I love Beck and I love this album!!! The song Dark Places in particular gets stuck in my head all day long. I wish I could meet Beck and shake his hand or give him a hug because since I've discovered him 5 years ago I've been able to use his music to keep me sane through the everyday bullshit life can be. He's got something to fit whatever mood I'm in from day to day and it never gets old to me. THAT is art. He's so underrated and underappreciated for his awesomeness, but that's what makes him awesome and as though he's my secret weapon, because he's not overblown or wrecked by over popularity. He's just BECK.

It must be so tiring for musicians, Beck included, to hear from fans every time they release a new album that it's not like x album and that they should make another album just like x album, or that they want x album era musician back. As a longtime Beck fan, and having seen him live, it's super annoying to hear people pining for Mellow Gold era Beck. It's as if musicians aren't allowed to grow as people as well. I think Hyperspace is a solid album, and Chemical is an especially stellar track. And for everyone getting upset over Pharrell's influence on the album, get over it. Beck didn't "sell out" because he used a trap beat on one song on the album. In my eyes, what makes Beck, Beck is that he truly is a chameleon of sound. Putting his entire discography on shuffle is more diverse and more wild of a ride than most of the Alt/Rock playlists curated by Spotify and Apple nowadays anyways.

Beck just has a different genre on every album. That has really allowed him to stay fresh for these 25+ years. He's not an artist where he has stayed the exact same style, drifted away from it for 2 or 3 albums where fans have complained that it doesn't sound like him. I love super hard rocking stuff (Mellow Gold, Odelay, Guero), his upbeat funk/pop/synth-pop (Midnite Vultures, Colors, Hyperspace), his mellower indie rock (Mutations, Modern Guilt), and his slower melancholy folk/rock (Sea Change (My favorite Beck album), and Morning Phase) and even his weirder pre-Mellow Gold stuff. Although One Foot in the Grave is a masterclass from him!
