A lot of parents turn to the Internet these days to pick up Sanskrit names for their children. As it turns out, a lot of name websites deceive parents by inventing non-existent Sanskrit names or giving dubious meanings. This talk with real-life examples is an eye-opener for parents wishing to give a Sanskrit name to their children
About the speaker: -
Nityananda Misra is an IIM Bangalore graduate and a finance professional. He is a scholar of Sanskrit and Hindi and a well-known author. He has edited/authored eleven books, including ‘The OM Mala’ and ‘Kumbha: The Traditionally Modern Mela’. He writes on Hindu religion, philosophy, and culture.

Richard Roe when a child is born in a family, his name is called out over and over again. A word is basically a sound. That sound is vibration and vibrations are forms of energy. That energy reverberates within the walls of your house. That energy can alter the mood of the people residing within those walls. That energy plays an important part in how we behave and act. That’s why naming a child is so important in our culture. If the residents of a house keep yelling “stupid” throughout the day, it will hamper their minds in a certain way. If we name the child “Shiva” and that name is spoken over and over again, it has a different effect on the minds of the residents. I don’t know which country you’re from, but in India, when a man dies a natural death, his family is with him, and the last words before he dies are usually the names of his children Would you like your last words to be “stupid” or “retard”?

Thank you for enlightening me. I used to think kiran is feminine and the North Indians use it correctly for girls n South Indians are wrong by naming boys kiran. But it's masculine after all in sanskrit M a north indian residing in Chennai n I hv come to realise that most south Indians keep genuine sanskrit names . People are named mostly after deities n thy don't go for fancy names or follow trends blindly . Bhuvaneshwari is a very common name in Tamil nadu..

Accuracy of names - wonder if incorrect naming might skew the child's growth. You never know how kids learn and absorb pragmatically in that age. What happens if it all falls down to getting his/her name right (and correctly understood) that triggers a chain reaction of where the child ends up. I mean, in the old days, Devratt was called Bhism after his vow, Dashanand got called Ravan due to his voice... Meghnaad too, due to the moment when he was born. Yuddhistr because his kingly father wanted him to remain balanced in battle situations (intentions) - names are certainly more important than we realise!

For most modern hindusnow, it is about exotic sounding rare name which will go well internationally too. Language and meaning is irrelevant. Any case , when one is not rooted in culture, his or her ability to comprehend the rich beauty of sanskrit words is zilch. Incidentally , on Tamil Nadu there is a trend to use either Tamil translation of sanskrit word, or pure tamil words to establish Tamil supremacy. On a different note, I won't be surprised if a post millennial generation soon asserts that choice of name must be with the nameholder and not the parents, and exercise the choice as soon as they start using mobile phone say at the age of 3 or 4, given their intelligence and techsaviness 😀

Yudhisthira means the one who is sthir = unperturbed in situation of Yudha=war (it could be real war with weapons or it could be psychological war).. Bhim means big in size .. Arjun means whose eyes are firm on the target... Sahadev means the person who has good capacity to bear the pain could be physical or psychological ... Nakul means handsome... correct me if I am wrong

Yeah, you are correct. It was the psychological war.

Very well put! It’s the lure of exotic sounding names that takes people to these websites… And the problem lies in Muslim names too! So many out of context names, or names that become antonyms when conjugated with fathers’ or surname!

I am glad that I being a 14year old ICSE student- I found proper logical Indian History channels like #ProjectShivoham #RajivMalhotra #TheFestivalofBharat #AbhijitChadva #SangamTalks #CittiMedia #IHAR first, - & as a result I saved myself from getting brainwashed by our school History books & many illogical & misinformed people on the internet & came to know about the true Indian History. Thanks a lot to all the KZbin channels which helped me in gaining knowledge.

Great presentation Nityananda Misra ji. Regarding the name Aveer, there is a similar sounding name Abir (আবিৰ) which is popular among Assamese and Bengali communities. The meaning is pleasant smell, fragrance etc. Searches on Google indicate it has Arabic origin. There is one more word Abeer (আবীৰ) meaning red coloured powder / Gulal used in Holi.

@ 27.12min I see name "Airi". To mean found in the water or born in the earth. Could this not mean souls or sinners born beneath the earth's 7 layers and thus spirits of darkness that live deep in the sea, thus says found in the water? Therefore name has more negative than positive meaning?

Hello sir, thank you for your amazing insights. We have named our daughter Dhriti. I would like to know your thoughts about this name. Also, you mention in the video that it would be better to have 3 syllable name for a girl child. But in the video you don't elaborate as to why this is so. In any case, could you let us know how we can contact you about re-naming our daughter? Although we love the name Dhriti, we would like to consider your inputs and guidance. Many thanks for your amazing work.

Excellent talk from Nityanand . Very scholarly and practical as well. Names are very powerful and is very important for Hindus who use it mould the personality and spirituality according to one's profession as well as family. Traditionally they were also varna specific. few generations of us have been totally misled and wrong names have led to our "patan" in spirituality. Better to stick to the simple tradition of naming after grandparents or great grandparents
