Nappa seemed like a slightly better person than Vegeta, one that became a completely rotten apple under a negative influence. Unlike Vegeta, he wanted to resurrect Raditz. Unlike Vegeta, he was outraged about the destruction of Planet Vegeta and mass murder of the Saiyans. Unlike Vegeta, he seemed cool with being considered a hero on Arlia (it's anime filler, but still). Of course, as soon as the guy in charge told him that he's being stupid, he changed his mind. If he trule cared about the Saiyan race, he wouldn't have done that. When he kills Dodoria, he flat out says he "doesn't care about his race, parents or planet". The reason he was crying when he died was because Freeza had shredded his pride and ego, and he deserved all of it considering the senseless slaughter he had done over the course of his life in pursuit of immortality and power. Hell, even on Namek he's killing innocent Namekians after they comply with his demands.

You know, after rewatching a bit of the series, I realized that Nappa is actually kind of a tragic character. In the end of Goku v.s. Napa fight, Goku struck Nappa so hard that he paralyzed him. He practically severed his spine. Vegeta WAS going to let Nappa live if he simply calms down and just retire while Vegeta takes his place. But Nappa wanted to vent. He went after Gohan and Krillin thus forcing Goku to use Kioken to strike Nappa so hard, that he broke his back. Vegeta, upon witnessing this, had enough of it. He is also not going to keep babying him if it is going to lead to being disabled.

People call Vegeta disloyal for taking Nappa's life, but Nappa disobeyed a direct order from Vegeta who told him to stop fighting Goku and return to his side since he wasn't successful in fighting Goku, making them look weak. I remember so well watching this scene as a kid with my older brother in 2007. Our reaction to this was exactly the same as that of Goku, krillin and Gohan. That's the reason both of us loved Vegeta. He was so complicated and unpredictable. This made the series so entertaining and interesting. Without his character it would have been quite boring.

I see a lot of people asking how Vegeta could do that. When Freeza killed Vegeta on Namek Vegeta told Goku everything. He told him how Freeza took him away from his father and threatened to kill him if he didn’t follow orders. Vegeta said the Freeza made him the way he was. Pure Evil. That was one of the deepest moments in DBZ in my opinion. How Vegeta straight up opened up and begged Goku to kill Freeza.

Nappa’s death was so satisfying. After all that hell he caused and the brutal ways he took down Tien and Piccolo, this was fitting for him. All he had to do was step back like Vegeta said. Instead, he tried to continue bullying Gohan and Krillin. His bully tactics were ultimately his own downfall; he wouldn’t have been incapacitated by Goku if he wasn’t a vile POS. Love it lol

Vegeta at least had a goal to become a super saiyan and eventually kill Frieza. Frieza just wants to be feared by everyone and kills his own men on a whim to remind them of their place or just because. Vegeta is pretty damn evil but mellow over time, Frieza is pure evil and remains so after several hundred episodes.

My interpretation of this scene is that Vegeta was trying to shake the morale of Goku and instill fear in him. We can see that the act of killing a comrade did shake Goku up, which pleased Vegeta. Not to mention that Goku can sense energy too, so he probably knew the power behind that blast would have easily destroyed him too. That's when Goku knew that he was going to need every second of his Kaioken to count.

In all of the entire dragonball universe, this is by far the most fucked up yet honorable yet fucked up piece plot to ever be made. I can understand vegeta killing him for being a disappointment. I can understand vegeta supposedly doing this in a way to give him a warrior’s death, especially as a saiyan who wouldn’t be able to fight crippled forever. Makes sense. But it’s like, he really sat there, threw his childhood friend/squadmate/last surviving saiyan member of the bloodline that he’s supposed to lead one day... into the air, charged up and then laughed as he obliterated him. The transition from evil vegeta to good vegeta almost goes seamlessly because this is probably the most evil thing that any anime character could possibly do. Literally murdered his own friend, for enjoyment. There was no motive but enjoyment there. Nappa didn’t even wanna die and vegeta just mercilessly executed him. I almost don’t remember it even being this brutal lol.
