Incredible. Watching this channel never fails to show me just how much I still DON'T know about machining. Being a hobbyist, this channel is the closest thing I'll probably ever come to the education that would be received through something like an apprenticeship, and I can't even express how valuable it is to have access to that kind of knowledge. Thanks as always for sharing your knowledge and experience with us, I truly appreciate it.

Well my southern friend. 2023 was a good one and I am wanting for 2024 to be an even better time for us all. These number crunching setups are absolutely imperative for accurate parts. Scratch pads, the back of one's hand or the top of a vice are as important as the air we breath. I am loving this modification to the build. It adds some more bling to the overall look. You have given us all a plethora of lessons over this past year. Do's and don'ts with every post. Thanks a bunch old friend. So onward to 24 and lets have a great time with it all eh.

“Sometimes it’s not smart to be too precise about something that just doesn’t matter”. I never thought I’d hear you say that Joe. On the other hand, that’s one of things that sets you apart from other makers.

You’d have made a very good Pattern maker. The old guy I used to work with said that a good pattern maker makes a lousy furniture maker. If they made a drawer it would be such a close fit that once you closed it you’d never get it to open again.

A customer of mine brought me his “gopher gun” which is a single shot 410 that stopped extracting and ejecting. It has a tensioner that pushes against the shell rim opposite the extractor. The spring on the tensioner was collapsed and cracked it was built in the late 20s so I had to wind a spring to fix that. Unfortunately it helped but 50% extraction is not adequate in the war against garden varmints. The extractor was .085 thick and had a notch to hold the spring, a pivot hole and a multi surface tip to grab the case rim. The tip is angled to interfaces a slot in the OD of the chamber that forces the extractor over the shell rim. I’d made less complex parts in my rotary fixture before but the length and thickness of this required me to channel my inner Joe P to get it cut, from 4140 round so it would last, there is a grandson who hopes to have this one day. I used an indicator to center up mainly so I could work from either side and end up with a radius that matched the bolt when through. I roughed the shape, located and drilled the hole then completed the spring notch. I set the fixture to cut the tip to match the angle in the barrel. Went flat again and re located off the notch and cut to finish size. A dozen steps omitted to prevent readers from falling asleep. You will always be my set up hero, I guess some is sinking in. I hope you and yours have a healthy and happy 2024.

Joe says it often to THINK about it, write it down, Think some more before we paint ourselves into a corner. Set up, set up, a successful piece starts there. As machinists we have built/made the world we live in. Not one single piece of anything has not had us involved in. Pretty neat in my books eh.

This is very nice work and it makes the project more realistic having a working door. For small radius' Joe I would set the excessive length of my part (similiar to this one) in a 5C square collet on my lathe and a lathe tool put in a fixture and the part tightened in a 5C square collet. Now the part would be turned by hand between two stops so as to create a radius with the center of the holes as the locator for the outside radius'. Stops in the form of pins keeps the hinges from going past the proper radius length while I swing the parts from point to point cutting small amounts of metal off.
@joepie221 Жыл бұрын
Provided the center of the round was on center with the collet, that sounds possible.

Yes Definitely please make a Detailed video of indicating and do you have a fast easy way for Spindle speeds for end mills and lathes
@anneinfurna8528 Жыл бұрын
What I was taught about speeds and feeds is: Cut chips and increase speed until you see blue chips, than back off a little. Straw color chips are sufficient, especially for High Speed tools. Carbides can go much faster, but i still like to stay in the range of straw to barely blue with that. Rule of thumb is this: Harder materials you need to slow down thru, and take lighter cuts. Softer material cuts slightly better with a slightly Duller tool, Like Brass, so it does not Get grabby. Especially when you drill it. These have worked great for me. Good Luck! carry on.

Thanks so much Anne.... tips like your's compliment Joe's videos so well. Please continue to input. We learn so much from Joe and comments like yours are just the "cream on the top"
@jamesboggs5212 Жыл бұрын
Pretty sure this advice isn't applicable to machining pot metal. Or any non-ferrous for that matter. You'd have to be hogging off some serious cuts with a massive feed rate to put that kind of heat into the chips. Much like cast iron, this kind of material almost "powders" off more than coming off in curls. Granted we are talking milling here and not lathe work. Single point tooling is going to cut differently on a lathe. Machinerys Handbook has speed and feed tables. FWIW. Happy Holidays Joe and everyone else here.
@iancole6565 Жыл бұрын
Hi James b, Yes your right. I took for granted that part of Annes comment refererred to ferris material as she talked about non ferris seperately. Ihave a dozen different publications and google printouts with speed/feed charts but i thanked Anne on behalf of all those newbie hobby machinests who are looking for the experinced pro's hints, tips and that "feel" for machining.joe does this so well and Annes comments also. Ive been using a lathe since since 1963 and will experiment with the dull end mill theory on some brass and bronze next week. So all you pro's out there lots of tips and hints the newbies can learn from. Thanks.
@anneinfurna8528 Жыл бұрын
@@iancole6565 In this small forum, it is hard to explain Everything commenting on tips and techniques. If i respond to beginners, i explain a Bit more, to be clear. My comment was about Cutting iron , Steel and other Ferrous material with the color of the chips, Some have had trouble cutting the softer materials like Brass, Pot metal, and any of the monel materials, but a slightly Duller tool cuts them Great. If you have ever had problems drilling Brass -- The problem is that you are cutting with a Too sharp drill. Take a stone and take the edge a bit off, and try that -- Like making a drill into kind of a spade tool, and not so aggressive. Brass will literally 'Suck' a sharp drill into it, and generally it Breaks it. Dulling it makes it be controllable. Here is a good one On a parting tool, grind a radius into the front flat of it, It will part off parts with No Burr -- important if you are cutting off Hundreds of parts.Saves a second operation. Carry on.
