With the heat from the fire surrounded by the weight of the water in the boiler, the firebox undergoes intense and changing pressures when a steam locomotive is in operation. As a result, the side sheets of the firebox need to be in top form to withstand these fluctuating pressures. In this installment of The Road to Revival, we take a look at what it takes to renew the firebox side sheets and how to repair these massive steel chambers! #StripeHype

#844, Big Boy, 1309, and several others they had to do the same thing. If the Firebox is rotten you cut everything out and replace it. Several of these sheets have leaking staybolts that is a sign you have to replace it. Good luck with the rebuilt.

For some years I was a volunteer with the SS JOHN W BROWN, one of only two intact and operational Liberty Ship-class emergency cargo vessels out of 2710 built during World War II. We drydock the ship every five years, and most times we have to replace a fair number of hull rivets and sometimes plating. (We got lucky the last time). We have had a very difficult time finding qualified riveters. Where do historic steam locomotive shops such as Nashville Steam find their riveting crews?

When do you predict she’ll be fixed up? Also, I saw 576 when it was on static display, she was coved in bird poop. I’m glad you guys have decided to fix her up. On top of that, I really love the sound of the whistle

This same work is being done on #3985 all the fireman side sheets are bad and the flue sheets are also bad all of will have to be taken out and replaced.
