My '21 GL1800BD wobbled only at 45mph, but only if my hands were off the bars. It happened with the original tire (Dunlop) . Then it stopped with the replacement tire(Bridge stone). It recurred with the 3rd tire (Dunlop). I installed the counterweight you provided and Voila! The bike behaves normally. It is such a relief to ride now. Thanks!

I've got the same bike and same wobble scenario at 45mph . I've currently got 9000 miles on the bike. Out of curiousity, how many miles did you have on the tires when you changed them?

Around 40,000 miles my 2019 developed a wobble 30-40 mph, especially upon deceleration. Found that steering head "tuning fork" bearings had loosened. No idea why. They were tightened up and bike rode like new again.

I've owned a 2013 Goldwing and a 2016, both had a slight wobble while decelerating from 40 to 30 mph. It wasn't pronounced and it didn't affect handling.

You have to include the language "when I took my hands off the controls". I am certain it didn't wobble with your hands on the bars.
@pakviroti3616 Жыл бұрын
@@Traxxion Well, then you would be wrong. The wobble would occur during deceleration starting at ~40mph until you reached ~30mph. It wasn't pronounced but it was certainly noticeable. Both my 2013 and 2016 Wings did it. My 2014 Gold Wing Valkyrie did not have a wobble, but it had different tires. My 1998 GL1500 Valkyrie did not have the wobble. I have over 50 years of riding experience, I wouldn't state something that wasn't factual. You might want to retract your assertion.

Useful information, as always. Thanks. I have yet to experience a wobble of any kind on my ‘21 GWT in 24,000 miles. You mentioned something about a wobble in some older Wings. I had an ‘86 Aspencade, years ago. It had a wobble at about 30 mph that was only perceptible if I loosened my grip. I just lived with it, since it wasn’t a major issue. I knew about it and it was easily controlled, so I never even mentioned it to a mechanic. Everything seemed tight and therefore, I assumed it was just inherent to the GoldWings of the day. But why was that? Was there an issue with my particular bike, or WAS it just inherent to the brand?

That's a dissertation... but steering bearings and sacked out suspension are the main causes.

Remove the centramatic wheel balancers, they are not necessary as you now know. Regular wheel weights are fine. Then replace the front tire, it is defective.

Tried Metzler's last time. Bike wobbles slightly above 65mph. I'll back to Bridgestones next go. That is if I don't get rid of this pos after the recall is done
@CraigKressner Жыл бұрын
I have a 2019 with about 40k on it. No issues until I had another set of Bridgestones installed. Shook bad at 45 ish. Smooth out until about 60. Then bad again. I took it back, dealer put another front tire on it. Shook less, but still bad. Went back. This time they tighten the bearings and put Dunlops on it. It shook less. As I have put miles on the tires the shake is getting worse. At 60+, it feels like there is a thump in the front tire. So after three sets of tires and tightening the bears, I got to think something else is happening. Dealer does not know. Any ides?
@Traxxion Жыл бұрын
Have to go back to: It didn't shake before the dealer worked on it. Are you saying your bike shakes while you are holding the handlebars? Or is this something where you are riding with your hands off the bike?
@CraigKressner Жыл бұрын
@@Traxxion it shakes while holding the handle bars. You can see it shake more is you loosen your grip. It also has a noticeable thump you can feel when you get to about 60. I had wobble in my 86' Yamaha Venture Royal. I'm not saying it can do anything for GW, or your situation here. But every bit of knowledge adds up to wisdom! Bike wobbled, sometimes violently, right at 45 mph. Almost every time going Through 45mph was mental game. No one could solve. So I called Yamaha in Japan, told them my wobble problem? Yamaha solution was to place bike on center stand. Loosen engine mounting bolts. (Loosen, but don't remove mounting bolts!) While in running position, start an warm up bike. Then shift too first an continue shifting through all gears. Then shift back down through gears, for total 5 times. Stop motor. Re-tighten engine mounting bolts too spec's. This revving engine up an down through gears several times, lined up engine an drive system. It worked, I never had another wobble!

Max the timing of this video is perfect for me, as I was just on a 5 state trip and this happened to me, a couple of times I had my hands off the grips and all of a sudden the wobble, but as soon as I grabbed them it stopped, so if the tie rods have nothing to do with this problem how is it that it stops it from wobbling as soon as I grab the handlebars again, I have not noticed any looseness in the front end, by the way I have a 2021 Godwing, as far as I can figure a bump on the road will set it off wobbling and I had not had this happen with other bikes I've owned, it's disconcerting to say the least.

These wobbles are a self-reinforcing effect. When you have your hands on the steering you are changing the damping of the system and get the resonance out of the system.
@Traxxion Жыл бұрын
@@bernhards.8529 A bike with properly set up and functioning suspension won't do any of the common wobble behaviors. You can set the cruise control on a bike with Traxxion Suspension on it and drive from coast to coast with your hands off the bars and you'll never have a wobble.
@bernhards.8529 Жыл бұрын
@@Traxxion I'm fully with you: Normally no wobbles should occur at any speeds or conditions. But the question here was, why the wobble starts/stops, when having the hands off/on the steering.
@Traxxion Жыл бұрын
@@bernhards.8529 The why is a myriad of possibilities, which would take a dissertation to attempt to explain. But in my 40+ years of professional experience with motorcycles, 90% of wobbles are caused by undersrung forks with inadequate damping. Fix the forks and the bike will not wobble any more, even under decel with no hands on the bars.
