It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive KZbin experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong...
Planet Auto channel: / @planetautouk
This time, as we test a really rather nice 2007 Honda Jazz Sport, and, for once, I find little to complain about. Hold onto your seats as we go for a leisurely drive in the Lake District, give incorrect information about sat navs, get to grips with a really simple engine and trim structure, get distracted by Mr Ben Quirk from Planet Auto, wonder about Twin Spark configurations and generally do little of any consequence at all. Nothing untoward, then...
As an independent vehicle consultant, I take potential buyers through the whole car buying process from choosing a make and model to a vehicle handover and road tax. In addition to information on this service, I also have a selection of written and video reviews of cars that I have owned, hired, borrowed or have somehow come into my possession. Please use the Contact Me page on my website to get in touch, visit my Facebook page for latest updates and share this video if you like it! Thank you for watching.

A lovely example of a great car! The Jazz has always been a model of great packaging and clever design, and has always managed to avoid the rather awkward styling of other super-mini models designed to major on interior space such as the Renault Modus, Skoda Roomster and truly hideous Toyota Yaris Verso. That car niche seems to have pretty much died out with the Jazz being about the last one, but unless you need to carry a house around the Jazz is a viable small family car and a great buy.

Yes, the Jazz was always the best of the Mini MPVs and with the demise of the Hyundai ix20, Ford B-Max and Kia Venga last year, it does now have that market to itself, although I always saw it as a Ford Fiesta/Volkswagen Polo rival too. It just keeps on selling well to a very loyal crowd and the new model has been very popular on the Planet Auto KZbin channel. It's hard to fault at £1000 if you can find a good one.

Thank you for the review once again, what a lovely example of the Mk 1 Jazz. I have just swapped my Mk111 Fabia for a 2018 top of the range Jazz EX Navi CVT and yes I am old and fancied going back to an Automatic 😊😁 The Jazz is a surprisingly good car, I say surprising because of all the tech and features. The CVT is not to everyone's taste but personally I find it so relaxing and it is of course one of the most reliable Auto boxes on the market.

@David_H-73 3 жыл бұрын
They are suprisingly good aren't they. I got my mk1 as a stopgap but am now keeping longer than I thought. The CVT is very relaxing as long as you don't have a heavy right foot! Enjoy your EX navi . Make sure you change the gearbox oil every 2 years regardless of mileage. Only use Honda CVT fluid ,this will prelong gearbox life and stave off the infamous CVT judder .

I found the gearbox in David's car very smooth indeed, it's clearly had various gearbox fluid changes. These really are very, very good cars if you can get past the slightly older image, probably one of best I have featured on the series as they just make so much sense. Not as exciting as the MG TF perhaps, but certainly dependable if you find a good example that has been properly serviced like this one.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting Yes they are a bit old style, the gearbox is upgraded and the 1.3 i-Vtec engine was new in 2015 I believe. Having not driven a previous Jazz I can't compare but my 2018 model is sweet without being fancy. Performance is more than adequate for me and I soon found a gentle right foot is the way to drive it. At my age I'm finding practicality and easy driving come before style and performance, however it's still possible to get a lot of enjoyment in the process.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, they changed the engine range for the previous model and again for the new one, which only comes as a hybrid over here now. The retained value for the Jazz is very good too... This older one was better to drive than I was expecting, the steering certainly was a lot better than many modern cars I could mention. They are popular with older people, but there is an excellent reason for that: they are just very good general transport.

@martinowl
@martinowl 2 жыл бұрын
I had a 1.4 civic, which suffered the gearbox bearing failure. Apparently it was a very common fault with that engine that came about when Honda changed bearing suppliers. I was also told that Honda refused to accept there was an issue & would only rectify vehicles that were fully Honda serviced with low miles.

