Such an erudite man, I could listen to him talking about virtually any topic for hours on end. At the end of the interview though, I got the sad feeling that he's not really happy with his rise to fame following the HBO series. Success is a double-edged blade that's for sure.

I think what she wanted to George to say when she asked about female roles in history was for him to "admit" that his representation of women in history is unrealistic and they were mostly powerless. Then the press could have lots of provocative quotes implying that George said all women in history were useless and strong women never happened. George agreed with her just enough to placate her constant insistence without giving her what she most wanted. A-Star to him.

Agree with you completely. Also just to add that often the husband would be blamed and punished for their wife's crimes. And that a woman could hide behind being "a woman" in order to twist events, or to plot. Like Elizabeth Woodville and Margaret Beaufort did. She might've been a "feminazi", and only wanted to prove some kind of point about women being constantly raped and trodden upon and overlooked for thousands and thousands of years. History is a little more complex than that. Wish people would realise that more in all honesty.

Victoria Cariad No kidding. History IS fact, but we have to remember a lot of what happened in the past was driven by human emotions, experiences, beliefs, etc. which were just as complex back then as they are today. I think history is really a reflection of today, like the old saying, "to understand your future, first understand your past." It's a foible of the human mind to try to bring a dichotomy to things that CANNOT be a dichotomy. What I mean by that is most people tend to think of things as black and white, what I've come to call immature thinking. Life isn't a dichotomy, history isn't a dichotomy and certainly cannot be black and white. When I read about Joan of Arc, Cleopatra, etc. I think of them as people, not as a figure. Yes, Joan of Arc was a strong willed woman who wanted to save her kin, but she also was batshit insane thinking angels spoke to her that she would be doing God's work. Yes she obviously was an amazing woman, but she was human. She had faults, she had those feelings, and it drove her to do what she thought was right. This is why I don't put a dichotomy on things, there is ALWAYS much more to a story than simple black and white thinking.

I don't know what you're smoking Arkantos. This interviewer did an excellent job and asked compelling questions in a way that provoked thoughtful responses. Clearly, she admired the books and the show but she also asked some challenging questions, and intelligently. This was no softball interview. That's what made it interesting, IMO.

He's a brilliant writer. Not certain that I admire him as a person. I obviously don't know him but I think a loved writer is someone like jk rowling or cs Lewis, whereas a good writer is George r r Martin. but he's in it to write and I don't think anyone is successful because they care for how someone feels about them lol. I find him to be a realist and a very perceptive intelligent guy. Just picked up his book last night, went through HBO series many times can't wait for it to come out.

A manipulator who was rumored to have had incestual relations with her brother Caesar Caligula, has her husband(her Uncle Caesar Cladius) killed so her unstable son(Nero) able to become Caesar. He killed her shortly afterwards. She was considered one of the most powerful women in Roman history.

The way that life itself works (evolution, technology, genes and memes etc) is far more interesting than any magic. It's all so very complex, yet able to be explained in great detail. Magic can't be the most underrated part of reality, because it is not and never will be a part of reality. The definition of magic is "The art of producing illusions as entertainment". Illusions are things that appear to be real, but aren't. They are not part of reality. If we had "real" magic today, we wouldn't call it magic, it would simply be normal energy that occurs in reality. Shooting fire from your hand would just be called "Producing fire" and how it is achieved would be written in great details in textbooks throughout the world.

That's a very modern view. Things that couldn't be explained have been part of reality for centuries up until now. They mostly aren't anymore, you're right. But your dismissal of it kind of proves my point that it is underrated. I'm a bit sad about the whole development, even though I understand the necessity and still want the world to keep going forward.

I can't presume to know what goes on in GRRM's head, but I'd wager he's probably a bit pissed by having to make a comparison to Tolkien in every single interview he's in. The two are far too different, IMO. Personally, I think comparing his works to Robert Jordan's or Steven Erickson's is much more fitting, but that does indeed narrow down the number of people who'll know WTF he's on about :P

When they're done, they're done. That's the bottom line. I, for one, don't want him to try and rush these books. They are the most riveting, engaging, amazing books I've ever read, and hope he takes his time to make sure they are in line with how he originally envisioned them. So STFU and wait.
