Keep in mind that all hair, including beard hair, is DEAD matter. You can't "nourish" it (other than in vampire and zombie movies, have you ever seen the dead eat?), and you can't "stimulate" it to do anything. You can still lubricate it, you can coat it with an oily layer to prevent it from drying ("hydrate" it), and you can promote certain chemical reactions with the substances in hair, such as when you discolor it, dye it, or straighten it chemically (which is further proof that hair is dead - no living tissue would survive the harsh chemicals used in these salon procedures). Any other thing is chemically and biologically impossible. The outermost layer of skin (called the "epidermis") is also dead, but beneath that first layer, the skin is alive, and this includes hair follicles. So, you CAN nourish and stimulate the live layer of the skin (the "dermis") and the hair follicles in many ways to do many things, but not the hair or beard directly. Although I'm white-skinned with Caucasian features, I do have significant African ancestry in my family (being mixed-race is the norm here where I'm from), and it surfaces in my curly, wiry beard. Hence my interest in a channel for black men's beards and in tips for this type of beard, which is practically the same as mine. I already have a thick beard, but I have great difficulty in keeping it from tangling and becoming unkempt. I don't think that a dermaroll would work for me, sorry, because the thickness and irregularity of my beard would cushion out any significant pressure or stimulation from the roll and prevent it from reaching the dermis, where it could possibly act. I'm also skeptical about hyaluronic acid or any other substance that acts in the dermis because of the difficulty in reaching the skin beneath my beard in significant amounts and being absorbed into the dermis. (I have an academic background in the biomedical field, too.) A final word about *minoxidil:* it's actually an *anti-hormone.* Some men have in some areas of the skin follicles that are hypersensitive to masculine hormones, especially a testosterone derivative called *dihydrotestosterone,* or DHT for short. DHT normally stimulates hair growth in the follicles, but if these are hypersensitive, they're going to keep spewing out hair too fast, before it's ripe, and it will break and fall while it's still microscopic in length and thickness. So, bald men and those with patchy beards don't necessarily have fewer follicles or inactive ones: they have hyperactive ones. Minoxidil partially inhibits DHT's action and lets the follicles "breathe" and produce hair at normal rates, without the hormone's overstimulation. This is why you get mixed reports about minoxidil for patchy beards: if the cause is hypersensitive follicles, it will work like a charm, but if the cause is really too few or inactive follicles, it won't work.
