It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive KZbin experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong...
The Rubbish Mechanic's channel: / leadedstar
This time, we examine a 1995 Rover 620 SLi Manual, although why we are filming one when we covered another 620 in Tweed Jacket Reviews last year, I do not really know! Get ready for a working electric aerial, a beige interior, some rather snazzy wheels, a surprisingly nice driving experience and no oil leaks whatsoever. Nothing untoward, then...
As an independent vehicle consultant, I take potential buyers through the whole car buying process from choosing a make and model to a vehicle handover and road tax. In addition to information on this service, I also have a selection of written and video reviews of cars that I have owned, hired, borrowed or have somehow come into my possession. Please use the Contact Me page on my website to get in touch, visit my Facebook page for latest updates and share this video if you like it! Thank you for watching.

Lovely looking example here. Makes a change from all the R8s and 75s that seem much more popular. Finding one like like this for a NBR price makes it a real gem.

Yes, I have owned eight Rovers, including a 620 automatic, and this is a lovely one, although I love 75/ZTs and R8s too. You can find them for under £500 if you want a tatty one like mine, but one like this is an amazing find for £900. Thanks ever so much indeed for watching!

A neighbour of my Granny's had the identical model in Metallic Red. I remember I used to walk around it and take in every angle and feature. It had real presence. Thought you would like it. Many cars of this era get forgotten, not to Rover 600. A forgotten one that you should try is the 1999 Citroën Xsara. Same floorpan and chassis as the Peugeot 306 and Berlingo. Difference is that the Peugeot is set for handling whereas the Xsara is set for comfort and it is sublime on a long distance, yet it is forgotten because of its plain styling. Passive rear steer makes it limpit like in corners.

Yes, the Rover 600s are still good looking cars today. I used to own one myself, of course. I know the Xsara, was definitely not a fan when they were new, they just seemed a bit crude with a plasticky interior and dull styling (facelift apart). They aren't expensive these days, would definitely try one. I have driven a 306 and found it disappointing, sadly.

The Rover 600 series always had a special place in my heart. Such a nice design for 1993 too. I wonder if it should have also been available with an entry level 1.6 litre engine for wider appeal as it replaced the Montego?
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much indeed, Matt! Yes, having owned one of these myself (it appears briefly in a drive by shot near the start of the review), they are lovely cars, although mine wasn't the best example. This is much, much better. The 1.6 D Series in a standard Rover R8 produced 110 bhp. The 618 with the F Series only produced around 115 bhp, so not a lot of difference, really...

Yes, an absolutely lovely interior for one of these, much better than the one I used to have.... Lots have been scrapped recently due to low secondhand values, rust and slightly tricky parts availability on earlier cars, but it's the sort of thing which we love on this channel!

I might of said this before, but the 620 was a good car, but it was pitched up with the BMW E36 as a compact executive, but it didnt even have the capabilities of a mondeo mk1! btw how many cars has mr coleman got now?, oh and you say "no fancy outfits" but i'm sorry, that suede blue jacket is quite fancy in my books!!
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 жыл бұрын
Mr Coleman has one less car now that a certain one has been scrapped (not this one). I will have to get a Mark I Mondeo Ghia on the channel so that we can compare the two. I am not a huge E36 fan, really, they are very cramped in the back and a bit austere for my taste, but they doubtless drive very nicely if you avoid the 316i!

Always loved these 600 Series Rovers. My dad had two as company cars back in the day, a 1995 620Si manual in Anthracite, and a 1998 620SLi auto in Nightfire Red. Both lovely cars, and both racked up huge miles without issues. We bought the red one when the company's user chooser scheme ended and kept it another 3 years. At 6 years old it had about 180k miles on it and all we'd ever done is service it and replace consumables. It was a little tired towards the end of our ownership, but it was still reliable and ran well. We replaced it with a 2003 Rover 75 Connoisseur 20 CDTI. That was a very lovely car, though we did have some electrical problems with it. Front suspension wore out at around 50k too. I remember the bill for springs and shocks, plus brake rebuild all round being quite expensive, even with my staff discount.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's funny how the Honda based Rovers had far, far fewer suspension problems with the double wishbone and multi-link rear set ups (of course the R8 was MacPherson struts on the front unlike a Concerto), whereas the 75's BMW type suspension seemed to wear out far more quickly. Doesn't stop me loving 75s and ZTs, though. Yes, my 620 was in far worse condition than this, but this is proof if you maintained them properly, then they could last very nicely indeed. 180,000 miles is very, very impressive. They suffered from colossal depreciation, though, didn't they?
@matthewgodwin3050

