How do you mount switch machines with roadbed so thick? Thanks!

In addition to the normal dust control on your saw I recommend setting up a couple of room air filters. I was cutting some dusty material and the dust was so thick I literally could not see across the room. In addition to being dangerous to breathe it is an explosion hazard. I bought a box type window fan about 20 inches diameter and wired it to the fan inlet side. When I turned it on the room cleared in a couple of minutes.

I'm was in a club here in Northern Indiana and we used a little different spline method. we cut 2/4 inch wide strips from long pieces of pine lumber and did the spline about the same as you did with the homosote. We had 3 strips of spline with spacers inbetween each spline at 8 inch spacing. Then we cut risers with the spacing to fit the spline glue-up. This let us raise the track base to what ever we wanted. I cut the homosote on my table saw (yes it is very messy and I cut it outside and had a gray yard for a few days. We cut the homosote with a 45 degree sides so it would ook like track bed. To curve the homosote we cut many gaps in each 4' piece about 1/2 way through the width and had the slots from each side to be betwen the slot from the other side. This made the homosote very flexible.

Great use of cross connect wire, I have been using it for years.

Anyone watching this for the 1st time and have never worked with Homasote allow me to underscore about 1000 times the statements regarding dust creation while cutting this material. As a former tile setter for 11 years this stuff is hazardous to your respiratory system extremely quick not to mention the messy dust. Even cutting outdoors can be quite problematic. This is not something to toy with. Otherwise have a blast. I can't wait to get my layout going. Thanks.

Homasote is a paper product that can readily absorb moisture, The newer 440 designation is treated for this. When leaving it basically exposed to the air it should be sealed on all edges or it might bloom like MDF in humid environments. Its official use is sound blocking and the max humidity is 90%rh. No problem for conditioned spaces. In unconditioned spaces it grows and shrinks with ambiendent air moisture.

That’s good to know. I was considering this design until I read your comment. Living near Houston, TX would not be good for Homasote. Maybe that’s why the big box stores don’t cary this product here.

Here in Blighty (UK) this Homasote is called Sundeala and is priced so high, like £70 a 8X4ft sheet. I think I will stick to cork

When I have to cut Homasote, I use a long metal straightedge and a snap-off blade razor knife. Make repeated passes with the knife and it will cut the Homasote cleanly and with little dust. However, since Homasote is a compressed paper product, be warned that it will dull blades quickly! Other than that, Homasote is a great product! There is a video on KZbin about how it's made. It's really interesting!

I'm using your benchwork techniques (3×8 grids, etc.) and trying the homasote splines. I'm having trouble getting a curve with less than 48" radius without the homasote breaking. I tried to place the first spline by placing nails in the benchwork as guides. But the homasote would break before I got to the desired 36" radius. I'll try screwing 3 pieces together then curving. Am iImissing something? What other suggestions do you have? Thanks. Tom in ATL.

I noticed you are using open benchwork. what is the material being used to connect the open areas from one roadbed to the other? It looks like rosin core paper. do you then plaster this in preparation for scenery? Please tell me the process of this terrain. thanks Bob
