I was walking home from work one evening and turned the corner and ran into this. All the while celebrities were pulling up and getting out of their cars onto the red carpet. I left NYC in 97 after 3 years but what a time. The center of the universe.

I was just a kid but I was there in the audience on 5th avenue. It was right after Summer camp for me. Was a big deal for me, cause I had never been that far away from home before (I'm from New Zealand). Huge night - Oasis spat on the stage, I saw all the way up Shirley Manson's skirt when Garbage sang 'I'm only happy when it rains' Tupac and Snoop went on stage together to give an award dressed in suits and looking like pimps (Tupac was shot dead two days later)

Damn I actually remember watching this (have it recorded on VHS tape I think), time flies. Actually, now that I hear it again, she doesn’t sound that great. Not hitting the high notes too well & she hit the wrong note a couple times, noticeably.
