Newport News Shipbuilding has launched John F. Kennedy (CVN 79), the U.S. Navy’s newest nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, into the James River. With the aid of six tugboats, Kennedy was guided down the river about a mile from Dry Dock 12, where the ship has been under construction, to the shipyard’s Pier 3. There, the ship will undergo additional outfitting and begin its testing program three months ahead of its original schedule.

I was aboard USS Forrestal when she came out of her dry dock at the PNSY after SLEP. A lot of minor work was needed before we left the shipyard for the trip south to Mayport. The ship only had a very small crew contingent aboard while at PNSY. The move south was interesting because they loaded the flight decks and hangar bays with crew automobiles so they didn't have to drive them to the new port. We laughed that the Navy was now in the ferry business.

Yeah that would be great. I was really hoping that with this new class they would stop naming them after presidents period. Then they name the whole class after one…Not that Kennedy isn’t deserving but there’s plenty more war heroes and historical battles that deserve to have and keep having ships named after them. They hopefully started that again with the Doris Miller. I’m holding out hope there will be another Midway and Coral Sea before we end up with the USS James K Polk and it’s plank owner Al Bundy who once scored 4 touchdowns in a single game.

Three questions: 1.Was the power plant operational at this time? 2. If not, how did they provide power for the air conditioning and lights? 3. Why not use propellor pods similar to those on cruise ships now? The cruise ships are equal in size to an aircraft carrier, so why not use them?