@@lloydvehicleconsulting Yeah, I think we paid about 5 grand for it when it was around 3 years old with circa 80 or 90k on the clock, but we didn't get a lot for it when we sold it on. Think we got high three figures in the trade for the 75. As good as they were, all Rovers, certainly the larger ones depreciated rather steeply to say the least. Having said that, a Vectra or Mondeo didn't hold their money that well either. I can remember being able to get 3 year old Mondeos with low miles for around 4 or 5 grand. Them were the days.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 жыл бұрын
Wow, that's an absolute bargain! I expect that the 75 would be worth more now than when you traded it in, as prices are on the rise.... Still complete three year old bargains at the time, though, and much classier than a Mondeo or a Vectra. The Mondeos were also excellent cars, though!
@matthewgodwin3050
@matthewgodwin3050 3 жыл бұрын
@@lloydvehicleconsulting Sorry, I meant the Rover 620 auto was 5 grand when we bought it, and a few hundred when sold. Mind you, the 75 didn't hold its money either. We kept that until 2009, when my father traded it for an Audi A4. Think he got about 3 grand for it with just under 100k on the clock. The 75 cost us about £17000 as an ex demo. We got good use out of it, but it became almost worthless as the years and miles rolled by. Never liked the Audi. It was beautifully made, but it had the most appallingly harsh ride. I hated riding in it. Reliability wasn't great either. Nothing mega serious, but German cars aren't as bullet proof as some people believe.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 жыл бұрын
@@matthewgodwin3050 , yes, I understood about the price of the 620. Still an amazing bargain! The 75s started to go down in price very rapidly with the demise of Rover, and secondhand prices have only started to pick up recently. Audis actually don't seem to be that reliable, Seats and Skodas are a lot better, bizarrely! You are right about the ride in comparison with a 75, even a ZT has a pretty compliant ride when you get out of a modern car into it.

My late Dad had an R reg Rover 620 for 10 years until he passed away in 2013. I then kept the Rover for a few years but I had to let it go in the end. It was a good car which had the 2 litre Honda engine, a pleasure to drive. I was sad to let it go in the end but these things happen.

Yes, I do like them very much, apart from the poor rear visibility and the overlight power steering at speed in most models. A lot of them seem to have been owned by older gentlemen, don't they? Both the one Mr Coleman had and mine certainly had been...
@Mr_Chris__
@Mr_Chris__ 3 жыл бұрын
@@lloydvehicleconsulting Yes I did notice a lot of Rovers were owned by older gentlemen. My Dad bought his just after he retired. He used to get a company car every couple of years when he was working. It's a shame the Rover company did not survive. A sign of the times.

Yes, a lot of them were originally company cars, I think. The discounts available on them new were huge! Still very much underrepresented on the classic car scene, though. I have a 2003 45 V6, so Rover definitely gets a lot of appreciation in our household, even if they disappeared years ago.
@Mr_Chris__

@@lloydvehicleconsulting I remember my Dad saying he believed that his Rover was once a company car. I remember him saying that their were two Rover 620s at the auction. He bidded on the one that was in better condition. Apparently the other one had scratches on it and was in need of a few repairs.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 жыл бұрын
@@Mr_Chris__, yes, they were very popular as company cars, but used to lose a colossal amount of money in depreciation. Thus, picking one up after end of the finance agreement with the company used to be a very popular past time for bargain hunters!

John 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
