I’m continuing to enjoy your videos. Well produced. I’m continuing on my own Tamar river odyssey right now. 18’ mini Herreschoff type boat.

"I love that moment when the engine goes off". I heard myself saying out loud! "Yes!" It's indeed the best moment. Great trip again. I sailed near Plymouth during the UKLA Nationals a few years back. Amazing blue waves.

Beautiful spot to overnight in Salcombe, I think the old Mersey ferry that belonged to the ICC was once moared there

Salcombe → Plymouth is a lovely passage on a day like that. I do prefer paper charts to these new fangled electronic things as all that can happen is your pencil sharpener goes rusty 😉 Looking forward to your next video. Sandy

The tablet over heating and sunlight issues have beset me. Did have a Garmin 451 mounted on the boat and when that packed in bought the cheap Dragonfly from Raymarine - not a patch on the Garmin, but good for passages and then revert to the tablet for entry to harbours etc. Having a Mark II, I have built a platform over the engine compartment to give a flat surface for cooking, charts etc. - also where Dragonfly is mounted. The chart plotters are much better is sunlight and heat. Peter Thomas as CC (as was) could never explain why the engine compartment was sloped - made it a totally useless surface. Nice video, will be heading west myself early August, from Exmouth, to have a look in Plymouth Sound - watching with anticipation.

mmmm... I might have accidentally bought a Garmin plotter when in Plymouth. Next week is all about messing about in Plymouth sound and going up the Tamar. Thanks for watching.

Thank you so much for your videos - I always learn a lot from them & I'm encouraged to be more adventurous in my own boat when I see what you achieve in such a small craft. Could you let me know what the wind App is that you are using at about 5:12 mins in?

So glad you enjoy them. Thanks for watching. The app is ‘Windy’ the free version is pretty good but there is a paid version that gives you more resolution. More importantly, it shows most of the simulation models.

What a cracking day! Bit of advice from a Rugged hardware guy. Most non-rugged stuff will overheat if left in the sun. Some of the water cooled smartphones (Yes they make them, OnePlus, Samsung) are better but they all will just shut down if too hot, in order to protect themselves. Best thing is to keep it our of the sun if possible. If its overheating in the cabin or if only out for a short time then there may be something wrong with the tablet. Often this is down to a latent issue like a short of some nature and can be caused by anything from a corroded USB port (or whatever the ipad uses) to shorts on the main circuit board. Maybe have a look at that and give it a clean with rubbing alcohol and a cotton bud or a gentle scrape with somethuing like a toothbrush. I've seen loads of consumer kit fail like this. You'd be amazed how hot it gets behind the windscreen of a couriers van and on a boat the sun can get absorped by the metal casings easily. The sea will get most electronics eventually. I use a cheap chinese Rugged Android tablet that has been pretty good and it has a rubber cover over the USB port but the screen is not as bright as an iPad. Some of the tablets from Oukitel are pretty good though and are water proof but of course its all Android not IOS.

Many thanks Dave. I've bitten the bullet and bought a chartplotter for the boat. i'll be using my IPad as well but mainly inside the cabin and for backup. and yes... it was a cracking day :)

Hi thanks for these videos they are great. Can you tell me how you shoot them with what seems a fisheye type lens?
@Morningvicar

I use a 360 camera; it records a complete 360 "sphere" using two overlapping wide angle lenses. I can then decide which part of that view i want to render to a flat view.

Nice little trip, shame about the iPad but I hear about the same problem over and over. I guess there's a reason why Raymarine, Garmin etc keep churning out their plotters. There are a ton of Raymarine C80's on eBay that would probably do the job perfectly well without spending too much!

Loving your videos, especially as I am thinking if downsizing from Westerly Duo to Shrimper to better explore locally. Just wondering what camera you use, it looks to be stabilised and tracks by itself, or is there a cameraman onboard..William

Thanks for watching, I use a 360 camera, it just captures everything and then I choose how it pans and zooms whilst editing.

Love your videos. Just one question: do you use a tiller pilot or other form of autohelm. Just curious as otherwise you must do an awful lot of hand steering.
@Morningvicar
@Morningvicar 4 ай бұрын
Hi thanks for watching I have a tiller pilot, but never really use it. In fact, it wasn’t onboard for the trip to Plymouth. I do steer a lot, but on longer passages try to balance the sails and leave the tiller locked. The tiller pilot will be making more of an appearance soon though.

What on earth is all this" pressure" gobblygook about? Is "wind" too difficult to pronounce? Reading the YBW forum it seems that iPads have a bit of a track record when it comes to overheating. Android devices seem to fare rather better.
@Morningvicar
@Morningvicar 4 ай бұрын
Sorry if my atempts to not repeat the word “wind” is annoying you 😊. Yes I think Androids have less of a problem, cheaper too. I’ve bought a new chart plotter though so that should sort the issue out. It talks to the Ipad as well so I’m hoping for the best of both worlds.
