I do this method but I buy 4’x100’ rolls of paper from Gemplers. By rolling it out quickly, it saves time and doesn’t move as much as newspaper. It’s organic paper as well, made for vegetable gardens to keep weeds down. I also don’t have newspaper at my disposal. Your garden is beautiful!

Great job! I've been doing this for years. I had someone come over to give me a price on extending my garden bed and he gave me a price of over 300 or 400 dollars...!! WHAT!!! I extended it myself for pennies using newspaper and cardboard boxes. It looks great.

Yesterday I met and talked with the farmer who leases some of our land and he said he’s been no till for decades! It was very interesting to hear the agricultural perspective. I started using your white rope method a couple beds ago and it’s the absolute best! It’s so much easier to see and manipulate than a hose.

One thing I took from Charles Dowding, if one has tough weeds, then put down another layer of cardboard and compost. By smothering the unwanted plants, they lose their vigor and eventually (usually) give up trying to grow. For my garden with invasive ferns, oriental bittersweet & poison ivy I found this to be true. The first growing season the ferns and bittersweet kept popping up here and there. This growing season they' sporadic and super easy to pull. I expect the next season the regrowth will be minimal to non existent. Love this method.

I actually just use mulch on top of my newspaper or cardboard and it's worked great every time. I had one person on yt that was trying no dig out for the first time and admittedly didn't know much about it tell me that I could not just put mulch on top and was quiet rude. lol You indeed can just use mulch to smother the grass and weeds out... I'm sure compost adds extra nutrients to the bed but not an absolute! lol Anyway, I learned about the no dig beds from you! Thank you

Great demonstration of the no-dig method!! I’m using this right in front of our house! When we moved in a year ago the bed had been taken over by noxious weeds. I still have to hand pull a few of the toughest weeds every 3 weeks or so, but so much less than the sad sight the bed was!! Once the native plantings get bigger and crowd out the weeds fully it will be wonderful! I love this method!! Your bed is gorgeous btw. 😍😍

Excellent video, beautiful gardens! I'm so curious about your sleeves & wonder if they are attached to a shirt, or if they are simply sleeves to protect your arms. This method worked on an area I had with poison ivy, oriental bittersweet both of which are tough. they did poke through the first year but they were easy to pull out. This second year, the poison ivy hasn't shown up and the bittersweet just here and there. I was at my wits end when I took on that area of the garden, but this worked really well. Plus, not a youngster any more I don't have energy to garden 8 hours. LOL

Great video! I recently attempted a no dig garden bed and was lost on a few things. I have a silly question.. I had to buy compost for it and found it challenging to find. I managed to find compost with worm castings and composted manure. I ended up using a bag of each.. but I’m still wondering .. is compost manure the same as compost ? I would like to make another one but which compost should I be using? Secondly! Can you plant annual bedding flowers right away and do you just plant them in the compost/mulch layers? Thanks !
@greatgardensforall2 жыл бұрын
I just made a video with a follow up on how to plant 😊 as for the compost make sure manure is decomposed. There are different types of compost - but it’s basically decomposed organic matter which feeds your soil and plants
@mmcclam2 жыл бұрын
What kind of native soil do you have? I grew up in West Milford and then lived in Wayne in my 20s, but didn’t start gardening until I moved to Europe. I miss how naturally lush and green North Jersey always seemed! Beautiful flower bed! Love the balance between having a nice mix of plants but big enough drifts that you can enjoy them all!

Native soil is poor and rocky. I need to add tons of organic matter or my plants start to look tired 😂

What kind of grass do you have that is so easy to cover? Here in N Texas we have Bermuda grass and St Augustine, which would eat that newspaper for lunch. We have to use several overlapping layers of cardboard and think layers of mulch and compost, plus endure a wait of a season or two before planting. Even still, grass and weeds poke through here and there and can do so for years. Btw, I had to watch twice because the first time I couldn't take my eyes off that dogwood. Just glorious. ~ Lisa

I should have done your method, with newspaper. I currently have lots of cardboard weighed down with boards, flower pots and even a lawn chair. The cardboard isn't doing its job. Flaps lift up with the wind so grass is popping up. It's my intention to kill creeping Charlie that migrated from a neighbor's yard. Creeping bellflower is my nemesis. Do not be lured by its lovely blue flowers.
