This just might be my new favorite engine. I'm a big 844 follower, but I grew up with Pacific's, Northern's, Mikado's, Berkshire's and other 2 8 4's and 4 8 4's so this engine really seems to suit me better. And it runs like a top. Just think how much faster it would be if it didn't have to drag that MPI MP36PH-3S around.

Although she does have help from a Metra locomotive, most steamers like her have put our modern passenger diesel locomotives to shame in terms of hauling power. Amtrak would need at least two locomotives to pull that kind of consist.

The diesel isn’t helping, it’s there for the return trip. They have no way to turn the engine.

I love steam engines for their complexity, what into building them and the distinct sound of the whistle. I vaguely remember one I believe in New York City around 1956 or 57 when I was two or three years old. I also remember seeing what I believe was a Nickel Plate steam locomotive, maybe around 1958 or 1959, pass a grade crossing we waited at in our car pulling a freight train, in Cleveland on W. 114th St, just north of Detroit Ave. The track ran from Cleveland through Lakewood and headed west. It was not very far south of Lake Erie. It later was a Norfolk Western line and I don't know who it belongs to now, maybe CSX.
