It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive KZbin experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong...
This time, as we test a 1994 Peugeot 306 1.4 XL, we drive through the Fens, hint at Festival of the Unexceptional coverage, give incorrect information about wheel trims, find a non-original gear lever and waffle on about very little of any importance at all. Nothing untoward, then...

Excellent review MR Lloyd, the 306 still looks great today, I'd like a pre face-lift GTi-6 in Miami Blue Metallic or that rather nice shade of grey Peugeot did in the 90s.

In 1993 the Peugeot 306 went straight to the top of the class for comfort, ride and handling. Much sharper than the Citroën ZX, Vauxhall Astra, Ford Escort, Rover R8 and Volkswagen Golf. The 306 was just like a scaled up version of the 106 launched 2 years previously with a fine range of powerplants and a very wide model and trim package to suit every demand from budget conscious basic to luxurious and sporty performance versions and an attractive capacious estate as well as fine paint choices. A masterstroke by Peugeot that was not properly replaced by the unimaginative 307.

@lloydvehicleconsulting 8 ай бұрын
Yes sir, the 207 and 307 were really not very good. Not very good at all... The 306 has a much more friendly character about it, and is essentially a larger evolution of the 205 platform, like the 106 is a smaller evolution of it. I prefer the R8 Rover 200 (of course), but it was interesting to have a go in this well preserved example.

The 1.1 litre engine options must have been other Europe markets only. From memory the smallest engine on these 306s was indeed the 1.4 for the UK. I never much liked these very much when they were first launched. A little too similar to the 205 - a point already raised. However, I did like the interior styling with it's curvy dashboard. The motoring press in the 1990s really liked the 306. I performed extremely well against the Rover 200 series, Vauxhall Astra and VW Golf. I much preferred the Citroen ZX over this but I did grow to like the 306 over time.

Yes, I have never seen a 1.1 version of these, so probably not for our market. The styling is very handsome, if similar to the 205. I did not really like these particularly when they came out either, but they seem a lot more appealing to me now. Thank you for watching, sir!

Great car Joseph, and very rare now in this early spec with no airbags, no handle on the boot release and the original grille badge without the chrome trim surround. The wheel trims are indeed correct for an XL, and this car was built at Ryton. The early top XT models had the extra luxury of a velour covered upper glovebox! Something i find quite appealing.

Yes, these early ones are extremely rare now, aren't they? The lack of rev counter really does point to the era that these were initially produced!

My own 1997 306 { of the turbocharged genus that you don't want to talk about !} has a strange electrical anomaly. If I don't wipe the door lock when it's raining {both remotes having long since died}, a relay trips and the instruments stop working. I then remove fuses 25 and 28, replace the same undamaged fuses and all is ok again. Am on 83, 600 and something miles now and will never sell it. I'm getting a regular 54 MPG in spite of having tuned it up a bit with the usual fuel pump, air filter and exhaust capers. Have a set of coilovers, a lowered back axle, braided brake lines and a full polybush suspension kit, plus rattle your teeth engine mounts, at least until the speedo hits 40 MPH.

Don't know if he's still around but you have PSA's Jean Baudin to thank for the legendary ride and handling of the 205,306,405,406 and probably many other cars of the era. I had a sluggish 1.9D ZX for a while that was a hoot to drive on twisty lumpy country roads, trying to keep momentum around the corners.

Great cars, I was the proud owner of a very early K reg 1.6 XT in steel grey probably one of the best handling family cars I think the steering was perfectly weighted it would be considered heavy by today’s standards even though it was assisted. At the time the insurance groups were low on these. Only downsides of mine were a heavy clutch pedal and trim rattles. I still fancy a GTI6 or S16 and I have a particular soft spot for the Phase 1 cars like the one in the video. Interestingly I didn’t have a sunroof on my XT maybe the spec changed from 1993.

The owner absolutely loves his 306, and I do understand why. It behaved itself very well on the way to Festival of the Unexceptional and back, no reason why you can't use one of these every day, as he does. I like the look of the Phase 3 cars, but it's all down to personal preference in any case. Thank you very much indeed for watching and commenting.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting: You’re very right, my friend. I absolutely adore my 306, though I often have abuse my way for using it every day. I look after it meticulously, it wants for nothing at all. I protect the undercarriage for the winter months, it’s waxoyled throughout and in the areas that are hard to access. I’ll do what I want with her as she’s my car, I’d never let her go as she means too much to me. She’s my first car and my one true love.

My mother had a P reg one of these, with that annoying key pad thing! (Not mentioning the fuel but as a District Nurse I can excuse it!) It was that red colour too, I think it was the largest car she ever owned she had 3 205s and a 206, sadly no longer with us but she loved her Peugeots.

Yes, the keypad was incredibly irritating, and had been discontinued by 1999. Fortunately, this car is too early to have one of those. A lot of 205 owners continued with a 306, I think.

I have a really good (no rust, full history etc..) 306 XSI with only 132.000KM (82.000 Miles) on the clock in my garage. It has the 8V 121 HP engine. There is no need to change the gear at almost any speed. That is totally funny.... go in 5th at about 20mi and speed it up to 122mi without changing gears... A great little blast from the past. I love it and will never give it away (.... I also own one of these [totally crazy] 106 GTI ...). The 1.1. TU 1 is boring in the 306 but relatively funny in the 106 :-)

I owned an S Reg 306, 1998 with 1.6 engine. Very low mileage , from main dealer. Constant problem with airbag warning lights and the associated electrical connectors under the front seats. Also the rear wash wipe, in the spindle, which you highlighted was very poorly designed and caused the motor to rust and fail. It was an easy DIY car to maintain.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 11 ай бұрын
Those problems with the airbag lights seem to be quite common in cars of the late 1990s and early 2000s for some reason. I am sure that these are easy to look after!

Thanks mate, she’s my car. Yes, replaced the 309 in 1993. Interesting fact, the 309 wasn’t initially intended to be a Peugeot (nor called a 309), it was initially intended to be a Talbot “Arizona”. Then Peugeot took the design and called it the 309. Leaving Talbot to burn out until 1994.

The early 306s were so badly made. Good job they looked great and drove even better. I remember spending 1500 on one after 3 year's and low mileage and 8 months later another 800 and that was replacing some of the bits that were replaced a few months earlier. However. The ride and handling was a revelation & the Clarion Stereo was great. I'd love one today. D Turbo's rarer that GTI-6 and Rallye so maybe the 90 BHP oil burner is the one to lust after. Where did that gearknob come from?
@lloydvehicleconsulting
