Wow this is a violent transmission! Even the upshifts go through his body! I can’t believe it was setup like this for the 24hours back then, how did it survive? You can hear with every shift that engine and transmission are not completely rev matched. You did not experience this with older cars when the drivers had to rev match themselves. You also see this transmission kicking it out of gear around the 5:50 mark.

As one grow's with a fast car , engine sound becomes the primary enjoyment ( speed limits / camera's etc ), and in that regard a v10 or 5 cylinder ( NA / turbo ) are like musical instruments throughout the entire rev-range. At low rev's a v10 sound's like a 5 cylinder , mid-range is the song , max rev's the scream. I have experience of a Fiat 5 cylinder 20v T and at low rev's ~ remixed v8 burble , mid is a haunting song , max rev's it shriek's ( many time's pedestrian's head's spin to see wtf is that )......it's incredible the sound's metal , air , fluids , oil and exhaust can create , is my take.......Good vid.

What exactly causes that 'fluttering' sound at every gear change? It's specific to many racing cars from the 80s and 90s. Sounds like the gears themselves are vibrating from the engagement. Also, I'm curious to know what did they do to the F1 engine to make it more reliable for endurance racing (F1 engines of that era weren't known as particularly reliable)? Just rev limited them?

The whole transmission seems to have slight problems. Even the upshifts are super violent and you can see and hear that engine and transmission aren’t rev matched properly. But to be fair this is one of the very first „self matching“ transmissions where the car did it instead of the driver. All the cars where you had to rev match yourself are much smoother shifting, since the drivers know exactly what they are doing. I wonder if the transmission was that bad at the 24hours of Le Mans, to me it seems almost unbelievable they drove like that back then.
