That Primavera 2022 performance killed Tame Impala-Pavement was given so much love back they actually amplified it back to the audience and it showed

As much as I love Tame Impala, pavement won that night. They were definitely a highlight from Primavera.

Saw them live there in Dublin on the 2022 tour and what Stephen is saying there about some people might be cynical thinking that's a cash-in or whatever and that if you see them live you can decide if that's the case... That's one thing that was obvious to me. They were genuinely up there on that stage having a blast playing songs from their back catalogue together. Look at the shit Pixies get from the likes of ageist Pitchfork etc. whenever they offer up anything new! Nothing wrong with musicians/friends reuniting without any new music if that's what they decide. Pavement were always and will always be legit in the best possible way!

@@TaylorArtandFunIt’s pretty easy to infer that Malkmus is the one holding up any future studio projects. Not hating on him; it’s his prerogative. FWIW, in the very slim chance you read this, Stephen: so many of us would be very grateful to hear something new. I was disappointed in 2011 and I’m sad that the band is likely going to close up shop yet again. Can’t there be some compromise??

I'm not sure what people would expect with a new album. Take Stephen Malkmus 2001 album, delete two songs off it and add the best two songs from the first Preston School of Industry album, and you'd have your follow up to Terror Twilight. It's not like those first few Malkmus albums were any different than what he would have brought to more pavement albums. Also, there are soooo many b-sides, there are so many pavement songs out there.

Kinda weird seeing Malkmus feeling nervous playing after Tame Impala with their "fancy light shows and lots of hits". In my mind, they have the light show but Pavement tunes are a whole other league! I liked Tame Impala and their show but Pavement's first song, "Frontwards", was already much better than any Impala song. Than they played Gold Soundz and it was just a whole other different level.

I saw Pavement in Kansas City and it was incredible! I disagree with SM about a new Pavement record being cringe. The spirit of the band is alive! Why not record some of it? Ignore the haters and nerds. Thanks for the great tunes, Pavement!

ok no new album, that's too bad, but what about a live album for this tour called Jam Tangents. Triple vinyl would be nice and throw one new song live on there.

I saw them at a reunion show in Toronto in 2010(?). It was a pretty good show but it’s always hard to gauge how much Malkmus actually enjoys performing. For me, a show can go without a hitch but if the artists look like they aren’t into it, it kinda kills the mood for me. I think he was having fun. Also, I’d be super nervous to interview him. I know it’s kind of his thing or whatever, but it still feels like he’s like “okay let’s get this over with.” I’m always reminded of that one video where some guy says “so how’d you guys come up with the name ‘Pavement’?”, and Stephen just shook his head at him. I’d have felt like 2 inches tall after that lol.

If you're thinking of going now, I saw them last week and it was the best gig I've ever been to. Incredibly tight for a band that were so combative in their last iteration.

But that's SM. He is UNREADABLE. To pretty much anyone at any time, ever, 90s or now, he can appear A) exasperated and bored; B ) high on something; C) Just rolled out of bed and not an early afternoon person; D) f**king with you; E) possibly telling a joke or making a dig that you've missed or don't understand, or some mixture of those or something else.

I went to see Pavement live recently in London. Malkmus aside, honestly they're not great musicians. I get why for nostalgic reasons Pavement reformed but I'd rather see Malkmus playing with The Jicks again. As a band The Jicks are much more versatile and talented giving Malkmus the ability to stretch himself more as a guitarist and songwriter.

Agreed, honestly. Saw them in Denver a couple of months ago, and they were mostly good, though noticably sloppy at times. Worst part of the show was when they rushed "Rangelife" by at least 10 BPM. My spouse was super disappointed with that particular performance, and for good reason. I could tell Malkmus would have played it slower, but the band seemed ready to get it over with. Stephen's guitar playing was definitely a highlight overall.

he's not interested in doing that, that's completely legit. and if malkmus isn't feeling it, than the record shouldn't happen. I'm grateful we got a tour this great - I never expected to see stuff like Half a Canyon and Filmore Jive played live. It was a complete treat.

I respect him for not wanting to go back into the studio: their last album's studio recording was what helped break up the band, Stephen hated the process (and it's his least favorite Pavement album, as well). So best to enjoy whatever comes!
