When I first saw the MK4 Golf at Earls Court it looked very striking with its very cool headlamps. My Good Friend Kieron owned a 1999 Volkswagen Golf GTI 1.8T in that beautiful Royal Blue colour. I travelled in it many times and found it very comfortable indeed. Even with driver and four passengers it had plenty of power along with excellent gear ratios. This is without doubt the best looking Golf.

Sir, I remember that from when they came out too. They do actually look quite good in higher specifications like this. The 1.8 Turbo engined cars, with either power output, are quite fast. Thank you again for watching again!

An excellent Review Sir, hard to choose between a Mark 1 Focus and a Golf Mark 4. At launch in 1998 I would have had a focus but the Golf has really aged quite well and the GTi anniversary looks good especially on these alloys.

Thank you, Mr Watters! Glad you enjoyed it. The Focus has a delicacy to the way it drives which a Golf cannot match, but nevertheless, they both certainly have their merits.

A very interesting review sir. I used to run a couple of Boras (the booted mk 4 Golf) and now I have a mk 3.5 Focus. I think your comments about the interior quality are most interesting: if you directly compare the mk 4 Golf to the contemporary mk 1 Focus, it’s obvious for the Golf the development budget went mostly on the interior whereas for the Focus it was spent on the chassis. There were “little touches” such as netting and (chrome) luggage eyes in the boot of the Bora that I really missed when I first got the Focus. I will also note that, from my brief interactions with mk 4 Golf forums, the V5 and V6 (the latter I believe only available in the R32 and 4WD “4 Motion” spec) aren’t really worth it. Yes they are smooth, particularly the V6, but the V5 for one isn’t that much faster and they are thirsty.

The V6 was actually available in other specifications and power outputs than the R32, but I have certainly never seen one. I have seen a couple of V5s, but they are quite rare. The Bora is most definitely on my list, as such things were available with a beige leather interior and wood, although I have yet to be offered one.

Very nice indeed. I think a 2.3 V5 would suit me. The Germans flaunting sense of humour with that golf ball shaped gear knob!

Sir, the V5 would be an inspired choice. Indeed, some very amused German executives would have fun in that.

This was sorta my era….the mk4 was always seen as comfy rather than sporty and higher performance cars were said to be not sharp enough. But built very well. The mk5 was said to be more sharp, more fun, but the quality wasn’t quite so good.

Driven a couple of Mark Vs, and the chassis was better, but I prefer these.

Amazing spec car. Love the wheels. Did they offer a 5 door anniversary edition

It was quite good, and it was also surprisingly fast! Not sure if they offered it as a five door, come to think of it...

Oh Sir, I was surprised by the lack of room in the back. But still about twice as much room as that Lexus. This car is TWENTY-TWO years old. Terrifying, Mr. Lloyd...

Sir, we are also slightly terrified that 2002 was 22 years ago. Never mind, at least we provided some material for Mr Manning in the back seats!

I half expected you to have a baseball cap and some sporting apparel on good sir? True that good condition examples are for the true officiandos and are cosseted but most are haggered modified versions that would appear on an episode of Traffic Cops with no insurance, tax or license and with questionable substances in them
