After eight days in Normandy, Baker's most difficult test as a squad leader is imminent. The Defense of Carentan must hold at Hill 30.
The Battle of Bloody Gulch took place on June 13, 1944. U.S. paratroopers from the 101st Airborne Division, who had recently captured the town of Carentan, had to defend against a German counterattack aimed at retaking it. Losing Carentan would put the Utah and Omaha beachheads in jeopardy.
