I had a question, I’m installing a Yamaha F90 and Garmin 54cv on my boat. I want to run a NMEA 2000 network so I got the starter kit and interface cable. But I also have a round command link gauge (Tach) that I was going to install but I was wondering if I could run both the NMEA 2000 network and the gauge or if it’s one or the other? I’d like to run both since the NMEA 2000 will give me a little extra data than the command link gauge but I’ll most likely be using the Garmin for navigating so I’ll use the tach gauge when I’m navigating. Thanks!

The power should be introduced midpoint of the backbone to provide even distribution of power across any devices fitted

Tony Hewett if i have two units (lowrance hds 9 and 7 gen2s) and both have their own power cable allready connected to 12v, do i still have to conner the nema2000 power supply cable as well?
@tommyrq1806 ай бұрын
@@finnsnracks2085Yes. The NMEA backbone requires its own power. Current draw is negligible (especially compared to your Lowrance sonars!).
@trans-easternsolutions73162 жыл бұрын
Awesome video! If I wanted to add another NMEA device, such as a second Chart plotter, would I simply need to add an additional T-Connector to support the additional Garmin? Would it draw from the same power source that is connected it the NMEA backbone? Any idea if a Garmin GPSMAP will work with an Echomap on this NMEA network? Sorry for all the questions, but I am excited to connect my F250 to my new Garmin and hopefully tie in the old unit as well.
@astrodiver12 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes, just add another T and it will draw from the same power source. I don't have an answer as far as compatible units because I don't own those units.

ALSO, in my case I ordered the boat with analog gauges so the tilt and trim data was not connected. In the same area where the NMEA cable connect under cowl are (2) pink wires taped together with yellow tape. I removed the yellow tape, removed the caps on pink wires and connected them together. Now realtime tilt/trim angle data is sent thru the NMEA network also!
@bobbromm22695 жыл бұрын
If the pink wires for the trim are connected together, doesn't that also kill the analog trim gauge if installed?

Maybe this can help others: I found 3 un-used blanked plugs on my 2017 Yamaha 115. One was labeled 'SS'. One was labeled 'WW'. The correct one to connect the network cable to was an unlabeled WHITE plug that was capped off and had 2 wires going to it. It was located on the side closest to the transom.
@astrodiver15 жыл бұрын
Thanks ZASH! I'm sure that will be helpful. Mine is a '11 F70 with only 1 connector.

@@astrodiver1 I also just found right there in the same area (2) pink wires. One Male capped off and the other Female capped off with White connectors and both taped together with yellow tape. I removed the yellow tape, removed the caps and connected these two pink wires which now sends tilt and trim angle data thru the network to display on the simrad unit also!

Question-did you keep the power supplied to the Garmin chart plotter? Does the NMEA 2k supply power to the unit?
@astrodiver13 жыл бұрын
Good question. I only use the Garmin off the NMEA so it is powered by the NMEA backbone. The backbone is powered from a 12v accessory that I simply spliced into and use the acc switch to power the system on and off.

Noob question here - what are you actually powering, when you run the power to your backbone. I’m assuming the GPS was already wired? Or does the backbone now supply the power to the GPS?

@trentmiller75323 жыл бұрын
Do you have to have a separate wire for the fuel tank? (Kind of like a fuel level sending unit wire)
@astrodiver13 жыл бұрын
No. The Garmin requires you to enter the correct amount of fuel added to the tank and then it keeps track of fuel consumption via the ECU. It works great as long as you keep track of how much fuel you've added, then add that amount to the Garmin. Good question, I wondered the same until I hooked up the unit.
@trentmiller75323 жыл бұрын
@@astrodiver1 I have actually seen the ECU for the fuel tank. It may be separate from Garmin (which I love the chart plotters), but I know for sure I have seen the ECU for the digital display without having to do the Einstein math you are talking about. I’m gonna call Garmin and ask them why they made that part so difficult lol

@@trentmiller7532 My boat's fuel sending unit does go back into the bundle under the cowling but doesn't show up on the lowrance cable going into the NMEA. Great video and very informative. I have a Yamaha f100hp and a Garmin 65cv if i connect yamaha interface cable to my motor, to my Nmea 2000 and then to my Garmin would i get fuel flow and fuel remaining in the fuel tank . Thanks.
@astrodiver14 жыл бұрын
Yes you should, I don't see why not as long as your F 100 isn't more than 13-14 yrs old? What I do is manually set in the fuel amount after I gas up (if i add 20 gallons I'll conservatively input 19 gallons into the Garmin) after that it will keep track of fuel flow and level. I have filled and partially filled the tank a half dozen times since and it's been fine and agreeing with the analog fuel gauge on the boat. The Garmin tach and the analog tach have begun to disagree lately (by a few hundred rpm) not sure what's going on with that.

Now can I also hook up Kicker 9.9 motor to my Chart Plotter/Fish Finder ?
@jackd6684 жыл бұрын
I recently replaced the analog tach with a digital "command link" tach. Wondering if the plug that I used on the F90 would be the same one needed to connect to the backbone? In other words, do I have a choice of using either the digital tach or the NMEA connection to the chartplotter, but not both?

Does the male plug on the motor end only use 2 wires? Are they blue and white or some other color?

Ok, so its funny when you call Garmin they only have half the info needed. then calling my Yamaha/Bennington dealer they say i need a Command Link and gave me a part number. Apparently from this good video I dont need that, Wondering it its the same hookups on my 2018 F300 (i have a NEMA Echomap Garmin) So how did you figure all this out?
@astrodiver13 жыл бұрын
You would need the F300 to NMEA adapter. A NMEA backbone kit (just the wires that connect tied in devices ) Then just the NMEA wire to your Garmin. You should be good. The NMEA system is just a bridge between your devices, engine,sonar,GPS, ect. It simply connects them.

Great video! I also have a f70 and was wondering if you had to add a temperature sensor to the motor for your It to show the temperature? Or is it factory?
@astrodiver15 жыл бұрын
eric jensen, Thanks! I have a 2011 F-70 and the temperature sensor works by just plugging in the engine NEMA cable. As far as I know every F70 after 2006 should work the same.

Does it show the hours?
@KJ4SQP5 жыл бұрын
You usually dont want to power a nmea 2k system off of battery you usually want it keyed. Reason being is any sensors or anything that uses power from the backbone will constintally draw power. I don't think anything on this system is actually using power the echomap uses its own power cable and the engine cable should be sending data from the ECM
@astrodiver15 жыл бұрын
I agree about hooking up to the battery directly, some components like a wind sensor could constantly draw. In my case the unit is disconnected and brought into the house (rain ruined my last unit) and the master Battery disconnect stays off unless the boat is running. I "temple-larry" as I like to say hooked up direct to the battery but it's now on a switch circuit. Thanks Aubry!

Thanks for posting. Does the 54cv also show your engine hours? I just ordered a 54cv and plan to do same setup with my f150. I don’t have an hour meter now and was hoping that data comes through to the unit.
@astrodiver15 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. I checked out some forums and it seems possible on some of the more expensive units by going to "Gauges-numbers-then customize." I'm learning that all the Yamaha F series connectors are not the same so maybe the 150 will output that info but I have yet to find a menu for it on the 54cv. Please let me know if it works for you!
