Hi, where could be a problem, if starter rotates, but pinion doesn't push out? Starter is new. I changed it, because of this problem. It hapenned on my last ride before winter time. When I was running on highway, engine stall suddenly. So I glided to the highway exit and put cas aside and tried to start engine, but it didn't. Only starter was moving. We towed to my garage and there I noticed, that starter didn't move with crankshaft. I tried to change starter relay, but it didn't help.

How accurate is the resistance test? I mean if coils are shorted together inside,it still may come back with a low reading.
@PistonShack
@PistonShack Жыл бұрын
Resistance test is not the best to check starter circuit integrity. I would recommend to check voltage drop when starter still on a vehicle. Coils could be shorted but resistance might be okay, at least you can check coil continuity for open.
@hey_youtubeim_back2159
@hey_youtubeim_back2159 Жыл бұрын
One more test to tell if a starter is good or bad. That is a resistance test while under load. You can take an ohms reading or resistance test on a starter with no load through it and it could check out just fine but if you put a load to it and then test for resistance he could tell a different story altogether.

If my motor always spins but is slow, especially when engine is hot, will this show up with the windings test. Not sure what the ohms reading should be?
@PistonShack

Hey Tom. It could be three main reasons why starter spins slowly: 1) brushesh wearing out; 1) poor connection at the main starter cable; 3) increased internal resistance of the starter.

those terminals on the solenoid are not marked and the solenoid can be installed (on my car) in 4 different settings, like 1/4 rotation each. Are the terminals of the solenoid negative and positive? or will it matter since the solenoid is only a switch? (either on or off)?

@@PistonShack I realized that that everything was working fine and since it was a 24V battery, one of it(the battery) had a charge voltage of 10.50V and the other had 12.45v and as I was jump starting I did the mistake of joining both batteries in series instead of just jumping starting the one with the 10.50V. This is when its already mount to the gearbox casing (on load test) Anyways your content was really helpful

Quick question. Car wouldn’t start on Sunday, after having driven it 5 min prior to the current problem. Turned key, nothing. Checked battery, it is still good. So, replaced starter. Still nothing. Replaced ignition actuator pin as I found it was broken. Still, nothing. Towed car to our house and it sat overnight. Came home from work last night, and went to work on it but decided to try and start, and it started right away with zero issue. Turned off several more times to test it and started each time without issue. This morning, went into the garage and it is not starting again. No clue what is going on!! Any ideas? Ty so much in advance. It is a 2001 Wrangler Sport, BTW.

Could anyone help a brother out... I changed a starter motor and it spins real real slow.. It pops out and spins/ runs fine out the car on bench test.. So I bypassed the cables using jump leads straight to starter... And when it's fitted back in car it only makes the click where the spindle pops out but it doesn't spin when in the car. The positive lead heats up when this happens at the positive starter connection bolt. 2 months and still no further forward. 😭 Not sure why it works fine out the car on bench, but using exact same jump lead connections when fitted in car it just doesn't spin the crank. Driving me insane.

Hey Craig! Well, I would do 1) voltage drop test at the starter when circuit as loaded (cranking position) then compare voltage at the battery while cranking with voltage at the starter main stud and eyelet; 2) check ground voltage at the started, should be not more then 100-300 mV; 3) check battery posts connections on both ends and cables integrity; 4)connect battery charger, set to engine start mode to verify the issue; 5) replace starter relay. Let me know how everything is going.

@@PistonShackhi I got there in the end a couple days ago... Turned out the AC compressor pump was stuck fast and not rotating, so the belt wasnt spinning making the engine not turn over. Seen quite a few people that have had similar if any belt accessory seizes up... Like alternator, water pump, and other pulleys. It never even crossed my mind, but soon as I took the belt off it fired up straight away no problem. Will either replace the AC clutch, or just the whole unit. Unless you may have any other quick tips for the AC unit to get it spinning again. Cheers buddy!!
