much more fulfilling and entertaining for me!! Another thing, Anytime i've participated in an aesthetic..it wasn't for anybody but myself. I always did it because I thought it looked cute and i thought it would make me happy. "I adore this aesthetic, I want to emulate it in my life because it's so so cool!" has been my mentality throughout everything. I think interacting with aesthetic culture can be actually fun if done in a healthy way, and ONLY for yourself. Not for social media, not to make friends, not for anything but you, My friend group is a mixed bag, and a lot of us go after very specific aesthetics that are so totally different. You should NOT base your friendships off of an aesthetic. Also trend hopping on certain aesthetics also seems pretty unhealthy too. At the end of the day, you should be following an aesthetic because you ENJOY it. You can participate without destroying your self esteem and value your individuality above all. Nvm, I got to 23:25 and I've been participating in SUBCULTURES and a feww aesthetics. Even then though you can apply the same mentallity to both.

As a lolita, seeing a relatively large youtube channel mention our fashion is always a W! I didn't know people were linking lolita fashion with coquette tho. I guess there are ~some~ aesthetics overlaps? Idk. But about the "coquette" house decor itself, it obviously isn't new and has been around since way before Tiktok got popular. There's that one Japanese household shop called Romantic Princess that has always been a huge inspiration for me to decorate my own bedroom

I thought I'm free from this because I don't have tiktok, don't care about any influencers etc, but hell, I noticed I'm not really free when I saw some flowery jewelery I really liked, but I said to myself I wouldn't wear this because it doesn't fit my style... and now I'm thinking why am I restricting myself to certain styles even if I find something pretty? It's pretty sad.

I like playing with "aesthetics" when there's a part of your personality that maybe you can't show (cultural reasons, for example, etc.) or still don't know how (social anxiety, shyness, ....) , it helps me to actually feel more like myself at times when I can't or can't *yet* show that side of me

In the psychology world, I feel the intense feeling of needing to stick to an aesthetic is evidence of an adolescent brain. When you get older, you don’t feel the need to stick to one look to fit into a crowd. The need is just not as intense.

Thank you for being one of the few people I’ve seem to critique the use of the word aesthetic. I feel like it’s used ignorantly by people and they just label anything as “aesthetic” like it’s only an adjective rather than actually describing it. Like what IS the aesthetic you’re commenting on, please?

the only time where aesthetics were ever useful to me is when I broke my fav mug and wanted to get a similar one, so I typed in cottage core ceramic mug into etsy and boom perfect match, but mind you I had to think a bit to even come up with this silly example so that says it all

for me, i like certain aesthetics because i grew up watching shows or movies that had those particular looks and always wanted to wear that once i got older. i like coquette because i like the regency/victorian era like the style is cute and also reminds me of beauty and the beast. i like whimsygoth because shows like sabrina the teenage witch and charmed had those aesthetic. i like goth mostly romantic because of the vampires i watched like bram stokers dracula and drusilla from buffy & dark academia because i read books from authors like edgar a. poe. also like anime and videos games. my personal style is mix of all these aesthetics, i dont confine myself to a box. I wish more ppl would just embrace what they like inside of trying to conform to one ideal or look

I generally follow Kitchener essences when it comes to fashion and aesthetic choices. It’s timeless and is based on your physical proportions so whatever aesthetic you like you can make it work for you if you follow your essence. It’s not a trend it’s like unlocking a game changer.

Would highly recommend following folks who have tips about finding what feels right for YOU. Aesthetics are fun to play with and it's fine to take inspo from them, but they can't be anything bc life isn't an aesthetic. One thing that helped me was thrifting. Go to the thrift store and spend the time to put together an outfit with whatever you can find there. Have fun! Play dress up! Pick stuff that feels like You

Having OCD or being someone who is very overstimulated when surrounding by too many loud designs and bright colors…. It’s more about mental health. If everywhere you go all day is loud and bright, having a certain calming aesthetic that makes you feel good inside, can be a game changer. Mine is dark gamer girl. 😂