Mine is the base 2004 one with the external boot lock visible. Nice car with a cam - chain engine as you will know. Only dramatic hiccup was the door & tailgate lock barrels wearing out, and the air - bag and electric window recall last year. Many thanks Joseph (Joe?) for this video. I'm looking at a first-gen Jazz. I can't believe how tidy this particular example looks. 👍 From 2007, all SE and Sport models came with electric folding mirrors, but I can't believe Honda added mirror-integrated indicators to the Jazz in 2004, well before Ford decided to do it with the 2004-2011 Focus. That surprised me actually. For reference, the boot space in the Jazz is 353 L, which makes it 11% smaller than that of a Focus (same age), and 24% larger than the equivalent Fiesta, despite the dimensions of the Jazz equalling the Fiesta. With the Magic Seats folded down, the boot space becomes 1,323 L, which is 6% more than the Focus.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting No problem mate. The one I'm looking at is a 57 plate 1.4 SE (manual) model with 95k on the clock in black. Advertised for £850, and I've paid for a full HPI check. We're just trying to organise a date and time now as this New Years has created even more bank holidays than usual! 😂 I believe the second-gen model was released in 2008 as you say, but a lot of those still sell for a few grand at least. Ideally it would make a nicer car I think, but I can't afford that right now so I'm thinking that perhaps a late first-gen might be the best compromise. It should be recall-free unlike the earliest models, and includes a refined interior with better ride quality and materials, plus up-to-date (for the time at least!) features like those electric-folding mirrors, side airbags, and more options as standard. I've just watched your video on the Mk6 Fiesta, and I noticed that you mentioned the Jazz there too. My mum has an 03 plate 1.4 Zetec (with the Zetec S engine), and I really do like how it drives. @@roseroseroserose6958 , I did a job in West London fairly recently, actually, although I am based in Hampshire. The thing is that any car can break down at any time (even new ones), and with the older ones they can be one bill away from being uneconomical to repair, even ones which are generally reliable like a Honda Jazz, so reliability can never be 100% guaranteed on anything, despite the fact that people say that the first priority they have is reliability. That goes without saying, who wants to keep breaking down! This is why any car needs to be carefully checked. I wouldn't buy a Nissan Juke, they aren't bad to drive, but there are a lot of better choices out there. I reviewed one on the channel in 2019, and wasn't very impressed.

The nicest Jazz 2002-2007 is the one in Vivid Pearl Blue or Yellow, both colors also very popular with people seeking to customize their cars. :D Steering is electic. Hydraulic steering is heavier. The electric steering helps enough that at low speeds its as if the resistance isn't there. Don't worry about it having no frills, ghetto satnav setups are easy to add and you do get an aux jack in the vehicle (which is rare for cars of that era!) This isn't really the most comfortable of vehicles. I mean, it's nice that the vehicle encourages you to sit bolt upright and has the proper support for that position, but you do hear and feel the road. If you find the racket not good for you or your passenger, then consider a Toyota Corolla (Altis) from the same era, should be around the same price; not as manuverable or fun to drive tho. It's common to find models with broken power folding mirrors and the "iDSI" labelling on the engine cover gone; don't let these dissuade you if the power mirror adjusting works, the vehicle doesn't leak and the rest of the car works fine. People prefer the manual version and I understand (VTEC), but the iDSI auto version isn't half bad. You take >12 seconds to get to 60mph but it can stay there once it gets there, and you get off stop surprisingly fast for an automatic with only 82HP..

Often on No Budget Reviews I get offered an example of car which is far nicer than average and is worth a bit more than £1000. This is the case here, and was for numerous other episodes such as the Maestro Vanden Plas, MG TF, Suzuki Grand Vitara and others. Sometimes the car is in a bit of state, and definitely worth less than £500, such as the Volvo 240, Rover 214 and Ford Scorpio. The main point is that you can buy an example of one of these cars with an MOT in reasonable condition for under £1000, which is definitely the case with a Jazz, particularly a manual. I can only review what I get offered on the whole, so I can't always be too picky about whether or not the car in front of me would exceed the budget or not. I hope that makes sense.
