was real real disappointed when they hired Grimes as offensive coordinator, couldn't believe it! Trust in coach Lance, we'll see how he handles it, but the play calling was horrendous. Hard to have a game plan when the QB was stinking it up so bad also. Just all around bad night and hard to see the Jayhawks improve on last year at this point

Agreed and this is maybe Altmyer's best game ever for the Illini. Big pressure and he made no mistakes. If "Mistake Free" is the Illini strategy for the season then I'd say this is a huge step forward. Last weeks game was almost irrelevant by contrast. This is a team that easily dealt with us last year. Next week will be almost as irrelevant as last week. The 1st real test will be in Nebraska in 2 weeks. Even when they aren't the team that terrified others from the 50s to the 90s anyone goign to Lincoln knows it will be hard.

They ruled it as a miffed punt so Illinois never gained possession and then it was knocked into the end zone by a Kansas player so when Illinois recovered the muffed punt it was a touchback

As a Kansas fan in the stadium what an embarrassing performance from that offense. Credit to Illinois for playing a great defensive game. I think that punt muff rule needs to change. No way you should be able to fumble the punt and get 20 extra yards from it should be a saftey.

It’s not the same as any touchback. I agree with op. A muffed punt should be treated as a fumble since it’s a live ball. If a quarterback fumbled the ball at the 7 yard line and then recovered it down on a knee in the end zone that would definitely be a safety. If they allow this, then what is stopping a player from “muffing” the ball into the end zone to prevent the punter from pinning them on the 2 yard line? They don’t allow players to push or kick the ball into the end zone. There have to be consequences for mistakes in football. They should be forced to get the ball back past the goal line if they let a live football into their own end zone. They can’t reward a touchback for bad play like this. This is a loophole that should be filled. Should’ve been a safety. That completely shifted the energy of the game.
