This was my mates first car. He also had a Toyota Starlett around the same time which I felt was similar to drive. I love simple Japanese cars.

Yes, well, you have seen the Starlet review, I imagine! The Charade was a bit easier to drive thanks to power steering and also much quicker thanks to the 1.3 engine, but I suppose that they are a similar type of car.

Rear electric windows MR Lloyd one does like that on small cars. It's a very handsome little car, I did see the odd one in the 90s pretty rare even then.

Oh sir, we like driving around in decadent luxury in such a small car, don't we? They weren't exactly common even when new, this one was a great privilege to drive.

It's a real shame Daihatsu pulled out of the UK. I think they're fantastic, they were always quirky almost a bit like a Citroen. But Daihatsu's were always incredibly reliable, I know lots still love their Fourtracks. I think the Charade and Sirion were incredibly underrated. Another stellar review Sir.

Yes, very unusual car, typical of Daihatsus of the time. I would absolutely love to try an Applause too, although they are exceptionally rare. By this stage, they were owned by Toyota, so their reliability is absolutely no surprise.

When i was a young teenager around 14 15 years old . A mother of a friend of my back than bought a charade like this one. It was already an older car back than. And they bought it for very little money. I found it very sporty back than. Now years and years later ( i’m in my 30s now) I saw her driving! In the same charade ! They still have the car! Man that car must be very good! And payed his money back!

That Charade must have been kept in a garage, sir, as even this one has some rust issues (although they have been tackled now). Probably not very many more of these left over in the Netherlands.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting no sir. No garage no drive way. Just street parking. Almost nobody does have a own driveway or garage here in the west of Netherlands. There is just not enough space for that, ( that’s why it will be a big problem when everyone have to go electric because charging). But I couldn’t believe my eyes. And i’m sure that it’s the same car. I was very young when i sat in that charade . And indeed i never see any Charades driving around, this is the only one.

Back in the 90s this would probably not have been a car I'd have considered but looking back perhaps I should have. The engine was probably more advanced than many of its contemporaries and the interior looks to be the right balance of functional and quirky. Being a high slec car with sports seats and a rev counter is a nice touch. Today I think being white with a trail blazer style rear reflector makes this car look very 80s retro which I like very very much indeed. I bet the 3 cylinder turbo is an interesting car too and would be interesting to compare against a modern 3 cylinder turbo which has become very much the norm these days.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, quite an advanced engine for a small car in 1993. This one was certainly very lively and handled quite well, although the brakes were a bit scary. The white on white combination does quite suit it, very typical of the era.

You are very correct about the 3 cylinder pioneers. They became popular in the Irish Republic in the late 1970s early 1980s and every model was a 3 cylinder, with those tall little wing mirrors that all Toyotas, Mazdas and Datsuns used to have. They were even rallied with the 3 cylinder engine.

Goodness, an actual Charade, one that was imported to the US! Only eight western states were the market for Daihatsu at the time. This is the Charade that I remember! Full electric windows! Eccentric controls! And one you overlooked Joseph, the digital clock was just above the centre console, below the ashtray! Hazzard switch, so period Japanese! I do know that Daihatsu was briefly in the US market, and only in the Western part of the country, why, I'm not sure, I do not remember. A shame Daihatsu was not sold throughout the US, it might have been more successful than it actually was at the time! Very low mileage for being close to thirty years old! Thank you very much for the review of this Charade Joseph!

Yes, a real Charade, this is probably the one many people who grew up in the 1990s will remember over here as well. We like those eccentric controls, sir. I did notice the clock, but sometimes I don't necessarily point everything up on the walkaround section if it is really obvious.

The Thinking Lady's or Gentleman's Vauxhall Nova. Very rare, even when new unless you lived near to a main Dealer. Owners were very loyal and came back again and again. 90 bhp in a Supermini was almost Hot Hatch territory, even 1.4s didn't have much more than 80bhp at the time. I know that the Fiat Uno 1.4 had only 75 bhp. The previous 3 cylinder models seemed to sip fuel but the 4 cylinder 1.3s did attract more buyers with the promise of some power. GTti was iconic, one to keep. Wonderful find thank you sir.

My favourite supermini of the late 1980s/early 1990s. I just loved the styling of these. So modern compared to Fiesta mark 2s and Micra K10s of the time. Velour seats too iirc. Shame we can't discuss the forbidden fuel version as it has quite a unique engine.
